I should have just started and ended with that comment! Summed it up perfectly. Why that isn't the highlighted and pinned comment for Patagonia is interesting...marketing is asleep on that one. Thanks for checking this one out, even though it was from a couch it was really fun to make and dive deep into the history and materials. With the founder of Patagonia GIVING 3 billion of non-voting stock to the Holdfast Collective last year, I felt pretty confident leaning into the companies sustainability efforts, obviously more than marketing hype and very legit. A few days went by after I scheduled this, thinking about those 1985 baggies just out there in the wild...I had to snag them. Those need to be preserved in a frame or something.

I do enjoy my baggies for their comfort, durability, and appearance. However, the lack of give on the fabric creates issues for me when hiking steep inclines. If my thigh is brought high enough, the short's legs adhere, pulling the waist down in the back. The red ones are very prone to this happening (not sure why). Maybe I'll try the ladies model.

That’s very interesting… are you wearing 7” or 5”? I’m wondering if it’s the 7” further down the thigh snagging on you. For the most part I only have ONE pair that seems to fit me differently than the rest, it just happens to be one I forgot to put in the video. It’s some printed 7” and those just tend to fall down and have a weaker waist elastic than the rest for some reason. So much so they are retired from backpacking or hiking even tho they are only like 4 years old. The other ones from this year fit way more solid and don’t feel like they will fall down at all. But you are correct, there is basically Zero give on the fabric, it’s a pretty solid nylon that almost feels permanently starched. Good for holding shape and durability but has to rely on the baggie design in order to move with you.

@@zacmagers I have two pairs of baggies. both are 5" and the same size. One is blue patterned and the other red. Though not immune, the blue shorts don't give me nearly the problems the red ones do. Not sure if it's the fit or the fabric, but something is undeniably different. Yes, the nylon is very durable. My blue shorts come with me on many trips and handle all kinds of abuse. I've encountered consistency issues with other Patagonia shorts: "baggies lights". Totally different model. Have you tried them? They are a great fit and material for me. I need to size up and the length is significantly different across colors. The real downside that things spill out of the pockets. Since you don't use the pockets anyhow, you might consider trying them.

@sanfransimo So clearly seems like there are some inconsistencies in manufacturing, that’s no good! My theory so far was the printed ones ( the ones that also happen to constantly go on sale ) were somehow different and that was the cause. Sounds like that’s not your experience tho. I’ll have to see how my new batch of solid colors do around the 12 month mark. I haven’t tried lights, I just took a look at Patagonias shorts offerings, lots of variants! When I was researching baggies I noticed there was a demand for the river shorts variant of the baggies that had a built in belt…that would be interesting if they brought those back in action. That’s like the ultimate 80s / 90s vibe right there

@@zacmagers My GF was in apparel manufacturing for a while. She notes that consistent materials sourcing is always a challenge from year to year. Lots of things change. Also origin of manufacturing come into play. A factory in Vietnam may be treating patterns slightly differently than a factor in Cambodia. All of this gives a lot of fluidity to even legacy models (like the baggies). Still, Patagonia pushes the bounds of that. Yes, they have many variations of shorts. I'm most curious about the 9 trials, and now the women's baggies. I do wish they'd get away from "baggies" moniker. The baggies lights have literally nothing in common with the OG baggies. Most of the negative reviews seem to be from folks who were expecting some kind of through line. Just looked at those river baggies. They look very much like the OG baggies. I've now got an idea of sewing some loops on my red (sumac) baggies that I might use a simple webbing belt. Maybe that will keep them hoisted up. Thanks!

I cut only the elastic band out of mine rather than the whole liner. It’s great

Hey Zac what size are the women’s baggies? Would L be equal to men’s medium?
@zacmagers
@zacmagers 7 ай бұрын
Howdy! That’s a great question I should have mentioned that in the video… So both the men’s and women’s baggies in this video are medium. BUT, to your second question, are they equivalent, I’d say almost. The women’s are slightly tighter in the thigh, and almost unnoticeably tighter in the elastic waist band. Overall yes, if you take off a medium men’s and immediately put on a women’s medium you will feel a slight snugger fit, but it’s very comfortable at least with someone my size. Which may be actually preferred for some now that’ I think about it since people tend to think these are overly baggy, so maybe the women’s is a good solution for that. For my weight / build, I think the women’s large would be too lose in the waistband

Patagonia Baggies 7 are awesome. I have been wearing them for the past 3 years every summer and they look still the same. Super comfortable. I use them for swimming , riding bike, sports and just on casual evenings. I absolutely love them. Btw qq - do you wear them on top of underwear or without?
@zacmagers

Baggies rock ! Ran into someone yesterday in Topanga Canyon rocking some bright yellow ones, awesome. SO ... in general I stopped wearing underwear about 4 years ago and Ill never go back. What a ridiculous garment... Anyways, exposure of twig and berries while wearing baggies increases a substantial amount, so Im mindful of this while Im at brunch, but on the trail its a freedom thats hard to match. The only time Ive had to be aware of the risk of my decisions was passing over a massive amount of ground bees, Im talking thousands, that was scary. Made it out alive

@@zacmagers Ground bees ! Damn... Thank god they didn't decide to setup a nest under to baggies lol... I usually do wear underwear if I'm not planning to go to the lake in summers. Otherwise if its just meeting friends or going for a walk with my girlfriend then I wear the underwear. Sorry I saw the part of the video where you talk about underwear after posting my first comment. I kinda like the inner linings, not sure why you get rid of them. Btw I got introduced to Patagonia and the baggies during pandamic 2020 - the best thing that happend to me. Since then Patagonia has become my favorite brand. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Zurich, Switzerland.

Got to roll with what is the best feel for you! No doubt. Happy to know someone else can appreciate wearing these around casually! Its too cold over here in LA and I cant wait to get into shorts again. As for the lining, I have no idea why but ever since I was a kid like we are talking 5, I always hated the liner and I remeber using my dads wall paper scisiors to cut them out of whatever shorts I had then... probably B.U.M. or Bugle Boy haha. My first day of kindergarden I had on hot pink swim shorts... thanks early 90's! Cant go wrong with Patagonia, one of the last remaining HUGE original backpacking brands that didn't sell out and really has some good level headed people running the place. Glad you found a brand that works best for you. Nice me meet you from Switzerland!

What size is your ladies patagonia baggies? I wear medium in mens version😊
@zacmagers
@zacmagers Ай бұрын
So I just stayed with medium ( medium in mens and medium in women's ) and foooor sure, the women's medium are a little snug, but I happen to like that. If you spend a lot of time with leg day, that might not work out too well especially taking big incline steps. So far the switch has been working out great !

How is the rise on the w version? Is it the same as m?
@zacmagers
@zacmagers 2 ай бұрын
Howdy there ! So definitely, the W version, even both being equal in the 5 inch specifications, is a little higher rise, both in overall length and crotch. Not enough for it to impact my movement, rise up my leg during climbing, so on. But as a male, if you are going commando style on your adventures, sitting down with your legs crossed or out, you may find more freedom than anticipated … Thanks for checking out the vid !

what about sizing? i was hoping u wud talk about that. do men order a size up in womens baggies or are they virtually identical in sizes
@zacmagers
@zacmagers 2 ай бұрын
It’s freaking tricky with these sizings at least in my experience. All the shorts in this video women’s or men’s are medium. The men’s medium ( solid color ) fit perfectly for me and in pants I wear a 32 The men’s medium ( print / pattern ) seem to fit a little loose on me, so I’m unable to carry anything in my pockets or they fall. I may possibly be imagining things because why would print / pattern baggies be made different…but that’s my perceived experience so far. The women’s mediums so far as I can tell fit a we snug at first, and after about 5 wears feel just like the men’s medium, can’t tell any difference at all. Hope that helps ! Cheers
