I have played for 50 years and about 5 years ago, I started taking advanced lessons in theory and other styles. My teacher is about 10 years younger than I am and a seasoned touring and session guy. He knew very little about PT, and I was having him help me understand, or better replicate, some of PTs songs. He was simply floored at the talent level that PT possesses. For instance, we figured out that the slide playing in "You Don't Love Me" is not any kind of exotic tuning....it is in standard tuning.....his ability to play lead on top really complicated rhythms is pretty uncommon. I feel he is one of the most under rated musicians of that era. I feel blessed that he still tours and plays like it is still fun for him.

Great feature, Dunsy! Pat Travers and his fellow Canadian, Frank Marino, both had real funk in their hard rock alongside blues and jazz elements. Maybe they were ahead of their time, or just too different to appeal to the mainstream? They deserve to be better known today. Makin’ Magic and Putting it Straight are two of my favourite albums :)

Thank ya, Sir! Yeah, big fan of Frank Marino as well - doubt I could master any of his songs, kind you! Could be that there weren't enough straight ahead rockers on the albums and didn't have a wider rock appeal? Certainly the guitar fraternity loves them.

Love the album. Wonderful personal and honest review. Album still stands after 43 years! I actually had the pleasure of meeting Pat Travers in the early 90s. It's funny how when you're first getting into stuff that a lot of it comes from the guys who were a couple of years older and what they were listening to - where I grew up those guys were big into Status Quo, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, so that was the first sort of things I would have looked for. Not one single person I knew was into PT. I guess that comes down to geography.

I immediately bought the album the next day and have been listening to it ever since. . . . and trying to figure out what Thrall was doing! 😁 Keep up the good work dear sir!

I've been watching his show from Rockpalast in 1976 which recently came out on YT. At 22 this young man is holding court with a power trio on a tele and melody maker, playing interesting chord progressions with complex rhythms while connecting to a rock audience. Add his ability to use the flanger, chorus and wah wah pedals with ease. This was still new technology and there weren't many resources to learn from. His sound was a breath of fresh air when I first heard him in the late 70s. Even my parents didn't hate him. I wore out the live tape. He went from playing large venues to bars and is still happy to be playing live at 70. Sadly he is most remembered for Snortin' whiskey and Boom boom which got overplayed.

Great album. I strongly recommend the album that Pat Thrall did with ex Deep Purple's Glenn Hughes. It's called "Hughes and Thrall." Glenn said that Thrall was the best guitarist he ever worked with. Thrall held back with Traverse. He's too much of a gentleman to want to upstage Traverse, but he blazed on the album with Hughes. Sadly they were both heroin addicts and were usually too stoned to gig, so nobody in the music biz wanted to work with them. Their album was a brief flash of brilliance. Thrall also played on a live album with Meatloaf and a live one with Asia. His chops give me penis envy.

Hey great album . I grew up in Orlando florida and right after this album came out Pat Travers moved from Miami to Orlando Florida and he made a great habit of showing up in the local area clubs and more times than not whoever the local group playing that night would invite Pat to come up on stage with them and jam . Plus he played around central florida all the time . Daytona Beach would put on free concerts at the plaza hotel during spring break every single year and I got to see them there in 1981 I think it was . I also seen him again at a really small local club called Fern Park Station and he just killed it . the place just held maybe 150 people total and was packed out elbow to elbow and i was right up front against the stage where I was literally 3-5 feet away from Pat . I could almost reach out and touch him if I wanted to . But I guess the best show of his i saw was in march 1982 at the Florida World Music Festival in the Tangerine bowl football stadium there in Orlando .These Festivals would run from 12 noon to 12 midnight with around 7 to 10 different popular bands playing . This was the show that Fournier was the main headliner . and Ozzy and the Blizzard of Ozz band (with Randy Rhoads) was one of the band scheduled to perform but the day before was the day Randy Rhoads got killed in a plane crash just 30 miles north of Orlando and Ozzy had to cancel . and where Pat Travers lived close by he offered his band to play in place of Ozzy . I had tickets a month before this show and was looking forward to seeing Randy Rhoads again . I had already seen Ozzy the year before on September 1981 in Tampa Florida on the Blizzard of Ozz tour with Def Leppard opening up for Ozzy and that was the best group I had ever seen. Randy Rhoads was just the greatest guitarist I've ever seen and I had seen Eddie and Van Halen twice .Jeff Beck . Vivian Campbell and countless other players but in my opinion Randy was better than them all . I was15 years old when I saw them and Randy just blew my mind . Don't get me wrong I love Ozzy but make no mistake about it Randy Rhoads was the main attraction in this band . So when I heard that he got killed on the radio it brought tears to my eyes . no joke it really saddened me that much . I went to the festival and Pat Travers was great but it was just a sad concert you could see it had made a lot of people sad and were so disappointed over Rhoads death . He has been by far my favorite guitarist of all time . Those first 2 Ozzy solo records were just Masterpieces in my opinion especially Diary of a Madman

@@reverendjim9891 100% that. It took my playing - and listening habits - some time to catch up. Now I spin this album (well, CD mostly these days!) with such regularity that even my long suffering wife knows who it is, lol!

Spot on with Travers as blues based and Thrall jazzy/fusion. Hard to beat that rhythm section. RIP Mars. My only issue with the live release is that they stepped up a few songs in tempo. Wasn't always keen on the production of it either.

Became an instant PTB fan back in ‘70’s high school. Ironically, bought “Heat in the Street”, at a used record store in Maui, Christmas, ‘77. Finally saw him with Ritchie Blackmore’s 🌈. Ritchie & Co. wiped the stage with them, opening the show. This was in Canada, (I heard PTB opened for Rainbow in the States). I was pissed, cuz Pat only played keys, during a laidback set…so much so, that I left early❗️Late ‘90’s, caught him in a small venue, great show & then once again, 2019. 👍🏻 I agree with most, that his best group was with Thrall, Cowling & Aldridge. Sure wished I’d seen that lineup live! 🇨🇦

Yeah, they seemed to go through that period when Pat was way more into keyboards (I guess a bit like Ronnie Montrose who kinda did the same for a bit?). That line up with the 2 Pat's and the killer rhythm section is hard to beat for anyone, absolutely brilliant.
@loilt50916 ай бұрын
@@DunsysGuitarWorld Nice call with Ronnie, as a longtime Edgar Winter fan…saw Ronnie live, once, about 30 years ago. Recall him with a female drummer. They opened for either the Dixie Dregs or Robben Ford? I also caught Aldridge with Ozzy's smokin' band in '81; Rudy Sarzo & Randy Rhoads. 🇨🇦

First saw Pat Travers open for Cheap Trick on the Dream Police tour, I think it was, in 1978 or 1979. Saw him again a couple years later as a power trio after Thrall left the band, and once more after that. There are definite jazz influences in his songs, which is probably why his biggest airplay hit, "Boom Boom, Out Go the Lights," was a blues cover. His original material didn't connect as well for most fans at that time, though he was impressive as hell as a live act. Personally, I love a song from his later years in the MTV era called, "I'd Rather See You Dead," a tune that probably not be recorded today because it's politically incorrect and misogynistic as hell, though it's clearly NOT meant to be taken seriously. Now that was some bill, Cheap Trick AND Pat Travers! Yeah, I think you could be right, for every straight up rocker, there were a couple a tracks which I think I would say were "trickier", if that makes sense? A bit more of a challenge to those of us with straight forward rock-ears.

Awesome PT commentary. Upon hearing Boom Boom Out Go The Lights at the age of 14 in 1979 from the head's car stereos in the school parking smoking joints before school I was an instant fan. Then when crash and burn hit and Snortin Whiskey and Drinking Cocaine was all over the radio, A major fan ever since. ha Funny story from Pat himself about his Snortin Whiskey song. They were in FL. working on what would be the crash and burn album. Pat was laid back about the band showing up, it wasn't set in stone. Anyway, Pat Thrall still hadn't showed up and he is now 3 hours late and finally he comes through the studio doors all blasted with his GF/wife, one arm hanging over her shoulder, beer in the other hand, one of her breastuals hanging out of her top and Pat asks, what the hell have you been doing? Pat blurts out, Snortin whiskey and drinkin cocaine. HAHA He was so blasted from snortin coke and drinking whiskey he mixed up the words. Travers immediately thought, I am going to use that for a song! Which he did, He already had most of the music worked out and wrote the lyrics from that one phrase. He also said he gave Pat 50% of the songwriting credit just for that one line. ha

Thanks for checking it out, Sir - man, fan times back in 1979 by the sounds of it! Absolutely love the story about how they ended up with the Snortin' title. Truly living the dream!

Fav live albums from My childhood This One, Double Live Gonzo, Exit Stage Left, Unleashed In The East, Steppenwolf Live!

Travers, Trower and Marino, now there's a magnificent triumvirate! Agree that those live albums are all killer, although I've never heard the Steppenwolf one, but I'll be checking that out after I finish listening to the John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band album!

Make sure you listen to the John cafferty album_ tough all over. They're both good strange they're from the north Jersey but they are song sound a little Tex-Mex and they talked about working in oil fields in the south which is strange. And you know that he was the one singing in the Eddie and the cruisers one and two movies Eddie and the cruisers two is one of my favorite movies.

I saw pat at a few day on the greens in Oakland in the 70s and early 80s. That album was great because it was his best songs live and he's a live band kind of act. I find his studio albums didn't have that, every song is killer aspect. That live album was a staple in our high school parking lot.
