My passion was Artificial Intelligence since I was a teenager in mid-late 2000s. At that time it was not so popular and common in industry and people said that it has no scope here, but I followed it. I was lucky that in 2010s AI industry boomed a lot. Now I can do good earning through my life-long passion. I agree that it's rare that your passion and profession are same and it's risky to try that, but life becomes great if you are lucky enough, because you spend most of your life in office and liking that has big effect on your life. I recommend having passion that is similar to your current passion in some way e.g. in terms of creativity, but also provides opportunity for earning and then develop more interest in it. You can develop more interest in your current profession too.

I'm agree with your saying that first, we should adopt a profession that can fulfill our daily needs and then invest time and money on our passion. This way chances of success are more than running after both and gain nothing.
