We have heard this song with that upbeat samba sound but it’s actually a sad song of unrequited love. Metheny’s rendition is hauntingly beautiful, it’s how one would feel if we were invisible to the person we love!!!
@utiosorio42014 жыл бұрын
@Anikawa Nakawanake I know the song in Portuguese and the Spanish and English versions and it makes me immensely happy when I hear it but if closed attention is paid to the lyrics it is about a sad (lonely) man who loves a girl but she doesn’t know he exists "Oh how I watch her so sadly, how can I tell her I love her...". That being said it’s a glorious song!!! Pat Metheny’s version is soulful or even sorrowful but it is masterful.

Metheny deconstructs and reconstructs the most played brazilian music outside Brazil, crossing paths of the melody, at the same time so distant and so close of it. Walks between tunes by Jobim and himself, defining what is a personal reading of a masterpiece work of a genius by another genius. And he makes sounds the sound of silence.

Hats off to Pat for doing it differently! It is gorgeous realized this way. Lets not forget, Pat performed with Jobim on several occasions. I'm sure Antonio Carlos Jobim would completely approve. I’ve been aware of Pat for some years now and have the ‘what’s it all about album’. Whilst I’m not hugely into his electric guitar music, I am an acoustic player and really enjoy his acoustic baritone pieces. I love the way he plays with the melody and his expression with rubato. I appreciate great players like Tommy Emmanuel but I have come to the conclusion that Pat Metheny is a genius of the guitar and I am extremely grateful for his musical contribution in my life.

Pat Metheny can take whatever liberties he wants when it comes to doing music. He is so ahead of his time; deconstructing Ipanema is gutsy because so many people (jazz lovers) know this tune. But isn't this what makes Metheny great?! It is called being an artist.
@heldersufiano28168 жыл бұрын
he can take whatever liberties he wants........but expect us to like it is other matter............fooling around with music that he does understand the spirit of it!!!! he raped the "girl from ipanema" !!!! his version is called "the girl from hell"

You know what's beautiful about music? That we don't all have to like the same things. I love the original and sing it at every show, that does not mean I cannot appreciate what Pat Metheny has done as an interpretive piece. I have a saying which I apply to cases such as these "you can't argue with taste." While I don't share your opinion in this case, I respect it. Have a great day!

I don't see him as "ahead of his time" (which would also imply some kind of pure linear development of music). I see Pat Metheny as a rather conservative and very serious master of his craft. He's simply skilled at what he does - whether composing, doing orchestration, interpreting or improvising. But don't forget there have been many masters, all around the globe (one of them being his friend Lyle Mays).
@heldersufiano28168 жыл бұрын

This is harmonically and melodically very advanced interpretation of the song and interestingly reworked to a point so that the original music is obscure- to appreciate, you have to really hang on to the original melody in your mind's ear.
@MuseDuCafe9 жыл бұрын
Metheny has done here no more than is usually expected in the classical music community, i.e. not merely a stylish arrangement of a tune or piece, but a reworking into something distinctly fresh, the original being only the starting take-off point vs. the goal of keeping the tune recognizable. It is quite beautiful, while comments below confirm what I know anyway; when musicians do this to a popular tune not a lot of fans of the song care 'to go there.'
@SwordOfLight799 жыл бұрын
The classical music community, being largely regurgitative, is usually devoid of such a level of imagination. Such alchemy is beyond the cerebral grasp of most of those dweebs. I would say he is an exception.
@nostalgiacreep9 жыл бұрын
+SwordOfLight79 i agree, classical is mainly about people reciting music hundreds of years old. and i like classical but creativity isnt really what its about
@voliteon8 жыл бұрын
+MuseDuCafe Nice to praise Pat, but I have no idea how you can comapre it to classical music community. They don't rework or rearrange things at al, they recite as closely as possible, so not sure where you got that from.
@rjlchristie6 жыл бұрын
@ MuseDuCafe You make fair comment. The replies above to the comment reflect an ignorance of the broader classical music community and in particular, arrangers in the contemporary classical music field. As a classical guitarist I rate Metheny's arrangements very highly and at a similar artistic level as those of Leo Brouwer. However, I don't think that much of Metheny's technical command of the guitar when compared to the standards of modern concert (classical) guitarists. It would be nice to have these arrangements published and to hear them taken up by the classical music community.

Intriguing, dissonant and pensive interpretation of Jobim's classic Bossa Nova, Pop song. Remember this man can do virtually anything with music so give it a few listens before you come to your own conclusion. Wow. That was quite a ride. Marvelous, haunting, deeply emotional. Also so imaginative. Dark, brooding, filled with desperate loneliness and longing that drives it to abstraction in places. Pat is such a true master. He knows how to reach deep inside a melody and use voicings and harmonies that take this classic tune that's been played millions of times into a different place. Not at all your parent's Girl From Ipanema. Of course, comments like mine probably say more about my own state of mind. Nonetheless, this was just gorgeous and awesome. So happy to see Pat still reaching after all his years of wonderful playing and innovating.
