Thanks for your efforts in making and filming your hydroponics garden. I'm totally new to all this and only found you because KZbin recommended I watch a 'true garden, vertical growing' video. I then looked at the prices of buying a 'true tower' and lost a bit of hope...but you've just restored faith that I can make my own one. I hope the English weather will allow me to have it outside. Cheers again, tremendously helpful.

Good day, Part 1: TIP TIP TIP TIP 40 mm holes perfectly round and close water. Make a hole of 70% (+/- 30mm) Make sure you have a pipe large of the planned hole and a sponge with cold water. Put a paint fohne here and heat around the hole. Do not overheat, may discolour slightly but do not burn, black !! This makes the palstic smoth. Now stop the tube directly from the inside (also outside), let the tube in and cool it off with the wet sponge. Then remove the tube. You now have a perfect round hole with a collar that closes well. This goes with every flat tube where a spout must be made !! suc6 John, Netherland

Excellent project and very inspiring for me to think along the same lines. A couple of questions: What do you use for growing medium, is it rock wool or something else. Also, do the seedling roots have to stick out of the elbows in the tank so as to catch the water spray or a horizontal direction of the sprays is enough for the water to reach the roots. Thanks
@patchtoplate-australia9 жыл бұрын
chandra0102 G'Day and thanks for the questions. Yes I normally grow in rockwool as the cubes fit neatly into the grow tubes. I only wait for a root to appear through the bottom of the rockwool before placing in the tower. The roots don't have to hang out the bottom of the elbow as the misting water and nutrient travel travel into to each grow site easily. As the plant grows the roots can just hang in to the toweras they get bigger. I haven't lost any plants in the tower so they all appear to be getting what they need right from young seedlings through to full size plants.

Have you herd of the B. A. Kratki type hydroponic systems. They don't require a pump of any kind. So there is less chance of a crop loss. And they are about as cheap a set up as you can do. it only requires a fluid tank with a light tight cover, that you poke holes in and by using a round hole with a square peace of soft foam as a planting medium and plug you can reduce the cost of construction. ounce it's built all you need add is fluid and plants or seeds.

To save effort on the sanding of the fittings to get a tight fit, have you tried using a heat gun to soften the barrel spot and push (force) the fitting into the hole of the barrel. If you have tried this, which method is easier?
@patchtoplate-australia9 жыл бұрын
+John Sluga Hi John. I did try the heat gun option but without sanding the elbows down it distorted the barrel a bit too much for my liking and I was worried the barrel might split. In the end I sanded them all and just used a little bit of heat on some of the holes to assist (mainly around the vertical seam where the barrel is thicker and wouldn't give as much). I just call that the grow tank and the other tank is the reservoir. Pump doesn't need a lot of power, just enough to lift from the reservoir and get a decent spray. Mine is just a $100 pressure pump. Sprayer generally runs for 10 seconds every 5 minutes but there are lots of variations to that and they all seem to work OK. It depends on the crop type, the difference between an aeroponic tower and a hydroponc tower like the tower garden is control. The hydroponic towers haave to run the pump for longer to make up for the uneven distribution. Accoording to a tower farm owner a single 10ft tall 52 site tower runs the pump for 12 minutes per hour which cost him 216w per day. He also says the plants in the 52 site tower use 4-7L per day so you can see how much extra water is being pumped. With an aeroponic tower you can deliver the amount you choose , the mist reaches everything. If the tower uses 4-7L a day you can choose a misting duration and timing that supplies 8L or even7.1L if you choose to. The farm owner doesnt have that option because the method doesnt support it. He couldnt run the pump for 3 seconds, and if he could it wouldnt help. He cant distribute 3 seconds worth of water evenly to all 52 plants in the tower. The towers use a 45w Sicce Synchra Silent 3.0.

@patchtoplate-australia9 жыл бұрын
+ImMADasAMeatAxe thanks for watching and good question mate, have toyed with the idea myself. The limitation I can see is the build up of heat in the drum. My current system effectively has a double reservoir, one of the reasons for that design is to allow more water in the system circulating more often to dissipate heat. Of course the requirement for that depends on where you live - in some places the ability to hold and accumulate the heat might me more of a benefit. I am in the tropics so keeping the internal temperature down is important so I don't cook the roots. I do use a fogger though in my plant cloning system and that works perfectly.

seanosomething Haven't been dealing with anyone else on purchasing. Got some good advice from a guy on here including cheap interval timers etc. Like the main unit, I am continuing with the DIY approach so I'll buy everything as separate components and assemble. The interval timer will need a bit of soldering but the rest should be straight forward (fingers crossed). That helps keep it affordable for those that are into a bit of DIY work. The DC and solar idea is more about making it stand alone so people can place it away from mains power if they need to - and that led to the idea of minimising pump run time through a pressure tank. Work in progress and learning lots through both success and failure :) Like your idea of the fan - have toyed with that myself. I think my next step will be to build a second unit to test different things while having a real point of comparison. Keep me posted on your progress - sounds interesting and happy to help with any advice if I can.

Love the stand alone idea.... Just a thought for you, as a comparison, your next barrel should be black.... and the outer sprayed white (couple or more cans of white enamel?(even sheeted with white contact plastic).. i know you will have an improvement in the rootzone... the "ambient" light in there right now is stifling development... Id love to see a side by side with just that difference (i know you know this already...) What pressure are you stepping up to? 100-160 psi? Id be interested to see the difference with the drop in droplet size... (am sort of banking on it!) Makes complete sense... then its just a matter of cycle times... Let me know those bits and pieces.. hear from you shortly... Cheers mate...

Am planing to start aqua phonic, hydroponics and aeronautics ,Vertical farm but i need full knowledge i have been watched many video am interest to start a small scale business . can you help me with full package video or books to start this

The aquaponic idea caught a lot of attention but is not really cost effective and not as precise nutritionally. My plans were for a big commercial aquaponic operation but working with a university and doing lots of research on it, it is best to leave the fish part off. Lots of headaches and very little profit from the fish.

I'd suggest picking just one method to try at first. If you're going vertical if suggest hydroponics rather than aeroponics. Aeroponics gives better results overall and CAN be used vertically but is harder to make work vertically.

Thanks for this. I don't know if you are keeping in touch with your channel now, but if you are I would appreciate a parts list and links (Home Depot for the nozzles?), along with the veggie group that works well as a family for this system. For example, not everyone will know that peppers are a bad idea for this aeroponics system.

DO YOU EAT YOUR SALAD FULL OF GROWTH CHEMICAL? I ASSUME THE WATER IN THE BARREL IS NOT PURE WATER THAT YOU CAN JUST DRINK RIGHT OUT OFF.

+KimChiTofu G'Day. I do use organic nutrients but having said that, I wouldn't recommend drinking them any more than I'd recommend eating the chicken manure and worm castings I regularly put on my organic soil-based vegetable patch. Plants have this amazing ability to sythesise nutrients from raw sources we shouldn't eat to produce nutrient-rich growth that we should...very cool. PS: From a risk perspective I'd drink the water in the barrel long before I'd eat my compost mix :)

i wonder if you can grow with out nutrients? will plants grow as big as your plants?
@patchtoplate-australia8 жыл бұрын
+KimChiTofu as a general rule living things need nourishment to grow and the better you meet the needs of the, in this case, plant, the more healthy it will be. Hope that answers your question.

That is silly. The nutrients are those nature itself demands. Your body is water and chemicals and this aversion to nutrition is saying you should not eat anything.

Have you ever calculate the carbon footprint of a product? This is a technical demonstration of a mistake. Non sustainable way.

Geza-If you're so worried about carbon foot print, why don't you tell Al Gore and Obama to stop flying private jets to green summits and conferences. You people make me sick.
