It seems strange that a prisoner man could tell a church to rejoice. But Paul's actitud teaches us an important lesson: the inner actitud doesn't need to reflect our external circumstances. Paul was full of joy because he knew that despite what happened to him, Christ was with him. Paul urges the Philippians to rejoice several times in his letter, probably because they needed to hear it. It's very easy to get discouraged in the face of circumstances that are not pleasant or take unimportant facts as if they were. If we have not enjoyed joy lately, perhaps because we are not looking at life from the right perspective. The supreme joy comes when Christ dwells in us. Christ is near and at His Second Coming we will enjoy it in all its fullness. He who dwells in us will fulfill his maximum purpose.
