I love the channel, so I don't want this be taken the wrong way. I bought two of the Pathfinder Army style stainless steel canteens. I bought then about a year apart from each other.The first had the bakelite lid, and it seemed to give the water a bitter taste. I was heating water in the canteen itself and the fire damaged the canteen. I bought a second one and the Duluth carrier.The second one had the newer cap which was superior to the bakelite cap, no after taste. I learned from my first experience so I did not put the canteen into the coals. After about 6 months the canteen had rust in several spots inside it, and around the seam. I contacted the guys at the Canteen shop where I bought it, and they were great. They wanted to replace BOTH of the canteens. I declined to take them up on the offer though. I threw away the first canteen, and melted pure beeswax and coated the interior of the second canteen. I did CW reenacting and we used authentic tin canteens that would rust. The old timers used pure beeswax to seal the interior of their canteens. Don't use modern paraffin wax, it will flake off. You can't heat water in the canteen but that's what the cups are for. The strap on the Duluth carrier came apart on me so I replaced it with a piece of automobile seatbelt. I don't know how much longer the actual carrier will hold up, not so rugged for the price. All in all, I find my old 1976 Army issue canteen , cup, "stove" , and carrier my most reliable canteen kit. Best regards, MiF

I have the canteen kit and love it. It is thick stainless steel and you wont bend it without really trying. The wide mouth on the canteen was a great idea. The kit works excellently and comes with everything you need to get started boiling water or cooking. Have had no trouble at all with it.

Great review Chris and Will. I have both the water bottle set and the canteen set and they are both top quality. I got mine before they added the lid to the water bottle set so I need to get a cup lid for $8. I also bought the $6 canteen cup lid instead of the Heavy Cover. It's not quite as nice, but it gets the job done. I reviewed them both on my channel, but I don't have the really cool, jacked up tarp in the snowy background so your review is way better ;-) Now I've just GOT to have one of those Bush Pots. Thanks again. - Bryan

I own this set as well, but I prefer my Stanley SS cup, and 40oz Klean Kanteen SS bottle. The slots that Pathfinder has put in his cup lid for the fish mouth-opener is awesome. I need to cut into my Stanley cup for the same purpose!

I like the 64 oz bottle kit , rather than the canteen, or 32 oz kits . But that's me . I like the pathfinder frying pan and the 120 oz pot too . Me being disabled, cant get far from the pickup, or 4 wheelers . Me staying close to camp , I get most cooking duties, so they eat stews , meat soups , beans and bacon, cornbread, fried spuds . Once a while biscuits, I've a real Dutch oven. I've invested in my children and grandson, these pathfinder kits also, it'll last for generations

ok, now it's my turn to share: just rewatched this video & a few others about the PF/SRO's gear. yesterday i received a whole bunch of SRO gear from the PF store. prior to getting the gear other than the original canteen cup stove from the canteenshop & the PF SS lids that fit the USGI cups i had never held or owned any SRO gear or even seen any of it in person. i had to buy this gear from the INET sight unseen knowing nobody who had any of this gear. i just watched revies and then bought the gear on-line. here's my thoughts: 32oz PF SS bottle = ok & a little close to being on the flimsy side + no way as good as the nalgene SS bottle, 24oz PF SS cup & lid = ok but not THE BEST, Light My Fire spork = ok but absolutely nothing close to writing home about, PF Trail Pro Cook Set Bag = i love the design of it for use as a day pack but quality no where near that of condor or maxpedition, PF SS alcohol stove with stand = what a serious TANK with capacity beyond belief and i think looks very quality made is HEAVY is BIG + the stand is ok, PF SS Bush Pot Cook Kit with stove stand = the pot looks and feels fine but the stove stand is a bit on the flimsy side (gauge of SS used for the stand a bit too thin IMO), PF SS Bottle Stove Stand = close to being on the flimsy side, PF Fish Mouth Spreader = ok, PF mini infernos in can = ok, PF glow in the dark ferro rod & striker = ok, PF C steel & flint set = excellent works right out of the box, PF flint & steel set in bag (009FAS) = excellent works right out of the box, PF canvass needles #10 & #14 = excellent. keeping in-mind i haven't used this stuff yet or a lot yet either my out of the box and in-hand grade of it all over-all is an "A", but not an "A+". IMO i think what has been done with this gear by the makers and sellers is to provide you a just above but teetering the flimsy side quality of gear where you'll be happy but NOT BE unhappy and i think they've been successful at this. is this gear worth the money in my estimation = YES. is this gear good gear = YES. is this gear the very best = NO. are you gonna be happy with this gear = YES, but it's just barely above that fine line of NO. IMO if this gear were made just a little bit less sturdy the over-all answer to everything would be a "NO". IMO when you buy this gear you are getting what you paid for, but not anything else above what you paid for. when i buy something i am looking for it to last and do what it's supposed to and to do it well. i think this gear will do that and i think it's worth the money? however, IMO when you buy this gear you are not ROBBING THE BANK in that you are just getting what you paid for. one more thing... something IMO is very HIGH QUALITY is the canteenshop's Original Canteen Cup Stove Stand... it's probably with you for life.. thick stainless steel and made very well... extremely heavy duty. it's the JESSICA of stove stands IMO! thanks chris for all of your reviews and all of your efforts as your work and help never goes un-noticed by me! i appreciate you!

Hey Chris, great video! I'm a big fan of the Pathfinder Stainless Steel Bottle Cookset. It's a superb piece of kit! The canteen is actually 39 ounces. I came close to buying one of those instead of the water bottle set, but because the water bottle is exactly the right size for using chemical disinfectants and the cup can use the fish mouth spreader as a bail I went with the bottle kit instead. For anyone who wants to be able to carry their water on their belt the canteen is probably the way to go, but otherwise the bottle is more practical I think. Regarding the stove for the bush pot, one of the big advantages to it is that it allows you to get the pot above the coals without having to construct a tripod. Maximum heat is actually about 3" above the coals, not in the coals. Once your fire burns down a bit and you have some good hot coals you can just set the stove directly in the coals and boil water faster than you could without the stove. I do this with my water bottle stove ring most of the time. BTW, The Pathfinder Store has just recently introduced a stainless steel stove like the one that comes with the canteen set for the water bottle. It nests over the cup. I believe it was priced at $18 last time I looked. I don't have one yet, but it looks like a pretty good product.

Some advice: Since that SS Canteen has the bakelite cap, buy an ABS replacement cap from Pathfinder for it. I think it's 5 or 6 bucks. The new SS Canteens from pathfinder and canteenshop now come with the ABS lid instead of bakelite.... because if you drop that canteen when it's full of water, the bakelite lid not only can, but probably will break. File that under "ask me how I know".

You really can't go wrong with the price of the ultimate canteen survival set. The shoulder bag by itself sells for $40 at an Army Navy store and that was the cheapest! It's a great set. You get the canteen, nesting cup, stove, titanium spork ( I bought the long aluminium spoon from EMS), fish mouth spreader, 6 mini inferno discs , a kickass fero rod with a compartment with micro infernos inside plus two p38 John Wayne can openers (cgeap version). $89 its all put together for you and room to add more.

Hey Brother, great review! I just wanted to add that being 'bush stove poor' I inquired about just being able to purchase just the Bush Pot w/ lid minus the stove in order to not have duplications and waste $ and was told "No go." You can only get it all or none. I requested that maybe the ones in charge of sales practices could think about making all kit components available separately in the future. Just thought that other interest may make this viable. Take care Brothers and looking forward to more quality videos.

Hey Chris, on that stove, I've only ever seen people use it as a "stand" in a fire to support the bush pot. I am wondering if actually used as a stand alone stove if it would work, since the pot practically goes right on top of the vents/holes I would think it would smother the fire. I've made several of my own "bush stoves" and unless I put holes or vents towards the top it smothers out the fire as there is not enough draw. I have heard mixed reviews on the newer gen pathfinder stuff (caps and lids being sub par). Will should do a burn test stand alone from a fire ;)-

How does the bottle kit compare to the canteen kit, and which one do you like more?
@betweenfiveandseven10 жыл бұрын
Nathan Healy I own and like both. The canteen is 39 1/2 oz container... the bottle is 32 oz. 32 oz makes sense for purifying tablets - the canteen makes sense for carrying more water so you have about enough for a freeze dried meal plus a decent sized cup of coffee. I carry my bottle in my day bag and my canteen in my woods bag. People look at me funny when I break out a GI style canteen at work or in town where something bottle shaped is just 'normal' and they don't even notice. The stove is way better built for the canteen. The bottle stove is pretty thin material... but it does work fine. The new bottle cup with the bail hangar holes built in is pretty cool. The bail holes make it easy but do reduce the amount the cup can hold by an ounce or so because water leaks out those holes (not really an issue unless needing an exact measurement of a full cup) The graduation marks on the canteen cup start at 400ml (also has ounces starting at 16) so a few drops more than the lowest mark is 14 oz which is what the mountain house pro-pack single serving meals require. The graduation marks on the bottle cup start at 16 oz and 500 ml so more guess work is required for Mountain House pro-packs. Both do the job and both are really nice. The cool factor certainly goes to the canteen. The grey-man factor absolutely goes to the bottle.
@muleyscousin62588 жыл бұрын
IF you had to choose between the canteen at 39 1/2 oz container... or the bottle kit at 32 oz ... which one would you choose, if you could only get one ? Which one would you want on a long hike ? Would the usefulness of one, over the other. make a difference, considering the overall weight of the kits?

The prices have changed and, best is, they no longer use the Condor bottle bag but a proprietary, Pathfinder bottle bag. Larger and more storage. And there is too much "hate" and negative stuff here... and everywhere. If you have a differing view or counter point that's one thing but if you don't like a video or product, don't watch or buy it and move on, people. Too many feed their own ego by knocking vids/products just for the sake of it. That's just my way of sticking up for Chris, his channel and vids. I don't agree with everything but if I don't have something valid as a counter, I keep my mouth shut. Usually. ;)

What you have to bear in mind that this canteen set will set you back $60 (£38) and that does not include the lid, then you have to take into account shipping cost, customs import duty ( because it is more than £15) also they will not state that it is a gift, to avoid duty, In my opinion this is not worth the money or trouble. and it is made in China, as is a lot of s/steel products now, for anyone wanting to get one, you need to wait until they have a distributor in the UK, then it will come down in price, I put this comment down, because I don't think it is right that people give it the thumbs down instead of a comment.

A far cheaper way is to go with the Stanley cook pot, Tatonka mug (or the GSI one) and get a sheet of 6mm mesh from the DIY store to fashion your own stand/stove. 5 mins with a dremmel tool gives you some options for wire hook/bale or crocodile clip attachment also. Alternatively some cycle brake cable and chocky block electrical connectors form the hanging bale. For the actual container the Nalgene Backpacker is the most expensive piece at about 23 quid. I'm currently assembling my cookset, got the Condor pouch, the Stanley pot a meths burner and a small Lixada wood burner. Next purchase will be the Nalgene backpacker and mug.
