Best greetings, Neuschwanstein normally in non Corona times gets very crowded in the summer, so waiting hours could be about 1.5 hrs, I love them cows, TODAY IS DAY OF THE 🐄, we are going to Garmisch in October

Nomally the queue-linie start at the entrance over the place down the hill. Waiting time for about 1-2hours if you lucky.Sometimes even longer.The tour itself took only 15min,cause the palace isn``t finish and there not much to see.BUT what you see is very impressive! That´s my exprerience.

Okay now you guys are really making us want to see this now, before it gets crowded, like you said! But you know, we were there in the middle of December one year (when we lived in France) and it wasn’t crowded at all! So maybe that’s a good time to go? I dunno. We took the horse and carriage ride to the top in the snow! It was magical. And we also love Hohenschwangau. And we also preferred staying in Schwangau and not Füssen.

For us Germans is Neuschwanstein nothing special. It's hard to explain what i mean. Castles, Fortresses etc. shoud have a sense, but Neuschwanstein makes no sense, except because it was build for presentation of a dream and it's a modern Schloss and very young. The hype is only because of Disney. ;) For me are very old ruins or big fortresses much more interesting. One very impressive fortress is "Festung Königstein", you should visit that. And when you are there you can also visit the "Basteibrücke", it's near the fortress. ;)

Its peculiarity is merely that it was one of the last buildings to be the result of a princely whim. And why do you preface your highly personal opinion with "for us Germans"?

best video i have ever seen on schloß neuschwanstein. you nailed it. not the castle is the star but the surrounding. when i first went there i was really disappointed about the castle, having seen real ones before (like burg eltz). it all looked like fake and so it is. King Ludwig built it in the 19th century with electric lighted rooms. this has nothing to do with a real medieval castle but Disneyland.....but the setting is so beautiful.

There is a significant difference between a 'Burg' and a 'Schloss'. Unfurtunatly both is called castle in English. Neuschwanstein isn't a 'Burg' or a 'real one', how you seem to call that, it's a 'Schloss'. Palace would probably be the best word to describe it in English.

I visited the castle first when I was a child and it was amazing for me. I loved the golden faucets in shape of swans :-) Later after many years I went to Neuschwanstein with my own daughters and of course they were impressed as well, pretending to be princesses :-) It is a really amazing castle. You are right to say that usually it is totally overcrowded and you won't have any chance buying a ticket on site just in advance online. We tried once but had to wait hours so that we decided just to visit Hohenschwangau and leave out Neuschwanstein.

I have seen the castle Neuschwanstein and I was impressed, not as much as with really old castles, but you have to see it once. We usually go on tours in spring and fall when the sites are not crowded. If you get the chance later on to walk the Mairenbrücke, do so, it is a view you will never forget.

I had to laugh when I saw what you wrote about the Mairenbrücke. I thought I would never get my wife across it! She is absolutely terrified of heights and that bridge looks so . . . hmmm . . . . "swingy". The view down into the gorge is breathtaking!

We received free bus passes when we stayed in Kastelruth in northern Italy, the Dolomites, Surprised us, but sure was appreciated to get to the Seiser Alm. Love your videos!

But if you want a Bratwurst don't buy it up there :D I had to laugh immensily when I figured out it would be cheaper to take the cable train down, buy one there and take the cable train back up again than to buy the Bratwurst at the castle gates. That was a decade ago, I don't know how it is today, but it was a prime example of "tourist premium".

Was there in the wintertime staying with my parents in a small hotel🏨 in FÜSSEN ,not far from the castle,next morning taking breakfast in the hotel ,,,,ist had panoramic window with view at the castle and it was cubberd with snow🌨❄️, because during the night ist snowd in the region…..the VIEW. I visited Neuschwanstein Castle in November 2018 (actually on my birthday). It had snowed prior to our arriving and there was about 5 cm is snow. Because of the snow the only way up tho the castle was to hike or the force drawn carriage. I hiked and was glad i did since the snow made so peaceful and it was not slick at all. Since it was the start f the Christmas Market season there were crowds but not like summer. Only a few tour busses and the parking lot was not even half full. I took a phot of the valley from the balcony you mention and was what I picked for my 2018 Christmas card.

Smart to have gone now - even though the hike you took before the Schloss visit still looked like a hiker's Autobahn. I first went in the Summer of 1991. To say it was packed is an understatement. I literally got pushed out of the way by a Chinese tourist river as it swept its way closer to the gate. I had heard of this phenomenon but never actually expected to be assaulted by one. They were organized, focused and got it done. Anyway... I also took the tour and it's true; despite the impressiveness of the Schloss, the actual finished part is relatively small - but still impressive. Since I was alone then I splurged and stayed at the Hotel near the 'other' Schloss - Hohenschwangau with a spectacular night view of the Schloss. It is older and an original Knight's castle. Also impressive. I've been to Crazy Ludwig's Schloss twice since then with visiting relatives (I live in Munich), because - well - you have to.

I was there about 5 years ago and it was really busy. Got there early in the mor ing and walked up the road as you did and did get passed by the horse drawn carriage. Was quite a beautiful castle and scenery from there was spectacular. Your vid was super and brought back so many good memories. Can’t wait to go back to Germany this fall, As long as covid allows. I was there the first week it opened. We were lucky and our hotel room in Schwangau had a direct view of the castle. We also went to the top of Tegelberg. This time we took our children. My first time was in 1997 before I moved here in 2000. Funny to see things with different eyes - as a tourist vs having lived here so long. Definitely go to the Zugspitze. The gondola ride ( on the Austrian side, not the German side) on the way down is trippy.

We are from Oklahoma City as well and are heading to Munich, Fussen and Salzburg starting July 21. We were very excited to see your videos on Munich and Neushwanstein Castle. We just went online to reserve a time at Neushwanstein and they show that there are no tours available through the end of the month, presumably due to reduced capacity. Were you all able to walk up and get the admission ticket or did you reserve it in advance? We are afraid we may have missed out on getting inside the castle. BTW - We have really enjoyed your videos.

Wow, your views were amazing! Our family visited in May of 2019 and had a much different experience from you. It was really neat, but was a foggy / rainy day. The castle would be totally covered in the fog one minute and then the next, you could see it. Very cool. We also opted for the hike on the paved path up to the castle... and I realized how much out of shape I was. By the time we reached the castle, it was snowing and my kids were making snowballs for family pictures. It was quite crowded, and due to all the reviews I had read that the castle wasn't worth the money of the tour, we opted to not view the inside. I may be questioning that decision now after hearing your review... We were pretty cold and tired, we opted for the few Euros to take the bus down the hill to the parking lot and did not regret it :) We have very fond family memories of our time there, but probably a lot different from yours. Loved your video, made me really miss southern Germany.

I was there once before and it was damn near invisible because it was snowing so much. So not as many tourists as usual, which was nice. I had to visit the castle in my slippers, because I fell into a lake the previous day and my shoes were still sogging wet. Walking around a near-deserted castle in your slippers feels special xD The way up was also nice. I put my granny in a sleigh with a cozy blanket and we watched the snow falling while comfortably making our way up to the castle.

There is a third castle nearby. IT had also a fairttale vibe. "Once upon a time there was a castle". Only a few remains are left😉 When I was there I took the gondel upfirst and walked downwards. Much easier😉

My husband and I were very fortunate to see this castle, do the hike, explore the beautiful little town Fussen and see the inside and most of the outside of the Castle. Our story goes that we hiked up to the castle after debating whether to take a horse drawn carriage at the time, which they were doing rides up and down the trail. We made the decision to walk it up and have a ride on the carriage back down, but they stopped serving carriage tours at about 3pm 😥, which granted was a bit of a bummer as the inside of the castle was beautiful, but we had a few blunders as when we got to the top it was completely fogged over and our legs were totally dead after walking up from the hike and from the very long, long (however gorgeous) inside tour we had - and lots of stairs! lol So had a bit of a wobbly walk back down the trail hoping I wouldn't fall flat on my face from being tired and it was nightfall with hardly any lighting down the trail. 😆 So! It was an adventure needless to say, but a very good and memorable one lol Will definitely go back one day 😁

As a US military dependent, my family visited Neuschwanstein in or about 1960. It left quite an impression on a 12 year old boy. Years later, for our 30th wedding anniversary (1999), my wife and I visited Germany and a definite aim of mine was to re-visit the Schloss. The first visit with my military family was organized for different language tours. The second visit, on our anniversary, had only English or German tours. One of the things I fondly remembered from my first tour was the dinning room that had the dinning table (large), prepared with the meal that was elevated to the dinning area. On the tour with my wife, this was not part of the tour and I thought I misremembered something. I asked the tour guide and was assured this was a feature of the castle that was not part of the current tour. In any event, the event was still amazing and views are spectacular. Bavaria has gorgeous countryside.

As far as I remember, Neuschwanstein doesn't have this elevator for the table - called "Tischlein-deck-dich" after an old Fairy tale, while Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee have it. Neuschwanstein has a normal dumbwaiter.

@@MrLuddis Don't believe that's correct. I've never been to Linderhof or Herrenchiemsee. The tour guide confirmed my recollection. What I remember him telling me, is that the feature had been disabled or was under repair on my 1999 tour. It may be that Ludwig was aware of the "Tischlein-deck-dich" at Linderhof and/or Herrenchiemsee and made an attempted to duplicate at Neuschwanstein. This is my conjecture since I would of had no (and don't now have any) awareness of this feature anywhere else. I remember seeing the table but don't remember seeing it actuated on my 1960s visit. Upon further research, it may be that Ludwig originally wanted this feature because the kitchen was three stories below the dining hall but due to physical issues was not able. I'm guessing the first tour visit explained this, and a twelve year old heard it slightly different, while the adult me asked the question about the table in an unclear manner.

i was there 2 times outside the peak season and vacation season and it was horrible packed! I once had the fastest bus ride of my life there. He raced with the full bus (we were standing) up the serpentines - that was madness. A cyclist had to swerve into the ditch! But 5 minutes before the end we But 5 minutes before the end we still arrived . with bruises, but good.still arrived.

Although I live not far from Neuschwanstein (about 90 min drive), and I've been close to it on several occasions, I never went there. Somehow it never occurred to me that it might be worth the effort. To me, it always looked like a toy castle, not the real thing (and in fact, it's just an reinforced concrete building with a fancy shell around).

Great video. I love the Alps. I've had free bus tickets in several hotels around the Alps region (Austria, Germany). I guess it's promoted by the local municipality or tourist office. It reduces car traffic in town and at the tourist spots. Also, I prefer to take a rental car up into the mountains. I could drive from the Netherlands where I live to the Alps, but it's a long drive and I always find it a bit risky in case my car breaks down in the mountains. So I prefer to fly in and rent a car. It's more expensive, but less worry.

You are lucky to visit wirhout the thousands of tourists usually flooding the castles, mainly Neuschwanstein. King Ludwig Ii of Bavaria built 3 castles, he was a dreamer and way ahead of his time. He was more interested in building fairy tale castles instead of governing the country so the people marked him to be crazy and deprived him of his power. He finally ended up drowning in the Starnberger See.

I never been to this castle ( or better said palace because as I had English in school someday someone asked whats the difference between a Burg and a Schloss in English and my teacher said "Schloss = Palace" and Burg = "Castle") the main difference is just that a burg is less fancy than a Schloss xD so talking about that I was in 1 Palace ( Schloss) and 2 castles (Burg) before here in Germany. 1 Castle was overrun by tourists and the other one was part of a school-trip as I was in 4th grade. The "Palace" was inside a holiday park (You know the places where people can rent small houses to stay and around them are 100 more of these) and I had a tour in all 3 of these and it was kinda cool, except the woman owning the holiday park said her castle would be hounted by ghosts o.o and she said she saw a ghost practicing suicied in her kitchen o.o yikes

a lot of areas within a region offer local bus transport when staying in a local hotel (free meaning you really are paying for it via the local accommodation tax). Great benefit though. Hope you get to Linderhof (another Ludwig castle) which is amongst the most ornate of his castles and one that he spent time in (also has a grotto though not in the castle) where he could enjoy Wagner's operas). Undoubtedly the scenery is second to none. Have been through the castle 4 times and on our last, clouds set in to the point you couldn't see your hand in front of your face on Marienbrucke. Felt sorry for the folks who were there for their first time and all wanting that iconic picture.

The peculiarity of Neuschwanstein is not, as many think, how old it is, but how young it is. The castle was only built in 1870 as an idealized image of a knight's castle from the Middle Ages.

Ludwig was an extraordinarily complex figure - a shy young man who was never meant to be king and so was never trained and taught how to handle the role. Suddenly, because of the death of an older brother, he found himself on the throne at a very young age. As so often with young rulers, there were plenty of councilors keen to take advantage of his inexperience and naivety to further their own positions. He was not mad; he was simply much different than many of the hard-nosed advisors. He actually worked hard at being king, successfully fending off Bismarck and the Prussians for a good while. If you didn´t know there is an old common rule amongst hikers in the Alps.... above 1000m people adress each other with "Du" that´s the socalled "Gipfel Du" ...valid everywhere in the Alps but especially in Austria it is so to say an unwritten law...even the austrian emperor who spent his time in the Alps hunting chamois and ibex was adressed with "Du" instead of "Your Highness" above 1000m...which shows "how serious" that is taken in Austria.

What a shame that you didn‘t go inside Hohenschwangau! I did both of them and liked the inside of Hohenschwangau much better! It was actually lived in and not just some phantasy project of a madman. It also has more traditional decorations, while Neuschwanstein reminds me of a ride from Disneyland…

Neuschwanstein - the king who had it built was a dreamer and fool, albeit, perhaps even because of it, very much liked by the people. He was providing resources to composer Richward Wagner to be able to, well, be a composer. It is also said that king Ludwig II of Bavaria did risk his private fortune for building the castles. He did not take state money for it. I don't know what this exactly entailed. But he was known to hate being king, he did not want to rule, and was generous to the people.

OK, nature in Allgäu is really beautiful. But you know that King Ludwig's castles are all as real as Disneyland, don't you? 😉Neuschwanstein was finished in about 1886 using the most advance construction engineering of that time. It's all kinda fake, nothing to compare with castles from the middle ages. King Ludwig was trying to create a very special kind of fairy tale to live in. 🙃😉 Nevertheless worth visiting.

Now you have visit the Wartburg in Eisenach to understand what Ludwig II. was building and trying to recreate with Neuschwanstein. :-)

There used to be a ruin of a real castle on that hill. The first thing that the Mad scrached of the rocks.
