Thank you so much for all your content. It’s helping me immensely. By the way, (22:22) we do say in English “we have loved” or “I have loved.” For example, “Since I was young, I have loved to swim” would be a perfectly fine sentence. Keep up the good work!

As a beginner, I only use 100% imperfect and 0% preterite, why? There are only 3 irregulars in the imperfect : 1) ir 2)ser 3) ver. The rest are regulars endings ar verbs => aba er / ir verbs => ia On top of this, there are no stem changes in the Imperfects while the Preterite has 1000’s . I will fix with proper past tense, years in the future, when I get better at it.

Andrea, at 00:45 I got caught up on the sentence "Le ha enseñado a niños..." Why do you use "le" instead of "les" ? Are collective groups like children (or adolescents, or adults) considered to be singular here? It made me wonder if it was a concept similar to "la gente" In English we would use plural. "I have taught English to adults." would be "I have taught them English." Would you say "Le he enseñado Inglés a adultos."
@SpanishlandSchool
@SpanishlandSchool 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is correct. That is a great analysis, you are right, we can say LE in this case because "los niños" or "los adultos" is seen as ONE GROUP OF PEOPLE, so yes, it does work the same as when we say "LA GENTE" or "LA POLICÍA". Good job, you got it right!

Mi duda es, ¿puedo decir también «Cuando llegué, la fiesta comenzaba» y «Todos bailaban»? ¿O tienen significados diferentes?
@SpanishlandSchool
@SpanishlandSchool 7 жыл бұрын

The example of "...la puerta estaba abierta..." is not an action. It is in point of fact a state and is the result of a completed action. The completed action is la puerta fue abierta and the resultant state is estaba abierta. Once the motion of opening the door has come to a stop, the non-actional state begins. It is the same as ser casado and estar casado. The action is ser casado and the resultant non-actional state is estar casado. Estar literally refers to a state or status.

But when you were describing the day you said: "Era un dia lluvioso cuando el llego a Nueva York". In both cases you were describing a noun (substantive) and both cases were temporary. Why in the first case you used verbo estar, and at the second case you used verbo ser??? Thank you. Slava.

Why does every translator give me this sentence using the present progressive? It doesnt seem to fit any of the rules:: En total yo pasé sobre cuatro años trabajando y viajando a varios paises del mundo. what is it called when you use the "ando" ending without estar? are you allowed to use ando or iendo in other situations?
@SpanishlandSchool
@SpanishlandSchool 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron, thank you for your question. When a verb ends in -ANDO or -ENDO is in 'gerundio', aka present progressive. It can be used in the construction ESTAR+VERBO+ING but also it can be used with other verbs. A few of them are PASAR, SEGUIR and CONTINUAR. 1) Yo pasé 4 horas estudiando - I spent 4 hours studying. 2) Tú debes continuar estudiando - You must continue studying. 3) Tú debes seguir estudiando - You must keep studying. These are the 3 most common verbs used with the gerundio. I hope this helps!

'i got home' tripped me over. That's more colloquial almost ebonics than correct English. I don't know, it might be correct but it rubs me the wrong way.

@@SpanishlandSchool you know when something feels wrong, but you're not sure ? That's how the construction struck me. My advice, avoid using the word 'got' although I know many use the word to achieve fluency.

In English we wouldn’t say ‘Where were them?’, we would say ‘Where were they?’ Sorry if I sound a smart arse and I expect you know this now anyway. I just felt that I ought to mention it.
