According to eminent philosopher and literary critic Abu Sayeed Ayyub, Rabindranath Tagore, in the twilight of his life, had fallen prey to a sense of hopelessness and questioned, “Where is the end of the path, what lies at the end?” These sentiments are reflected in this song, Pather shesh kothay, shesh kothay, ki aachhe sheshe!
Then out of the gloom appears a glimmer of hope, with the line: “Paar aachhey go paar aachhe - paar aachhe kon deshe?” an assurance, possibly to a friend, of a shore across the sea, although devoid of a destination. This line is surely one of Tagore’s most enduring among his lyrics. As a matter of fact, Ayyub adds, “I have not found such a rich expression of tired, hopeless, pained thoughts in the writings of any other poet.”
Tagore starts the song by contemplating the final destination of the path, asking where it ultimately leads and what awaits at its end. This existential inquiry sets the tone for introspection and a search for meaning. Phalguni Mookhopadhayay is the founder-Chancellor of Brainware University, founder-Chairman and Managing-Director of Brainware Consultancy Private Limited and founder-Chairman of Webguru Infosystems Private Limited. He did his schooling at Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Narendrapur, and graduated with honours in Economics from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. He completed his masters in Economics from Calcutta University and MBA from IISWBM, before joining Hindustan Lever as a management trainee. He worked as a market planner for the ABP group for nearly a decade before striking out on his own and successfully launching two private limited companies and one University. Phalguni Mookhopadhayay is a self-taught digital artist, a versatile photographer, a filmmaker and a weekend singer who has already recorded 78 songs and is now immersed in a project to popularise Tagore songs among a global audience.
