I love the dichotomy of how the melody/harmony/form is both followed but also transcended into free form at the same time.

i think metheny used his well known riffs way too much in this song.. many of those lines sound way too much like a mashup of his signature resources.
@rafaelsg79646 жыл бұрын
nonamed _ agreed. The thing is his licks and riffs are so cool and his sense of rhythm so strong that he gets away with it playing always the same vocabulary.

Matheny playing Matheny? Gee! Who would have thought that??
@ronaldrogers78285 жыл бұрын
These riffs were not new back then, all would be developed into later compositions, but it was also about letting his rhythm section stretch out & improv a little as well.....perhaps you missed that part

Pat is a great guitar player ... but this has little to do with this jazz standard ...
@Caravaggio445 жыл бұрын
?? Really, Pat quotes the melody and harmonic form throughout. Can you elaborate? You do realize, I assume, that the tradition of this music is to take tunes (Broadway show tunes, originals, etc...) and improvise on them in a unique way.
@fretbuzz595 жыл бұрын
This has everything to do with this song *as a jazz standard* and the way brilliant players have used it as a vehicle for improvisation.
@henrikduende4 жыл бұрын
I hear the song just find through out. Maybe you need to be more familiar with the tune 🤷🏻♂️
@egyptianminor3 жыл бұрын
What you mean? He takes some harmonic liberties here and there but largely the changes are here, sure he uses chromaticism in his lines and superimposes other meters and creates those polymeric moments in some of his lines...but the heart of the song is there, including melody.
