Dear Lindsay, I can't RAVE enough about you and your teaching re watercolor and pastels. I just got mine from Amazon, Pentel 50 oil colors (only about $7). Before I'll try for the first time, I knew to check out YOUR info on youtube first. I LOVE how you explain that by doing something in life, learning new things is what matters. You always make me feel confident and I know even if it turns out horribly, I still DID something worthwhile. (I'm 71, been painting with watercolors since March 2021). You have been such a great influence, I'm on your FB group and LOVE all your administrators and your members are the BEST, KINDEST, CARING people in the world. Thank you for being you (also how you care about our pets regarding our supplies being dangerous possibly..I have 2 cats, big dog, 2 huge turtles). Can't wait to test out my new medium tomorrow!! +CraftyLori I totally understand you; I have a couple of friends that feel that way. However if you were to try soft pastels (as opposed to hard pastels, although both are chalk pastels) you would get much less of the chalk feel. They are almost buttery when you use them; the color is more intense and the crumble not break like chalk hard pastels so maybe they could work or you. Although if you can't even get through them then absolutely pan pastels are the ones for you. Have fun!

I first worked with pastels in college. The one piece still in existence is on colored construction paper, matted and framed and is in a gallery in Seattle in the curator's collection. Since I am a sight impaired artist many who see that piece ask if I will do others. It's been 10yrs since creating that piece... Guess I should create 1 or 2 more. Lol...

I have the basic 12-pc Mungyo soft pastel set and I use it to shade my polymer clay pieces before baking. It's non-toxic and I'm quite happy with the pigments. I use a make-up brush and a q-tip to apply it. I tried picking up a stick to do a simple painting but realized that I don't like the feel of chalk sticking in my hands. Haha. And so I'd just use them for backgrounds in my coloring book and treat it like a pan pastel, by just rubbing a q-tip or the cheap foam applicators (I found a pack of ten) over it ^^"

Excellent, informative, video. Thanks. I hate the feel and gloves make my hands sweat so I use my soft pastel stick with the pan tools. I have them set in foam so they don't move around swiping them... works for me.

Just an fyi on oil pastels. You can use a product called Grumtine, made by Grumbacher, to thin out the pastels on your ground and be like an oil paint. It is made from orange peel oil, smells nice and works well. It isn't the same as turpentine or similar products. I have been using it for many years with my oil pastels, and it works well.

Fun and informative? yes and yes! I have three brands of chalk pencils and my favorites are put out by Hobby Lobby. The are woodless, packed beautifully in firm rubber and very nice to use--They are packaged under masters touch brand. They are more expensive than general's but not bad. The colors are spectacular. Looking forward to this series since I also have some pan pastels, H20 pastels, oil pastels and don't really have a handle on them. Also, I was so sorry to hear about you losing Hazel. Wow, this 2016 video of yours just cycled into my feed so I thought I’d watch & comment....and the info is still good anyway 😺 The Artists Loft (avail Michaels) brand of soft stick pastels are cheap and offer 2 of each of 12 colors. Not pro grade, but if you want to get the feel of what soft pastels can do, it’s a good option in order to see if you may want to make an investment in more expensive ones...or not. I have a good set of Pan Pastels and want to do something really nice one of these days, but have recently been having too much fun with watercolors. Oh well! Thanks! P.S. Dick Blick has an extra excellent very basic how-to using Pan Pastels (from 2009.)

I found a bunch of Strathmore Windpower watercolor paper from when I was learning watercolor and I found out it has great tooth for the harder chalk and oil pastels. I find the tooth too "deep" for softer or creamier pastels. Oh, and I found there's a product on Jerry's (I don't know if it's on the other art supply websites) for storing each of the major brand of pastels. They're called Pastel Pods. I haven't tried them yet, but they look promising for those like me who like to gather many different brands.

Great video. Listened all the way through but you didn't talk about sealing the work and with anything powdery or chalky that needs to be done. If the uses of spray seals needs to be done I have to do it outside with a chemical mask so I would love to know if there is a nontoxic alternative to sealing your work. As a mixed media artist I would like information on combining mediums. I mostly work with acrylic paints and have combine oil pastels with them but I would like to fine out more about mixing in chalk ...if that can be done. Perhaps each layer needs to be sealed?

Hi Lindsey been looking for someone to explain some on the items you shared, I have purchased through the years on sale and now am ready to try them. I do have pastel paper but I wondered especially with the oil pastels, could you also do on a canvas? Thanks
@thefrugalcrafter8 жыл бұрын
you want something rigid with good tooth, canvas will flex and the primer will make the pastel not adhere well.
