I love this tune already, ultra melodic groove, ultra modern, Synths, EP, Sequencers, Orchestrion, huge sound for a Trio. In some ways you don't think it is Live as the playing and production are so flawless. Listened to this on (not the last) train home from work, always a joy to hear new music from Pat. I can assure you that at this show Pat played plenty of guitar "without electronic help". Listen beyond the "electronics" that offend you here.... you aren't listening to the piece... just the surface.

@@phasespace4700 Right. I hear you... that is true. Pat's career goes in phases so there is usually a bunch of evolutionary parts (which IMO are fine) then a leap. I don't think.we'll ever see a foil to Pat again like Lyle... I see the first part of Side Eye just as Miles did, Pat introduced those guys to the dialect. I will be reviewing Side Eye on my new blog but my review of the Side Eye gig from whence this song is derived is at jazzviewswithcjshearn.tumblr.com. I do love tho how Pat has integrated a new shade of electronics with Francies' playing here. I do understand what you mean about the electronics and adventurousness though. I think that may come in the future

I love how you put that, welcoming an old friend indeed. This is truly truly magical. I am a life long Metheny head (first show, As Falls Wichita, circa 1980, Denton TX) and to my ears this the best thing I've heard in a long time. Anyone heard Lodger off this album? It’s the same key as the song Travels and nearly the same melody, but lacks its harmonic counterpoint and Lyle’s elevating bridge section. What’s old is new again but how to be self-referential without being derivative, that gets harder for us all.

I got a Metheny “SIDE EYE” one time...pun intended (I guess it was more of a “ROLLING EYE”) ☺️ I got to see them in Houston 1982 (w/ POST SHOW stage breakdown…… friend was an Usher) HANGIN’ WITH “THE BOYS”😜 I asked him to SIGN a GROUP ALBUM ‘Single” a BLACK & WHITE PROMO ‘Are You Going With Me’ Cover Jacket (thinking it would be AWESOME for a GROUP SIGNATURE……… lots of WHITE SPACE for MULTIPLE SIGNATURES!! 😆 (I GOT ALL OF EM)😉 Pat inquired WHERE I got this? He had never seen this before (A Major Record Store PROMO COPY for “In-Store playing”……The manager was a friend, knew I was a Metheny FREAK, and gave it to me) I ALSO brought 80/81.... (just for Pat to sign) THEN, I yank out 80/81..... I swear I think thought he was going to refuse!! 😆.... HE DIDN’T!! But I surely got a DOUBLE TAKE on the request!!! My HERO didn’t disappoint!!!💜💜💜✨✨✨ NOW………… I spend ALL DAY at my Mac Pro, trying to “BE” ALL OF THEM!!! (miss ya FOREVER Lyle)💔 I remember walking out with them, seeing Steve Rodby SLINGING THAT ‘ACOUSTIC BASS’ ...hauling it back. (I guess he didn’t trust the ROADIES) I asked “Do you want me to carry that?” He replied “SURE”!!! AND I DID!!! WHAT AN AMAZING DAY that was!! 40 years ago!!! (How is that possible??) TIME FLIES!!!😉

But nigh on unlistenable. Such is not the case with this song. But I feel it breaks no new ground. It's nice, but that's about it.
