@@drewarnold6741 yes exactly. Judge should have no repped him so he could adjust and he wouldn't be in this position. It's so easy to "feel bad" as a judge and just give the person the rep, but in this situation it's really doing them a disservice. Yes 90% of the reps (on the box) were bad. I believe it’s because of the requirement they added where you are not allowed to look down when doing step ups and must be looking forward. That is what HQ has penalized others for I believe. Definitely listen to Craig Richie’s and Sevan with Hiller’s latest videos noting the problems with the judging. Glad that Vellner is moving on but bummed for people like Paige Powers. HQ needs to fix this.

It brings on feelings watching football when the refs are making ticky tacky calls and it makes everyone watching start to cringe and enjoy the process less. This person is clearly doing steps up.
@veronicazimmerman32946 ай бұрын
It’s definitely not the best angle for his box step ups. Wish he were directly 90degrees to camera rather than 45, but maybe HQ asked for that. I believe they don’t like that the shoulders are before hips a touch. Should be box step overs either way. Including Hard to judge movements with multiple/different judges makes zero sense if the goal is consistent judging / fairness of competition. PS Go Pat!!!🎉

Step ups seem a little soft BUT nothing I would think should be penalized. By ‘soft’ I mean Pat isn’t exaggerating extension. Other than that, Pat never showed his cal on rower, which I THINK was required and why CF rules said you could have a mobile video recorder. Not sure if grabbing rower handle before start is allowed or not, but seems Pat did that too? Even if not stated in rules, Pat should not have tempted the situation given it has always been a rule. Overall, I suspect the penalty came on the rower.

But hey, from one stranger to another, if you did a great job, more power to you! Judging should be strict, but should also be clear beyond doubt to everyone (certified).
@yurikcoelho23026 ай бұрын
I'm a huge fan of Vellner, but what i saw from that angle is that in some reps the left knee doesn't extend full, it stays a little bent, so I guess that's the reason CF HQ gave that penalty.
@emmacisar11686 ай бұрын
It really bothers me Pat was penalized so severely and that many others were too. This clearly shows that Crossfit is not doing a good job communicating the movement requirements to the athletes. Crossfit should be allowing a redo on this workout based on how severely this has affected all the athletes' seasons and careers.

penalty doesnt fit the crime right? .... i mean if he did it again and was super deliberate. maybe his score drops 8? this should have been a 5-10 percent penalty at most. its super frustrating that crossfit doesnt have this stuff in better order

@@laurenmorreale2358 You are right. I went and check the standard movement on the site. It clearly states the movement. Everyone is getting upset about the penalties the athletes should make sure to read and view the movement before sending the video. It doesn't hurt to double check.
@Barkely37216 ай бұрын
@@KippingItRealcrossfit Exactly! The penalty doesn't fit the crime. They are strictly enforcing a standard on a movement that requires no skill or talent. And it's resulting in the elimination of many very skilled and talented athletes. Do we really want to see the best box steppers at the Games? If CrossFit suddenly wants to get strict on movement standards, why not look at the lockout on the ring muscle-ups or the shoulder and hip extension on the HSPU. This is just stupid.

Pat does and always has moved exceptionally well. The particular judge or judges that viewed Pats and the other top athletes videos for this workout forget this is an intense physical sport and absolute, machine like perfection in any intense physical sport is impossible. Imagine if CMC got his TD's called back for breaking stride?! Pat stood up, locked his knees and noticeably opened his hips on every step up. The angle for filming was shit but does he need pro videographers PLUS a judge for every workout now? Pats not whining or making a fuss but he has every right too. Same with most of the other tops athletes that got screwed. Everyone that's done CrossFit long enough and watched enough comps, knows what Sh&%#y reps are. These aren't them. See ya at the games PV.
@nicholassellers8166 ай бұрын
Good on you for sharing the video and I bet they are hitting you when it comes to the box step ups, specifically knee and hip extension on some of the reps. Here is the thing about judging though, the judge needs to be more strict and not friendly with you because CF isn’t going to be. From what I’ve been hearing from Games athletes is that they want it to be more professional so if it’s just slightly not locked out that kinda is like a tennis ball on the line or a cleat hitting any white paint. Just putting thoughts out there, I hope it’s not received negatively, I’m a fan. Best of luck!
@TimMcQuaid-sl2fd6 ай бұрын
Regardless of what everyone thinks of the reps and the application of rules / standards here, I feel like it wasn't that long ago that CrossFit coined the phrase "the athlete demonstrated the capacity to do the work". This seems a bit too far in the other direction so maybe we could find something in the middle that just right Goldilocks.

It is worth noting that they gave this penalty to Pat who can still make semi finals with this score. the same penalty to any of the top guys in the East region would miss the cut and not make semis, including Jeff Adler (defending games champ) so the question is, do we think this video is so lacking proper movement that it should be eliminating men who are a legitimate threat to win the crossfit games??
