Pastels were my medium of choice in art class. I had an awesome art teacher in middle school who helped me realize that, and gave me tips on how to use them. She was very much a "free spirit", so whenever we had an assignment to do, she let us use whatever tools we liked the most, as long as the concept was delivered. For the most part, she just told us were everything was and let us figure it out.

Pastels can look nice and they can blend quite well, but they’re SO messy! Even pastel pencils are a giant pain to sharpen. I remember my mum getting me some coloured pastels for Christmas and when using them to make art, I had to steal one of my mum’s tupperware containers to hold the mess.

Jazza I think you should play around with watercolor pastels and watercolor pencils. In my opinion if you did that you do wouldn't have to do the watercolor part. They are definitely something to work with and I just figured it would be a thing I would like to see you figure out. If you even consider this I would be grateful.

I love the effects of chalk pastels, but I hate working with them with my bare hands. Anyway, you don't really NEED it, but you can layer chalk pastels really well with a spray fixative, and it's really good for sealing the pastel when you're finished so it won't smear or anything in storage. I would highly recommend trying a fixative if you work with chalk pastels again.

Eyy. I just finished a pastel drawing project for my honors drawing and painting class. They were an absolute pain to use! We had to use soft pastels specifically. They’re way too messy of a medium for me. I’m sure many people can make amazing art with those pastels, but I’m definitely not one of them. Good luck to you, Jazza! The problem with Jazzaquin is mostly that he's missing some finishing details. Some edits to the jazzaquin to help him not look lifeless (or like he's been sitting in a blizzard and has hypothermia): 1. Irises and eyeshines- He currently has the fully flat eyes of the dead, and using only the darkest tone from your natural eye color near the pupil makes them look dilated (adding to the dead look). Do two or three tones of blue-grey that are lighter or brighter than you think your natural eye color is. Follow this up with either a gloss clear coat or use white paint for imitation eye shines. Some doll face-up artists do both 2. The lips.- They currently look flat and immovable. Use a darker tone for creases and cracks and a lighter tone for highlights. While you have the gloss out, go ahead and use it on the crevice between the lips. Even if you don't use lip gloss or chapstick, or even lick your lips regularly, there should be some indicators of moisture. And if you don't have moisture there (dehydration or some other reason) There should be even more cracks and dark creases. 3. Attention to shadows and warmer tones- The mannequin has a general face shape, but lacks the same depth as a human face, so it doesn't produce enough natural shadows and tone variance. You did an excellent job adding shadows around the eyes, but didn't do nearly as much around other features (Nose, mouth, jaw, ect.) 4. Highlights- Skin reflects light to a certain degree, far more than a matte paint, but not with the same consistency as a more glossy paint on a smooth plastic. The bottom edge of the eyebrow, the cheek bones, the cupid's bow, the nose ridge and chin all need highlights. If you want to bring out more variance to the highlights quickly (adding to the natural look), a number of face up artists use micro glitter powders to recreate bare skins natural sheen.

Don't be afraid to use your art supplies!! The best way to learn is with experimentation. Jazza (along with a few other art youtubers) have inspired me to retake up soft pastels even though I thought I was awful at using them. The only way to get better is to practice! Do simple things like apples. Trees, mushrooms, sunsets whatever. Do you like galaxies?? Paint galaxies with yourpastels! Oil pastels are the perfect medium for it! You can do it!
