Stevie “Passport” Jones grew up singing in his local church choir, where his voice first caught the attention of his congregation. After graduating high school, Darryl worked odd jobs before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968 and sent to Vietnam during the height of the war. While stationed overseas, Stevie found solace in music, often entertaining his fellow soldiers with soulful renditions of the latest hits during downtime. However, as the war came to an end, Stevie made an unconventional decision. Instead of returning home like most of his comrades, he chose to stay in Vietnam. As he famously explained in an interview years later, “The hoes show me too much love out here.” Stevie’s smooth voice made him a local legend in the bustling nightlife of Saigon. In 1975, Stevie recorded his breakout single, “Passport Papi,” an anthem about leaving your troubles behind and finding love and adventure abroad. The song became a surprise hit in the U.S., peaking at #17 on the Billboard R&B charts.
