Same experience. Watched over and over because my brother worked in a movie theater (I was born 1964). Gave my life to the Lord and this movie played such a big part. I still ‘sing’ the scriptures when I come to a part quoted in Godspell.

It was so revolutionary at the time. My sister's high school class performed it in our little rural town and the audience just loved it so much. I loved the combination of soft, gentle Jesus, and modern clothing, dance, and song. It really brought the more pleasant aspects of Christianity to a new generation of people.

Godspell was the first Broadway musical my parents took me to as a child. My mom won tickets to Godspell plus backstage passes. I got to meet most of the cast that was in the movie backstage, when they played on Broadway. In fact, Victor Garber walked out into the audience as Jesus, and I got to sit on his lap. I was about 3 yrs old.

I remember seeing a live stage production of "Godspell" back in the late 80s/early 90s...and at least one or two of the cast members had tears on their faces during this scene (they chose not to use clown/face paint in this production). I have a friend who used to be an acting teacher (probably a bit more Method than Stanislavsky), and he says that a critical part of being a good actor is being able to resonate with what your character is feeling. If you can't, then the audience will pick up on it no matter what you do in an attempt to fake it and they won't consider you convincing.

My middle school drama club went to a theater competition in Bucks County PA in (I believe it was) 1982 and a rival high school put on a production of Godspell. I had never experienced Jesus in this personal way before. I was raised a Catholic who really only went to church when visiting grandma. I fell in love with this musical, and with Jesus. As I grew, I fell away and followed the world, but gave my life to Jesus again, four years ago, and He has radically transformed my life. I look back on this play as the first time I knew who I belonged to. The movie is so well done and really captures how we come to Him as little children. 🙏 ❤

@@ghostly10562 Tell me about it! In the UK the start of the war coincided almost 100% with the "official" end of the pandemic, so no let-up. The Russians keep threatening the UK with nuclear bombs, or with a radioactive tsunami, which sounds mad, but somewhere deep down it affects us. Paradoxically, Her Majesty's death and funeral was a wonderfully moving, uniting, touching, joyful, grateful, forgiving occasion, and truly "majestic". And I am absolutely SURE the Holy Spirit "did a deal" with The Queen - a good Christian - making sure she could be used to serve and do good one more time. And she did. Phase 1 was at the Jubilee, when she recorded that teat-time scene with Paddington. This was how she (or the Holy Spirit) made sure that Her Majesty made an impression on even the youngest kids, and - as you know - Paddington was written by Michael Bond, who did not die when 41 other people in the same building were killed by a German raid, a man who was inspired by the sight of refugee kids in WW2, but only wrote the books when he saw a last, lonely bear on a store shelf on Christmas Eve and had to buy it for his wife! Of course Paddington was housed by the family living at WINDSOR Gardens. Things have meaning, even in 2022, but the moment the Queen was buried Putin escalated his war which is evil not just because it is bad, but also because it is chaotic, mad, founded upon lies and non-forgiveness, and an absurd, meaningless fantasy for its leader, even as it is more deadly for the attacking soldiers even than the attacked. And that's 2022 - the choice between good and evil is clear. Halloween offered more temptations of evil, that even killed 150 in Seoul (say "Soul"), and that was the forces of evil striking bak yet again. Only God can solve our problems now, I am convinced. Not politicians, surely not celebrities, but also not scientists - who somewhat failed over COVID.

That was then ... how much worse are things now?! I was Born Again on 28-2-21, so I am praising God too - including today a few hours ago because of the wonderful beauty of yellow leaves fallen on green grass! Doubtless the people in the above movie would have "got" that / "seen" that well enough. It's only acting, isn't it? But don't you think they look at him / Him in a VERY special way?

This was the first story of the life of Jesus that could relate to. Everything beautifully thought out and portrayed in a way that a child of the 60's and 70's could understand. The first for me that spoke to me and that I could get a grip on the meaning of that Holy story. Now that I am older I understand even more the meaning of the songs and the words. I still get this inward rush of emotion from this musical which helped me translate the written word in the Bible and it's meaning for me in my life.

This song is about Jewish prisoners being taunted by their guards “Sing us one of the songs of Zion.” “How can we sing in a foreign land?”

Knowing that makes this scene so much more heartbreaking--the Hebrew prisoners taunted by their captors, and Jesus going to give His last goodbyes, and while we, the audience, look on as proxy captors and metaphorical salvation, as we yearn for the metaphore to be made into reality. I think this is the beauty of this song that tears at the heartstrings so, that theater become reality.

I loved this movie, even before I became a Born Again Christian. The songs and storyline are beautiful depictions of Jesus' path as he lead his disciples and was crucified.

Most interesting thing about this song are the lyrics it’s somehow is giving into being enslaved by someone who wants to rule you but then allowing them to do that because we give ourselves in music so the music is the solid-state. True torment and being captured then comes such beauty and the music comforts us even at the harshest of times. For me the song foreshadows the agony the trial the crucifixion but then the glorious Resurrection. But I was in my 20s I got to play the role Steven/Jesus it was a dream come true because the Godspell the film soundtrack was the first 33 the third album that I ever was given by my parents. By the time I was two years old I could read a book but the biggest joy of my childhood wasn’t playing with G.I. Joe toys or Tonka trucks. No. It was listening to music especiallyThis soundtrack from the film. My sister who is also my godmother is 13 years older than me she taught me how to read when I was three years old I didn’t understand every single word especially if there’s more than three syllables lol but I couldn’t comprehend and read more than just a child’s book. One of the things we did every good Friday as a family which to stay home or go to church for several hours between 12 and three and pray and read the Bible and be quiet there is no speaking between 12 and three for many many years at 12 o’clock the weather will get very gloomy very dark in the skies there’s sometimes with wind and heavy torrential downpour of rain and at 3 PM there was always thunder and lightning in the sky. I would fight me but it would also make me cry now because I was afraid of the storm but it was because I knew that if we were collectively celebrating holy week and Easter Sunday we could be so joyous it was through the pain that Jesus endured for the world that our hearts to break and then rebuild. In the song by my side, there’s a section where Jesus Gary speaks and says what will you give me to betray him to you…Whenever I heard that section of by my side I would cry my eyes out something touched me deeply I knew exactly what was happening in the story and what was happening for me was that I was upset because I said how could a friend do that to a friend? And why did they these people hurt my friend, Jesus Christ. I always will refer to him as Lord God Savior and son of the Lord but moreover I’ve always call Jesus Christ, my friend. From Alas for you through the torment in the garden, I’ve often had about my head I didn’t need to watch the movie or listen to the soundtrack or watch the album spin on the turntable I just was in the moment constantly even as a baby child. I still ask those questions. How and why could someone hurt a friend so badly and severely? Why did those people distrust shame and hurt and kill my friend, Jesus Christ? Then the music heals my heart and soothes the savage beast within everyone. On the Willows And By my side are my favorite songs and the most gorgeous moments is in the story/ score. I love the moments where he goes to each of the actors and they have a moment to say goodbye just as he washed their feet at the last supper it’s this moment that I had the hardest time getting through on stage because I knew what it meant I knew how it felt I don’t lost a parent at that point in my life and some friends due to horrible diseases and it’s never easy to say goodbye to someone especially when they’re dying before you want them to or you think they ever could pass away. The night actors that played the show with me every night made those moments genuine and different every night when I went to each one of them I was Eye 2 Eye privately. With these beautiful people pouring my heart out but also being strong to continue to tell the story without wailing and sobbing on stage Before an audience. There was one other moment they got me on one special night during the performance, my father is in the house sitting second row center and when it came to the agony in the garden I held my hands up in the air looking up into the balcony same father take this cup away for me… My father‘s chin dropped to his chest and his shoulders for bobbing up and down and I knew that he was crying for me as Jesus in the story and also has his son here on earth. I never like to see my parents cry but this moment was so special because I knew that he was in the moment with me whether he saw his son playing a part or whether he saw the Jesus character living through the agony I think was a combination of both of those feelings for him it certainly was for me. After the show I got out of my costume and took off my face paint and went to the lobby to greet my dad and ask him what he thought of the production. He stood there were tears still in his eyes speechless and could barely make eye contact with me because he want to hide the fact that he’s been crying. So I just kind of lightly said hey we were that bad where we made you cry was that bad huh? Lol and he looked me in the eyes and said that my performance was beautiful and then my mother in heaven would be so proud of me. You don’t get better critiques than that no matter who reviews the show or who you work with or what at least you might get from random audience members. When a parent tells you that they’re proud of you and they actually are feeling the heartbreak that you feel as the actor in the role.… That’s the greatest compliment I could ever have in my life except for this complement, I know that Jesus believes me to be his friend like I believe him to be mine. May God bless and keep all of you wonderful people may he shine his face upon you and be gracious onto each of you amen and thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and your feelings and your thumbs up with me. It helps so much to know that I’m not allowed to be alone. You’ve proven that to me.
