Hi folks, I just wanted to clarify something I said in this video. I suggested that the Jot 2 wouldn't pair well with slightly warmer headphones, but I need to clarify it so as not to put people off. I LOVE the Jot 2 with my Empyreans which are quite rich sounding and I've just tested the Sundaras with the Asgard 3 and they sound great too so they'll only sound better with the Jot 2. To clarify what I was saying, if you enjoy a warm sound then don't hold back - buy the Jot 2 and love every second of the rest of your listening life 😉. But, if you're seeking a more neutral / analytical sound, the Jot 2 plus a warmer headphone will be taking you a little way away from neutrality. It's not crazy thick like some low quality tube amps, but it's warmer than neutral.

How would you rate THX AAA 789 with Sundara compared to Jot2 with Sundara?
@broccolee8250

@@satyamgupta562 I happen to own THX789 too but I cannot specifically comment on Sundara pairing. THX789 is alot more neutral bright, sounstage wise its flat with lack sense of depth, dynamically less engaging, slightly less detailed, less punchy. Imo, thx 789 is a better pairing for warm headphones instead of jot

Hi Satyam, I'd take the Jot 2 with the Sundaras every single time. It's more 3-dimensional, more dynamic and just a better listening experience

@@broccolee8250 It’s crazy how fast op-amps amplifiers actually got better and flooded the market after the 789 and heresy. Those 2 were my first amps but the 789 sounds like a dinosaur compared to the Magnius imo. Discrete designs are so cool to look at

This is the review that sold me on the Jot 2. I recently upgraded to this from a Topping A30 Pro (which was recommended on a certain website because of its measurements, but to me it sounded flat and boring) to pair with my new Schiit Bifrost 2/64 (which I also upgraded from a Topping D30 Pro for the same reason) and for the first time in ages I actually don't feel the need to upgrade! Everything I have listened to so far sounds absolutely fantastic! Thank you for this review my man, you are a legend!

Thanks Brocco, you da man! 10kSubs! Hopefully the next 10-15k come event faster as you deserve it! Almost seems like they should have put 3 gain settings on this amp. But still for $399 it's a great buy. On Nexus and Continuity. Nexus is their tech of converting SE/BAL (or vise versa) which seems to have little/no difference compared to how they did it in some of their older amps. Continuity is how they make their class AB circuit behave more like Class A. Usually their continuity amps are decently biased into class A (500mW for Asgard3 or 10W for the Aegir speaker amp), but because of the amount of parts that go into a full balanced amp like Jot2 they had to do it slightly differently so in the Jot2 it's called "Continuity S" and has 100mW class A bias.

Ive had one for a month. I picked it up with the multibit dac and it does a great job with the balanced outputs. The one thing that I would note is the floor noise that is present in the single output, compared to the balanced output. That said, in my honest opinion it does feel like it was meant more for the balanced output. I managed to wait for the jot 2 after eying the original for 4 years. And I am very pleased with the performance.

Re-visiting this review after a year or so after watching (and acquiring the Jot2) and I’d say you’re pretty spot on and this is by far the most thorough review of the Jot2 I’ve seen on KZbin. I own the Jot2 and the Soloist and as much as I love the Soloist for its refined approach to detail and wider staging, I find myself listening w/the Jot2 more just due to the more engaging old school vibe. It really wakes up headphones like Clear MG and Ananda while the Soloist tends to take the Arya to its full potential when I need extreme detail and expansive soundstage. With the Jot2, I tend to forget about the gear and just enjoy my music more. And it pairs perfectly w/the Bifrost 2. Although the Soloist is a wonderful pairing there too. Obviously I’m biased here but I don’t think you can do much better at or below $1k for power than either of these headphone amps.

I'm so glad you posted this @darthdurkelthewise320. I currently own the Arya stealth magnet edition paired with the Burson soloist and also have an OG Schiit Magni from like 10 years ago. I thought I was crazy for preferring the sound from the Magni vs. the Burson for most of my listening sessions. The Burson is more detailed and does provide a wider soundstage, but there is something about the Schiit punch and low end that I just find more engaging on the Arya. After rewatching this video trying to recall what @PassionforSound had to say comparing the two I used his recommended track and definitely felt the same as far as the Soloist providing a more fleshed out cello sound vs the Magni. However, I think for the majority of music I tend to listen to the Schiit just provides the more exciting listen.

I have a similar experience as well, except it was between the jot2 and the aune s9c pro. Ultimately the jot2 was just a bit more engaging overall, even though the s9c had a wider soundstage with better details retrieval. The jot2 was not that far behind overall in technicalities, and just had that extra engagement, while the s9c would eventually feel a little restrained in that area.

@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Cosmos, FiiO gear has been a little tricky for me to get my hands on, but I'll see what I can arrange... What I can say is that the THX AAA tech isn't all it's cracked up to be. It measures really well and sounds very clean, but the feedback (feed-forward) process seems to flatten out the soundstage and suck some of the 'magic' out of the music, and I'm not talking about beneficial distortion because I've heard other non-THX gear that measures equally as well, but has a bit more life to it (like the Geshelli Erish). Still, I haven't heard the Q3 so it might be different - I'll see what I can do...

Glad I could help. Even after two years, this review is still very interesting. Right now in April '23 I'm almost sold on the Jot 2 for my venerable HiFiMan HE-6 headphones, in my desktop system with powered Hedd monitors. Here's my questions: (1) is the HE-6 one of those warmish headphones you are cautioning people about when paired with Jot 2? (2) the Burson Soloist - enough power to cope with HE-6 power demands of 83.5 Sensitivity and 50 ohms Impedance? Thx.

I nice experiment would be to get your mitts on some older dacs and amps and see how they compare to the current-day crop. Would this be a valid comparison? I've got a 10 year old Sabre Audio_Gd Compass 2 and it sounds fantastic. Also a Monolith THX Amplifier & DAC (powerful but too clinical). Give us old foosties a reason to upgrade, perhaps? What I can say is that I think the newer device designs are better because they're using dual chips to separate the left and right channels and the output stages have improved in many cases too.

It's not a major problem. The volume pot is high quality - there's just a touch too much power for things like IEMs and super-sensitive headphones. I've rarely found an analog volume control with perfect channel balance throughout so this is very normal. I would personally still by a Jot 2 if I didn't have the Soloist 3X because it's SO MUCH fun that I'd gladly deal with the slightly limited volume range.

The issue of excessive power is legitimate for two reasons: (1) using variable digital volume output on a DAC is undesirable, and (2) maintaining a distance from significant analog volume attenuation leads to better left-right channel balance. Question though! As I look at the max. power rating of SE output, Asgard 3 almost has twice as much power as Jot 2. Could Asgard 3 potentially have the same or even bigger issues? Thank you.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound Жыл бұрын
The issue is actually about gain more than power - I might not have explained it clearly here. There's an interaction between the amount of gain provided by the amp as well as the gain curve of the volume control (i.e. how quickly it increases the volume). I find the Asgard 3 far easier to work with because the balanced output of the Jotunheim 2 delivers twice the voltage of a single ended circuit and therefore is much louder at even the lowest volumes.
@lanx0003
@lanx0003 Жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound When comparing the SE (single-ended) output gain, Jot 2 actually has a lower gain of 15.6dB compared to Asgard 3's 18dB in high gain mode. Both power and gain levels seem to contradict Jot's behavior as described here. My guesstimate is that it might be related to the input impedance. Jot 2 has a much higher input impedance of 50k ohms compared to Asgard 3's 22k ohms, which could result in higher efficiency when being driven by the DAC and hence louder volume output.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound Жыл бұрын
AFAIK, the input impedance only influences the current required from the DAC, not the voltage - voltage will be consistent at 2V (SE) or 4V (balanced) from most DACs. When I was comparing the Asgard and Jot 2 experience, I was referring to the SE output of the Asgard vs the balanced output from the Jot 2.
@lanx0003
@lanx0003 Жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound I did not say input imp. affects voltage. But, to compare apple to apple, if you use Jot's SE input instead, is excessive volume still an issue? Thank you.

@PassionforSound Жыл бұрын
The point is that voltage is the source of volume so the input impedance won't alter the output levels AFAIK. I don't own the Jot 2 (it was on loan) so I can't check for you how the SE outputs compare, but I'd be surprised if they're not basically the same between the Asgard 3 and Jot 2.

In this video you stated that discrete amps typically are more 3 dimensional in presentation than op amps. But then there's the Burson Soloist 3z. It's op amp, right? So the soloist 3x is an exception to the rule? My main HP amp now is the Topping A90 paired up with a Schiit Yggdrasil A2. My 3 best headphones are Audeze LCD-XC and LCD-4, and Sennheiser HD800S. Hello and thank you very much for your review. I also watched your review of the Bifrost 2 DAC and together as a stack they seem to be a formidable force - Excellent bang for buck. My current portable setup is the Chord Mojo + Shure SE846 and have been for a number of years now. I've been considering a desktop setup and after much research, I am considering the Schiit Bifrost 2 + Jotunheim 2 stack. This is for the following reasons: 1. Library is FLAC files ranging from 16-24 bit rate, 44.1-192khz sample rate - no need for DSD or MQA 2. Portability is not necessary as I want a desktop setup. The other items I was considering was the Topping A90 + D90SE or the Chord Hugo 2. From the many reviews I've watched the Topping combo seems to be clear and accurate, but too analytical and too 'straight down the line', whereas the Schiit stack seems to have all the benefits of the Toppings clarity and accuracy, but also some more liveliness for enjoyment too. The Chord Hugo 2 seems to be great also, however is considerably more expensive and not sure if I'll be encountering the realm diminishing returns past the Schiit stack. I also do not need the transportable element of the Chord Hugo 2 either. The Topping stack comes in at approx. AU$2,200, whereas the Schiit stack is approx. AU$2,100 and finally the Chord Hugo 2 is approx. AU$3,700. The music I tend to listen to is mostly 60's Jazz and Classical - live concert recordings. I also occasionally listen to rock and electronic music. The headphones I'm considering pairing with my new stack are either the Sennheiser HD 800S or the Focal Clear/ mg. All items I can demo at my local Hi-Fi store and will do so prior to purchasing, however I would like your help on narrowing down based on my above information.

Hi Brendan, I think you're definitely on the right track with your thinking. If you enjoy the presentation of the Mojo, you'll definitely want to stick to either Chord or Schiit Multibit for the DAC at least. I think the Bifrost 2 and Jotunheim 2 are very hard to beat as a combination. The Hugo 2 is likely a bit more refined and a bit more spacious sounding to but it's also (IMO) not an ideal design for desktop use. I'd avoid the Topping stack if I were you because it will flatten the soundstage and also rob your listening of the organic and natural qualities you'll be used to from the Mojo. With headphones like the HD800S, you'll be glad of the extra note weight and organic character provided by the other two options. Not sure the exact current costs of the headphones you're considering and I haven't heard the Clear MG yet, but can I suggest checking out my review of the Arya stealth magnet version from HiFiMan? The build quality isn't quite as good as the other two on your list, but the sound is fantastic.

@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Reza, using your computer to lower the volume actually degrades the sound quality significantly so it's better not to. There are literally only a handful of headphones on the planet that need more than 1W. Most actually need less than 500mW.
@llr3zall151

@@PassionforSound Are you suggesting that if you eq something using your software you are degrading the sound? Because it is a very similar process! Its like lowering the output of all the frequencies. From personal experience, I have not heard any degradation using eq myself. I know a lot of reviewers (like Andrew from headphone show or Amir from audio science review who is a very objective reviewer btw and always measures everything) who do the same and have no issues with this. It has to be done correctly with the right software though. It is very easy to introduce artifacts when using eq but the general rule is, as long as you are "taking away" and not adding anything to the sound, you should be fine. This is why having a more powerful amp with more "headroom" is advised if you are going to be using eq. I could be wrong, but that has been my experience so far. I have not seen any measurements for before and after eq though! It would be interesting to see what is going on objectively.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Reza, there may be some software programs that do this losslessly, but it does depend a lot on how it is done. For example, high quality playback software like Roon and JRiver both flag the signal as no longer bit-perfect once any in-software volume adjustment or EQ is used. Of course, some of this depends on your views on audio. I personally like to have as perfect as transparent a signal path as possible so I like to have a truly bit-perfect output from the PC and then make any adjustments via the DAC or amp assuming they able to do this losslessly too as some DACs in the past used to drop bit-depth to reduce volume. Thankfully, most of the modern DACs with preamp capabilities are able to adjust the volume losslessly. I'm not suggesting that my approach is right because the differences may be inaudible or barely audible, but it equally doesn't make Andrew or Amir right - it's just different philosophies on signal path.
@llr3zall151
@llr3zall151 3 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound This is why personally, I never take subjective views for granted. Like I stated previously, It would be great if someone (like Amir who has a lot of equipment sitting around!) could experiment with this and see what the actual measurements are. Thanks for your input. Cheers
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Reza, there's nothing wrong with wanting measurements (I enjoy checking out Amir's measurements on a lot of gear), but the measurements don't (can't) capture everything because there are still elements of how sound is reproduced and perceived that science doesn't have the ability to measure. Relying heavily on objective data is a bit like deciding what a wine will taste like by considering only the variety of wine, where it was grown and it's year. Of course, two Cabernet Sauvignon wines made in 2015 in the same country will have similarities, but you won't know the subtle differences until you taste both or speak to people who tasted both. In others words, both the objective and the subjective are valuable and I'd argue that the subjective is actually more valuable in defining what will or won't suit a person's taste in sound because two similarly measuring amps (for example) can still sound very different.

For headphones, i have Hifiman Sundara, HD6XX, HD58X, Fidelio X2HR, Audio Technica 50MX. I am planning to run both Sundara and HD6XX balanced with Jot 2 and already have the cables on the way.

Will the modi 3E dac bottleneck my jotunhiem 2 or will it be good enough until I can afford my bifrost 2?
@PassionforSound

Hi Steven, I was using a DAC for all tests (I can't recall which one). The Modi 3E will be fine initially, but you'll definitely hear some nice improvements (IMO) when you get the Bifrost 2

That's a tough one and it probably won't make much difference as both will be a good initial upgrade, but both will also be limited slightly by the other unit that isn't upgraded. I'd probably swap the amp first though because I think it will be the bigger initial jump

@@PassionforSound and @Human Male, I too was very tempted by the sale as I also have the Clears. But, in the end I pulled the trigger on the Burson Soloist 3XP. I initially wanted to purchase the Jotunheim 2 but decided to go all in with the Burson (I will be using it as a reference headphone amp in my mixing studio). The Arche sale was very tempting indeed but after some detailed investigation over the weekend it turned out that Focal are actually discontinuing the product due to constant problems with it. Random shut downs, USB disconnections among other issues and any firmware apart from the original is practically unusable. Also, for me muting the pre-outs was important and the Focal didn't have that. I really do believe that the Burson Soloist is probably one of the best pairings out there for the Clears. The one thing that the Arche does is that it has the ability to vary it's output impedance which can come in handy, if that's your thing :)

Sounds like you made a great choice, Shanul. I think you'll be very impressed with the Soloist and variable OI is only helpful on a small number of headphones. Plus, keeping the DAC separate allows for easy upgrades of amp or DAC only whenever you want to.

I can't say for certain but I'm fairly confident the SE output sounds more tubey and as you say slower attack after warmup time compared to the balanced.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian, I'm always very careful using tube sounds as a descriptive term because tube amps don't all sound the same (same as solid state). The Mainline amp for example is cleaner and more neutral sounding than the Jotunheim 2 (balanced or SE) and then the Darkvoice 336SE goes the other way, further into warmth and richness. The SE output from the Jot 2 is definitely smoother than the balanced though - that's true.

Great review! I was looking into this for my Sennheiser 58x but then am a bit hesitant after your comment of them being paired together. I was wondering if you were able to test out if that combination is a bit too much as you thought or heard about it from others? If so, do you have any other recommendations for an amp for the 58x - preferably balanced (with pre-amp) if I were to upgrade my headphones later on. Thanks in advance
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 жыл бұрын
I didn't get to try them together, but I'd personally be carefully l careful about buying an amp to suit those headphones specifically because of you do upgrade later, it might not suit what you move to. The HD58X have a fairly unique sound. My comments about the Jot 2 and HD58X were based on the fact that I'm personally not a fan of the 58X, but if you like them, the Jot 2 should be fine and is a great amp. Two other options to consider are the Geshelli Labs E2 (cheaper, but also balanced) and the Singxer SA-1 which has two output impedance modes and may slightly enhance the 58X sound

Just wondering if you’ve done a review of the Ragnarok 2? Considering it as a head phone amp and a speaker amp to my two front speakers through an amp selector to complement my Yammy surround sound Av receiver when I just want stereo. On another note, I wish I knew why we get rorted for US made gear. I've not yet tried a Raggy. I believe the Rag 2 is more speaker amp and less headphone amp so I've never bothered to try and get one. As for getting rorted, I believe some of that might be a result of the distributor knowing they have a local monopoly (unless people order direct from Schiit). There is also the issue of import duties, etc. My Folkvangr cost $300+ to get through customs!

Yeah, a bit of a shame to do that. The volume range isn't a deal breaker unless you're trying to use IEMs so I wouldn't probably go that way (and would choose a different amp entirely for IEMs). The IEMatch also isn't balanced (I believe) so you might as well go for a single-ended amp if you're not using the balanced output.

So I use my shuoer ej07 with the jot and thats the only instance I use the IEMatch dongle out of the SE output, it lowers a mild hiss that I can definitely appreciate even on low gain. I would agree though, there are probably better amps for iems, so i do tend to use my ifi idsd signature for that purpose. I actually feed the Jot with the RCA out from the ifi signature too - to my ears it sounds like a nice combo! :) Thanks for the review btw!

Thanks for sharing that, Ian - makes complete sense. I can't remember which IEMs I tried with the Jot, but I quickly stopped testing because of the limited volume range. It makes sense to use a more suitable device for IEMs like you are.
