We're currently playing 5e in my custom world, not PF2e or Golarion. But I did take the bit of lore that demon lords have to be killed twice within a short period of time or else they gain their Abyssal resurrection ability, and the group is currently on an excursion to kill Orcus permanently, coming off the tail of events in my world. So this is coincidental timing. I find Paizo's interpretation of demons, being personifications of sin, to be a breath of fresh air compared to D&Ds, which sort of kill and destroy just to kill and destroy. In fact I find that the fact that all of the fiendish outsiders embody a certain ideal like sin for demons or death for daemons is very useful to to quickly figure out at a glance what makes a balor demon different from a nalfashnee.

Yeah they definitely took the old staples, shuffled them up a bit, and tried to figure out a way to give the categories and individual fiend types a little more identity. I think we may see some of this pushed even further was remaster and future iterations of the game.

A tip on distinguishing Demons & Daemons in pronounciation, pronounce Daemon as you would Matt Damon or alternatively as Diamond. Most people I've heard that come across the Daemon spelling use the Matt Damon variant but both are very good to separate them from demons in speech I think.

I don’t much care for the Fiends, but I’m happy to have this and your video on Devils and Daemons since I’m already using your videos on Celestials/Empyrral Lords in one of my (many) homebrew settings as the major religious sects, and I figure it’s also good to know the bad guys. So, thank you to introducing me to some compelling villains (or beings villains can worship) There are also a couple of demon lords I like: I’ve always enjoyed the concept of the Gorilla King (and Angazhan just looks cool) and I LOVE Nocticula as the Redeemer Queen. I also have to wonder about Aldinach. Given her association with deserts and scorpions I have to imagine her cult comes into conflicts with the followers of Selket regularly.

I've been looking forward to this video and it delivered - well done again :) My favorite is still your Dark Tapestry episode because I adore unknowable Lovecraftian realms and eldritch gods, but this contends. Now here's an expansive rogue's gallery to sink one's teeth (or more likely swords and spells) into. Demons embody actual human vices cranked up to max. That means killing, outsmarting, or conspiring with them is especially compelling because they are relatable or horrifying temptations/failings from real life made manifest. This episode is rich with potential adventuring hooks and campaign-defining villains. Devils will drown you in paperwork, put you into morally difficult situations, and can be deceptively reasonable. The impression I got of daemons of Abaddon is that they are destruction incarnate and only want to obliterate everything. Contrasting that we have demons who are at least as beholden to their immediate desires as mortals and that gives them weaknesses to be exploited. Out-bargaining a devil for gain is basically impossible and likely very tedious. Conversely the potential for manipulating a short-sighted demon presents an incredibly high-risk, high-reward venture that toes the line between dumbest thing a player could do and thrilling lucrative adventure. Plus very few entities frown if you deceive a demon to your gain and it's detriment. If want a hook to toss your players into a maelstrom of intrigue, violence, or temptation and reward clever play you could do far worse than a demon's temptations or interference. Ideologically I'd probably oppose Abraxas most readily because I love knowledge but I also fervently believe widespread education and transparency are critical social ethics. On the flip side, I view secrets used to exploit and control others (e.g. buying politicians under the table, criminal syndicates bribing authorities, insider trading etc.) as causing an inordinate amount of suffering. Thus Abraxas' portfolio of hiding knowledge and making sure secrets never come to light particularly motivates me. I also had a moment of hate when you discussed Areshkagal, but that's entirely because her temple dungeon in WotR is such a pain in the ass :) Nocticula's story is nice because it's good to know that while angels may fall, demons can also ascend - a compelling theme that also came up in the WotR game actually.
@TheMythKeeper

Rock on! I always welcome your comments and what a meaty one. You've kind of hit the nail on the head here. Demons are among the most compelling of the fiends because in many ways they are the most like us. They have desires for community, for recognition, even for love on occasion, its just all wrapped up in selfishness and egotism. As I mentioned in my other video though, I have a real soft-spot for Daemons too. They're the most linearly evil in some way, the most predatory and in some ways the most dangerous. They're harder to understand than devils (who think more long term and can be bargained with - albeit at great danger) and they are much less sympathetic than demons. They're the most primitive and animalistic, and I always like the idea of a PC trying to 'do a deal' with a daemon without really understanding what they're dealing with!
@ColinGrym
@ColinGrym 10 ай бұрын
@@TheMythKeeper Thank you! You put a lot of effort into your work so I like to share some of the thoughts your episodes prompt. Before your video on daemons of Abaddon, I definitely would have been one of those people negotiating blindly. I'd still try to play a PC who is ignorant unless they had some reason to know a daemon's nature since metagaming is less fun for me than working around "mistakes". After your video though, I feel like bargaining with a daemon of war, pestilence, etc. would be akin to attempting a mutually beneficial agreement with a sentient hurricane. I think you're a better fan of daemons than I am. As I've mentioned, to me they seem simplistic and impersonal but I'm always down to learn your side of the argument. It would be interesting seeing how you'd DM a daemon to a party that didn't know better to make it more than just a combat encounter. Your upload rate is great considering the duration and effort you put into these videos, but perhaps down the road you could release your thoughts on DM'ing different monsters/villains/mindsets to be more than hostile xp reservoirs to be slain.

@@ColinGrym - I might branch out and do some videos about GMing at some point, but Pathfinder is *so dense* that I think I will have my hands full doing lore content for a good long while here (at least a year is my guess). If I do a GMing video it might be that I've finally decided to do a collab with another KZbinr or something along those lines. As for how I'd use a Daemon in a game, I'd love to do something akin to Cherubael from the Eisenhorn novels, where it essentially plays along for as long as its bound, looking for an opening to kill everything as soon as someone slips up. Basically play it like a very intelligent caged animal. I'm less interested in a Daemon as the 'big bad' to an adventure, a Devil or Demon actually works better, because of the more complicated motivations. But I like the simplicity and potential creepiness of daemons. ;-)
@ColinGrym
@ColinGrym 10 ай бұрын
@@TheMythKeeper That's fair. Even with your pace at presenting the lore I can see your plate being full for a long time. There's the existing lore, the remaster, and all the requests you're already juggling that more closely fit more the flavor of the channel. Plus if you decide to make deep dives on individuals at some later point you can always fit in how they tend to interact with others and that will basically accomplish the same thing. The Cherubael angle is interesting and that long-term relationship would perhaps fit a summoner with a rebellious-but-coerced eidolon. Potential conflicts in conversation and ideology would mean both DM and player would have to be on board, but there's definitely unique roleplay potential there. *Slight spoiler warning for the excellent Eisenhorn books* As well, I enjoyed the changing dynamics between Cherubael and Eisenhorn as Eisenhorn gains power. One of the most satisfying moments in the Eisenhorn arc is when Cherubael admits that Gregor has begun to scare him. That admission is a very impactful method of portraying how far Eisenhorn has come from a baseline human. I could easily see it being mirrored in a player summoner that gains power as they level. E.g. initially the binding ritual has to restrict the daemon heavily and limits it's power, but as the summoner becomes more adept and personally powerful they can relax the restrictions to empower their eidolon with new abilities (or can they? Hubris when dealing with a barely bound, bitter daemon? Hmmm...).
@TheMythKeeper
@TheMythKeeper 10 ай бұрын
@@ColinGrym - Haha! See you're liking this idea. Honestly playing a Summoner and working with your GM to have your Eidolon be a Daemon that you're only partially in control of is such a FANTASTIC concept. Definitely something to do next time I'm a player again. Also Daemons are capable of change (just like other post-mortal types) its just much rarer for them. One example: The Pale Horse, who is now a Psychopomp Usher, used to be a Daemon once.

Hey, my absolute favourite class of fiend! I love that you touched on how Demonkind are much more nuanced than just mindless, wanton destruction. However, I did have a question. Are we sure that Socothbenoth inherited Nocticula's domain? I recall a few sources, including Midwives of Death, Lords of Chaos, and the Midnight Isles which indicated that Shamira, the only succubus to have seduced Nocticula and thus the ruler of Alushinyrra, the capital city of the Midnight Isles, was herself a nascent Demon Lord and the most likely to replace Nocticula.
@TheMythKeeper
@TheMythKeeper 10 ай бұрын
IIRC, that info came from the Nocticula section of the new Gods & Magic book. That being said, I think he's not a direct replacement, more of a spiritual successor as he definitely has his own idiom.

Daemon is derived from the Greek Daimon (Die Mon), it transitioned through Germanic into this spelling by way of the letter Ash (æ) which is pronounced the same as the letter A in Cat. So, Dahmon roughly. Just a protip from a lay linguist ;)
@TheMythKeeper
@TheMythKeeper 6 ай бұрын
I know the root etymology. Daemon is just the older english spelling of Demon, and in UK English it is pronounced the way the US word Demon is. I'm English originally and pronouncing it any other way feels like I'm intentionally mispronouncing it. So from this video i assume Owlcat's PF:WOTR game deviates from the lore a bit? In the game, there are no toad demons but in its place there's the Abrikandalu demons which serves the same purpose of demons that defiles beauty and art. There's also 2 demon lords, Nayhindri and Sithudd, who is not mentioned here so i guess they're homebrewed?
@TheMythKeeper
@TheMythKeeper 5 ай бұрын
Great question! I should have put a disclaimer that this video is by no means totally comprehensive (although I did try my best). Sithhud is what is called a "Nascent Demon Lord" like Treerazor, and there were simply too many of them to number here. Nahyndri was a fullblown demon lord, but is dead, killed by Nocticula thousands of years ago (as described in the CRPG as well IIRC). Both are canon to Pathfinder tabletop and to the CRPG. Abrikandalu's are also in Pathfinder. In fact there are dozens of demon entries in PF1. ( www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/outsiders/demon/ - right column) So for a video like this I basically was picking my battles and trying to focus on the main ones I thought would be useful to the greatest number of GMs.

A secret about me is that I spoke Italian before I spoke English (long, long ago) so my instinct for pronouncing fantasy words is quite different from most native english-speakers. I almost always favor a short vowel (the 'a' in hat) over a long vowel (the 'a' in hate); so you might be right that the second 'a' is meant to be long, but its not my instinctual pronunciation.

What is the relationship between mastamaa and baba yaga? Isn't baba yaga considered a god as well?
@TheMythKeeper
@TheMythKeeper 4 ай бұрын
Baba Yaga isn't a god, she's just a living witch of such power she is comparable to most post-mortal beings. Like many mortals of her power level (like Old Mage Jatembe for example) she tends to view gods as equals rather than beings to be venerated. As such although there might have been a time in her existence where she considered someone like Mastamaa to be a paragon of sorts for hags and witches, she no longer feels a need to have such a patron herself.

@@TheMythKeeperthanks for answering. Kinda surprised Baba Yaga hasn't become a demigod yet. Im sure she'd get plenty of evil worshippers if she wanted to.

I'm acrually shocked with fact Nocticula acrually become a CN goddess. But who the Hell rule the Midnight Isles now?

Not clear, because Socothbenoth has his own realm already. Maybe a new deity will emerge in time and take over there.

Nock had a nascent demon lord named Shamira serving her, so maybe she stepped up and took over.

@@TheMythKeeper Absolutely, yes. Your tone is hyper consistent to the point of it being a little odd, and it sounds like every sentence is a different take. Both being significant tells of AI voice recordings. I like the content but I'm wary of AI wiki readers crowding out the lore space on youtube.

@@ShumaBot Okay, well I promise you I'm 100% a human being. The thing about every sentence sounding slightly different is probably accurate. I record in San Francisco and I don't have a studio. The streets are noisy as hell so I'm forced to stop recording and start recording constantly. Its an enormous hassle. Sometimes this means I'm clipping together different parts of sentences together to cut out the sound of a screeching car. As for the consistency of tone, that's just what I sound like I guess!

I hate how pathfinder copied the dnd. Bro, just call them fiends, spawn or something. Annoying.

It was built into the OGL. Pathfinder didn't set out to build its own RPG, it originally wanted to do a setting for D&D. Then over time it built its own identity. OGL had so much stuff built in. I think now that Pathfinder has its own following there are a lot of things the team probably wishes they had done slightly differently. I'm guessing we'll get some pretty chunky lore changes with REMASTER as we move away from OGL.

I'm guessing he doesn't know what happened? 3.5 D&D my man. I forget how long it's been. People don't even know what happened or why there's even a Pathfinder. That's what must be annoying to you. Freedom to speak your mind without an inkling of what you are saying. Just because we have freedom of speech doesn't mean you should. WoTC needs to burn down. Be on the right side.
