After I posted it, my students were amused that I could barely get through any lesson or rehearsal without quoting Pat. :)

That one owes a lot to Pat and Rick, obviously, but there's lots more on the channel to check out. Glad you found it!

Brilliant analysis. I've watched that interview twice and it's crystal clear that Pat is all about the music.

Good evening ^^ I'm practicing rule # 6 and rule # 5 again now. It's a very rudimentary practice, but it's an approach note practice that goes toward the target note. I realized that I should do it rather than practice the phrase. And rule # 2 was very encouraging. Thank you very much for your valuable lecture today!

In this video I share my thoughts on one of the best interviews I've ever seen. Pat Metheny is a font of wisdom and inspiration. The link to the interview is in the description.

As a university professor and researcher myself (philosophy and cognitive science), and a back-to-trumpet-trumpeter, I must say that this video is probably more a lesson about music than a lesson in musical (and just any art as well) pedagogy. Chase, you are one of a kind, by your generosity and your commitment to both your musical and professoral art. As a back-to-trumpet-trumpeter, you sure help me gain confidence in my trying to sound good again, after all these years of silence. Thank you so much! And I hope that your students listen to your videaos, because they are just too good to not to! (If that makes any sense, English is not my mother tongue...) Cheers!

@@jeanrobillard8630 Thanks for those very kind words, Jean--I might borrow the phrase 'professorial art'. The rule ‘Be Who You Are’ speaks to the fact that we are all essentially one-of-a-kind, and therein lies our greatest strength if we are able to trust in the validity of our own identity. Pat Metheny is a model of that kind of thinking.
