Idk if Paizo did it first, but i think Geb is the model for relatively rare idea of "undead society" in RPG settings. Pillars of eternity 2 had a funny side area where the entire population of the island are ghouls and zombies who are brainwashed to think that they are normal people, then in recent 5e settings there was Midgard where "darakhul empire" is basically this world's Underdark, only its denizens are all undead, but all these examples came out after published book about Geb.
@TheMythkeeper Жыл бұрын
In Starfinder they have a whole planet of undead as well. That also appears to be the concept of the empire in the "Gideon the Ninth" series by Tamsyn Muir.

...Nehekhara? :)
@quint3ssent1a Жыл бұрын
@@goransekulic3671 from what I learned about undead in Warhammer, they are basically mindless and just serve as a tool to whatever necromancer bound them, while in Geb undead form stratified society with even the lowest members of that society being undead by their own accord, not because they were raised by some other person and will turn to dust the moment that person turns his attention away.
@goransekulic3671 Жыл бұрын
@@quint3ssent1a Tomb Kings are actually the basis for nuNecron and as such, yes, they have their mindless Undead, but most of them are actually trapped in a bone prison as it were. Some chose to awake and some got awoken, but all of them are trapped in a world that moved far beyond their time. nuNecron are a SF version of that. Undead society. Now, I don't know the details such as who awoke Settra or Khatep or some such. But yeah. It is different than Geb. And I would actually prefer Nehekhara. Given that their rulers aren't actively malicious(just very, very full of themselves and cranky) like Geb's rulers often are.
@goransekulic3671 Жыл бұрын
@@quint3ssent1a With that said, Warhammer(either) is distinctly very aristocratic(gee, like Englishmen made it?). Meaning that everything below a Necrotect or a Liche Priest isn't really important. This applies to EVERY FACTION btw. I don't always welcome this with open arms tbh. Could be because I don't like Lords+ depicted, but ... So, it is very nice to see Geb etc fleshed out. I think flavour wise I prefer Ustalav but there's a lot of little details here I like. The kulonet dwarves sounded really interesting and I like the set up of Yleb, with it's necromancy schools, tight controls on the living and vampire who can get you the right papers. It sounds like a fun set up for a short game. Perhaps a heist.
@TheMythkeeper Жыл бұрын
Geb makes Ustalav look much more conventional in many ways. Sure there are vampires, werewolves and zombies running around, but by and large they're not running the show. Humans are still in charge and the church of Pharasma and her agents are very active and working hard to keep the population safe from the depradations of the living dead. Ustalav is in a state of conflict, which is cool, while Geb is actually very settled in its current state (minus the potential war with Nex).
@lkriticos7619 Жыл бұрын
@@TheMythkeeper That's a really good way to describe the difference: Ustalav is in a state of conflict and Geb is very settled. I think for me personally that means I can see more ways to run a game in Ustalav; because there's constant conflict and chaos. That leaves room for a lot of the kinds of adventure hooks I like for short games. Geb's settled, set state makes it an interesting addition to the world. It's good to have an example of what it means when the undead 'win'. But (for me) it also makes it feel like a setting more suitable for a long campaign then a short game, and I see less points where I could make a long term game my players would enjoy. That's a personal thing though! It's a good, well crafted part of the world. There's a lot of interesting stuff there. I think my preference probably just highlights my own game preferences. And it's a good thing that Pathfinder has so many varied, rich settings in its world: it leaves room for all kinds of players and GMs to find something they like.

Love the depth and access ability of these. I'm running a Gravelands campaign atm and wonder what the relation between the Knights of Lastwall and Geb would be now. Maybe enough desperation could form some tenuous relation?
@TheMythkeeper Жыл бұрын
This is a great meaty question that deserves a serious answer. Let's start with Geb/Graveland relations before we get to the Knights of Lastwall. The Ghost King and Tar-Baphon both rule nations of the living dead, but they are not friendly. First, they are both undead despots and they dislike anyone who is a challenge to their power. Second, their is something even more personal at play, which is that because of the Whispering Tyrant's return, Geb's favored servant Arazni has abdicated her position and abandoned him. He likely blames Tar-Baphon for this. This means that if there are any relations between Geb and the Gravelands its not at the national level, but rather connections being formed between the lieutenants and servants of the two undead lords that might find some mutual advantage in cooperation. Such alliances might even be brokered by neutral, undead-friendly third parties, like the Midnight Guard of Nidal or the agents of Walkena just to give a couple examples. That being said, just because Geb and Tar-Baphon are not allies does not make Geb a prospective ally to the Knights of Lastwall. Consider that Geb mutilated and defiled Arazni, who was once the patron saint of the Knights of Lastwall. That's a lot to set aside, even if they were to find common cause. That being said, the Knights of Lastwall may find common cause with some of the Bloodlords of Geb, especially those who were quite loyal to Arazni. Don't forget Arazni is still around and continues to move covertly against the Whispering Tyrant. Though a liche, the Knights have a soft-spot for her. If Arazni loyalists can still be found in Geb, they could prove allies to the Knights of Lastwall. All food for thought... ;-)

Gradually, they begin to unobtrusively demonstrate their power to each other: either Geb will arrive in a wagon made of bones pulled by two undead horses, then Nex will demonstrate trees improved by magic and give Geb one of their beautiful fruits for a sample, and so on. And at one point, Geb, a representative of a noble house, refined, with excellent taste in everything, so demonstrates his superiority in Art that the irascible commoner can not stand it and begins to prepare his first meanness against an old friend.

The dwarves necromancers of the Darklands under Geb sound like the White Necromancer class from Kobold press.

Absolutely. Kulenett white necromancers would be a pretty appropriate use of that class

My favourite character I’m currently playing is a prophet of Aroden from Geb in WoTR. He believes Aroden can be resurrected like Arazni and tries to be a lawful-good (LN to be honest) necromancer treating the zombies he creates with great respect I’m… lowkey obsessed with this character and started writing in-universe papers and dissertations from his perspective (“on the ethics of the Art”) I’m actually watching this video for research for his next work xd I’m having lots of fun with this guy

@@TheMythkeeper The best part is, when I created the character I had no idea the Lich Path existed in WoTR! So when my GM introduced Zacharius I went completely nuts! I never suspected necromancy could play any role in a campaign focused on paladins fighting demons 😅

Okay, I was expecting a history lesson, but even their popular fashion is mentioned. That's just ridiculous and amazing. I love how in depth Golarion is and how fleshed out and living it seems. It still does not pull away Geb from my top position of countries to wipe off the map given the chance.

The lore is the strength of pathfinder, and honestly if your players are enjoying 5E, its close enough to 1E that you could probably pick up any 1E AP and run it as a 5E game.

Played RotRL once upon a time, but never thought there'd be a place this cool in Golarion. I think my next character is going to be a skeleton for hire looking to make a name for themself so they can unlive it up in Geb.

I really like the video, but I just wanted to make some quick corrections/clarifications on two points, at least for people who are reading the comments after watching the video for the first time or whatever. First, Arazni was literally unable to disobey Geb due to his control over her (Gods and Magic, pg 54); second, it was not that Aroden sent her to aid the Knights of Ozem, but rather that they--at a time when they were led by Iomedae, mind you--forcibly bound her into service to their cause, fearing she would abandon them (Knights of Lastwall, pg 9). I hope this isn't rude, I'm just a shameless Arazni stan and am very familiar with her lore.

Is there a way to request what regions to do next or are you covering what interests you most first?
@TheMythkeeper Жыл бұрын
Of course! Put it in the comments. The reason Geb came out as early as it did is because I have a member that was pushing hard for Impossible Lands content.
@rancidrance875 Жыл бұрын
@MythKeeper In that case, I would like to politely request coverage of Lastwall and the Gravelands. I think the history if the region is really interesting, how a good knightly order ended up doing some terrible things (see the fate of Arazni), the effect the return of the whispering tyrant has had, the almost nuclear wasteland impact of The Radient Fire. The current knights of lastwall also how their order is trying to operate very differently from the shining crusade + all the fun character that appear in the Knights of Lastwall book. It's a region with a full continuous history and detailed characters, I'm a big fan of it. Similarly I'm a big fan of your work, keep it up! Thanks

@@rancidrance875 Awesome. This is definitely something I plan to cover. Coming up on my Avistan videos I have Mendev/Brevoy/Iobaria coming out next (all in one vid) followed by the Worldwound and then probably by Numeria. But isn't necromancy already its own school of magic? And out of all the spells in the necromantic school, how many actually raise undead? I'd say the majority of them instead revolve around doing horrifying things to the mortal body and soul, and like six of them actually raise the dead?

@@TheMythkeeper tried but haven't had any lasting groups for longer than 3 sessions due to time zones and scheduling as is always the bane of TTRPG groups. Pathfinder also isn't nearly as popular where I am living so in person groups aren't an option either as I have only passing familiarity with patherfiner due to WOTR. Pathfinder lore is vastly better than D&D lore by a long shot to.

Geb = Thay 😅 which is something I love. There are too many similarities Zulkirs/tharchs = blood lords are undead of some kind. Osiriani garundi/ Mulan ethnicity both are usually tall and sender build. Both have ancestral traditions shaving their heads,eyebrows and faces. Geb/Sazz Tam both unleash poisons fog/ Dream vestige or horn of beckoning Death on their own nation killing and transformed most the population into an army of undead. The vast "population" of undead zombies enthrall laborers

I always thought Geb was kind of boring. The Evil Undead nation. Whoopie. But, there’s more to it than that. The Quick-Dead Faction advocating for civil reform. The Living and Undead scholars at the Mausoleum debating necrotic theory. Even the “temporary marriages and adoptions” of Geb’s most militant city. They all show there’s more going on than just “Undead rule the Living and it sucks to live here.”

Yeah, Paizo’s really good about adding nuance to this setting. After Watching this video, I really want to play a recently turned Vampire follower of Nocticula or even Shelyn who became undead just so he could master all art forms. I really like the idea of being surrounded by all these politicians and fanatics and screaming “Leave me alone! I just want to paint!”
