33 years of voicing the same character. That’s longer than Lugosi played Dracula. Ursula was Pat Carroll’s alter ego. She never gave the performance anything less than 110% & the character transcended the film. I’ve seen dozens of her interviews and I miss her greatly.

I love that her natural laugh is essentially just Ursula’s laugh. And the fact that she also voiced Morgana and made her similar, yet distinct from Ursula really shows her acting chops. And I also think it’s fantastic that she literally completed her acting bucket list. Not many people can say that and I can’t think of a more deserving person to have done it.

I had the privilege to actually know Pat. She came to the Regional Theater I worked at in NY. Our theater was 30 minutes outside of Manhattan and I was chosen to drive her back and forth from where she was staying in NYC to our theater. We had so many wonderful conversations on those trips, my 3-month-old daughter was at the theater one day and Pat wanted to hold her. It was so sweet; I of course took pictures of them. After we had moved to AZ I still kept up correspondence with her. I am so blessed to have had that time with her. I cherish those memories.

The wonderful Pat Carroll made the role of Ursula absolutely hers for the ages. Now I haven’t seen the new version, and I’m sure that Melissa McCarthy does her best. But honestly, I do feel bad for Beatrice Arthur for never having the chance to even look at the script. In hindsight, the ONLY other actress I can fathom who could have done justice to Ursula in the animated version BESIDES Pat was Bea. I hope she fired her agent when she found out after the fact…😏
@bigred8432 Жыл бұрын
Bea Arthur could have been an extremely good Disney villain but with Ursula, as she became she wasn’t right Had Arthur been signed on earlier, the role would have been very different, so we should be thankful we got this (Bea could be SO good but she’s slinky and snake like, not a big bloated squid. Bea always had a regal feel. Ms Caroll sounded like someone who thought she was an aristocrat but was fat, common, classless shrew

When I heard of Pat Carroll's passing in 2022, some part of me was crushed. But a major part was saying she had inspired at least a million (each) new mermaids, mermen, and fellow sea witches (like me) to take to the stage and to not be afraid to express their humorous sides, whatever form they happened to take. Wow, the voice of her iconic character in each new appearance, just like Jonathan Freeman for Jafar... what dedication! Oh, there is an idea for a future episode; I saw Jonathan Freeman live on Broadway as Grimsby, funny enough, in addition to being the original Jafar in Aladdin's Broadway version. I'm sure he's done other plays and musicals too, so I would love to hear about it.
