Everyone will have their own preferences when it comes to animal companions, so don't second-guess yourself if you don't want the big cat. It is great if your focus is solely damage potential per round. The bear gets the Rend ability, which allows another attack if it lands two in the round. The mastodon gains Trample. It can charge through enemies, knocking down everyone between itself & its target. This is extremely useful, as you can cast sickening vines, spikes, or pits in the area of those who were knocked over, forcing them to make additional reflex saves while prone at a hefty disadvantage. The trip ability on the dog & the wolf can negate spellcasting enemies. Quite often they have to use their action to stand again, which provokes attacks of opportunity from adjacent melee characters, including the dog or wolf so that they once again may be tripped while standing. The lizard & centipede have a poison attack which damages dexterity. Remember, if any stat drops to 0, the target dies. Sometimes have the largest HP pool or the most attacks isn't enough to win a fight. For example, if you really want to jam up a corridor so your archers & casters can do their thing, enlarge your animal companion. Enlarged creatures have an increase to their strength stat, which is used to determine the success of a trip. Rangers fight smarter, not harder. No hate or disrespect to Ranger Tony. We all have to pick the style which suits us best and having the big kitty maul things with five attacks is a perfectly acceptable route. EDIT: Hasting the kitty is a great way to chew through a group of enemies who have it surrounded. It will keep attacking any enemy within melee range as long as it has attacks left.

This is an absolutely great guide, I'm mostly just posting to boost the algorithm, and also because I like discussing my builds Personally I like to take the dog companion instead of the similodon. I really like that free trip, especially since I often build my party to take advantage/force attacks of opportunity, even if you don't get an AoO off it means the baddie can't make his full attack Also if you like the wolf better for flavor it's nearly identical to the dog, except the dog has 1 higher strength bonus, and strength is used tor CMB (trip). But they're so close you could use either one Having said that, if you don't have a party that is based around getting a whole bunch of attacks of opportunity then simolodon is absolutely the way to go, they do more damage than almost anything except Nok-Nok

Nice guide, but i think 20 main stat is really needed for damage dealers (+1 hit on long distance doing big work). And an important note - the ranger protagonist allows you not to take the most boring companion in the game - Ekundayo (you really need a ranger on the highest difficulty in the game)

Is point blank master at lvl 6 still relevant since turn based mode allows you to just disengage for free with the five step thing (don’t remember the name exactly)?

You may be correct that repositioning with the 5 foot step thing may be able to sometimes get you out of range of an attack of opportunity, but I would not always trust it. Also consider that there may be times when you are cornered and have no where to go, or even when you decide you have to make the shot without repositioning Ideally you should never let anyone get that close to your archer, but there are any number of ways that the enemy can get in melee range without you being able to avoid it, i.e. paralysis/hold person, teleportation or even just really high movement rate

Just hit level 13 took deadly aim...still have devoured of metal...now question should i keep deadly aim on ? Even with devoure penalty?

My advice, yes unless you only hit on a 20.... Then test it for one round and see if the target number goes down much Especially with the damage reduction at this point deadly aim will almost always result in a net gain

Would it be a bad idea to start off as a rogue so I can get sneak attack? And then go full ranger? I just like the idea of sneak attacking with a bow. Thank you for the build videos.

If you are going to do that you need to get a bit closer. There is a limit of how far you can be when sneak attacking with a bow. I think it is 30 feet, but I have no idea how close that really is because I do not know imperial

Hey thanks been following this just like I did with your Balder gate.. I'm level 11 now should I use the Devourer of metal or no because it's a strength composite bow what's a good bow mid game

@@willthrizzal2647 I built my MC (fighter) to be primarily a melee character, first sword and board then transitioned into two weapon fighting, but I put a few feats into archery so she wouldn't be bad at that, since I'm of the opinion that every character ought to have a ranged weapon.... I legitimately do more damage with the devourer of metal than I do with my scimitars. And the accuracy difference isn't much (I switch to shortswords if the enemy is too hard to hit) I don't remember exactly what my ability scores were but I think it was something like 17 17 12 10 10 12 I thought I was going to be bad at creating my first character but she seems overpowered at times.

Would you recommend taking points from con. wis or both and putting strength up to 16 or is the damage increase not worth it? Also, how about a later dip into Vivisectionist for the dex mutagen?

Taking points from Con is fine if you are sure energies are never going to get up in your face. Taking points from Wis will mean you do not get any spells, which I also sometimes do. As for dipping into other classes I generally do not do that so I will not give advice on that

How did you pick Point Blank Master if you didn't meet the requirements? It looks like you can't pick it, but you did anyway? Another question, why a 14 CON if the plan is to stay in the back and use a bow? Would two points somewhere else be more helpful?

When you gain your Ranger combat style feats, i.e. at level 2 etc, you get those feats even if you do not meet the prerequisites. So you can get point blank master even if you are not a fighter, or you can take two weapon fighting even if your Dex is too low. As for Con, I go to 14 mostly for early game where you have no animal companion to shield you

For maximize animal companion performance better is chose ranger or hunter? Wchich has the strongest animal build?

I have not played with the Hunter class yet, but based on the descriptions of the feats I would say that the Hunter has the strongest animal build. As a hunter you get your animal companion at Level 1 and the Ranger only gets it at Level 4 Hunters have Teamwork feats that they automatically share with their animal companion Hunters have some other special features that they also add to their animal companion

I disagree with your comment Chaotic vs Lawful. I usually play Paladin, Paladins are the exterminators of evil. Its their reckless devotion to destroying evil that makes them difficult to play Chaotic good are not as driven as lawful good characters. A chaotic good would be more hesitant to killing young trolls in cold blood. I think the correct alignment for a Ranger is Neutral Good or True Neutral. As that what nature is...neutral. Nature is both Lawful but at the same time it can be Chaotic.

why not dump intelligence or charisma all the way to 7? maybe increase strength or dex further; also 13 on wisdom might seem like a poor uneven number but there are items with uneven bonuses (+1, +3, +5)

Could certainly do charisma but dropping into will lose skill points. Wisdom on Ranger is only used for spell's levels which I do not see as critical for this NPC

Generally I find the Ranger spells pretty disappointing. The only ones that are useful are the ones that can buff your pet

RangerTony this is the first ranger I’ve ever made. Usually when I play in my parties on table top I go with an up close fighter. So I’ve taken the acid for my pet but I am not sure from there

No there is a save game editor that allows you to edit the XP. I am not sure if it works for WotR but it did work for KM

Wouldn't playing an elf be better? you don't have th bonus feat but you'll have the composite longbow straight out of the gate.

Not sure what you mean by they get a composite long bow out of the gate? All Rangers start with a normal longbow. Yes elves do get proficiency with bows but so do Rangers. You do not get any feats as an elf that make you a better Ranger, and the extra dear humans get allows then to progress faster. In my current all Ranger play through I have a human, elf, dwarf and half orc Ranger and currently at level 8 only the humans have weapon focus in their bows because the other races do not get the bonus feat at first level

@@rangertony lol my bad, ive been playing for like 3 days and i just now saw that the feat also gives a +1 to attack and stuff. I thought you where taking the feat to be able to wear comp bows, so i thought why isnt he playing an elf?
