Geez, can you imagine? This was their first professional appearance -- on the _Perry Como_ show, no less!! Obviously, as they were walking upstage, they were afraid, but you could _see_ in poor Prudence's face that she was absolutely mortified. My God, it must have been like being led up to the gallows! They did a fine job, though. So happy that their TV debut was a success! Perry also did a nice job, so comforting and sensitive to their terror. He took his time with them, despite his stage director's pushing. Kudos to Mr. C. I remember when this song first came out on the radio. I loved it. I was 6.

+Astrobran2 So do I. I was 6 and my sister 5. We had the 45 rpm record and absolutely loved this song and its flip side, "A Smile Is Something Special (A Ribbon Is Something Rare) and as our sopranos matched those of Prudence & Patience, would at family parties sing both songs in duet. Only recently did I glean the possible one-night-stand meaning of "I know with the dawn / That you will be gone / But tonight you belong to me," which yet could just mean (as we vaguely assumed it did; we were just entranced with the pretty imagery and sonorous melody and rhymes) that a husband is going off for a while, as to military service. I agree, "Mister C" was a kind man and host, doubtless put his hands on their shoulders just to steady their nerves.

Actually, it's more of a "whoever you're with now, I can still dream about you" sort of thing. The title suggests a one night affair, but the lyrics make it clear that "tonight you belong to me" because hey, I can dream about anything. The double endendre title is probably deliberate, going back to the 1920s when it was written.

But now (and probably when this was recorded) there is a law that says that a certain percentage of a child actor's earnings must be put in a secure bank account that can only be accessed by the child once they turn eighteen, or by the parents with the child's permission (the child must be eighteen when s/he gives his/her parents access to the account).

What impressed me about Patience & Prudence was their willingness in later interviews to confess that they were "put up" to doing this song by "Daddy the Bandleader," (renowned orchesta leader Mack McIntyre) and that neither of them had a stitch of musical prowess. While that lack of confidence and musical ability shows in this live performance, they did a commendable job, and that's all that counts. Their following attempts at hit singles faded fast, and they instantly disappeared from the music world. It appears to me they never wanted it to begin with. Why do some parents dig for gold, using their children as shovels?

This is quite charming. I used to dislike this song, but strangely enough, what turned me on to this version was a brilliant film editor. There was a TV documentary about the appalling suffering of GIs during the Pacific War and the soundtrack used was this song. It should not have worked, but the effect was so poignant and chilling that I had to identify the song (which I had heard as a kid). I am glad to hear that the girls grew up to be young women relatively unscathed by their unwanted ten minutes of fame. It may be a fluke, but this version of the song still has a timeless charm about it.

I share your appreciation of this song. It may be not about infidelity, but about a husband leaving for a while as for military service, likely why the documentarian deployed it. The girls' soprano voices are enchantingly right for the song's melody and romantic stream and moonlight imagery, and their childish innocent, "choir girl" voices a counterpoint foil to the grim theme of the documentary.

You wanna know what's creepier? If this airdate is correct, P&P performed on Perry Como on 9/15/1956 and Prudence (girl on the left) passed away on 9/15/2023-- exactly 67 years apart.

It's old, but in the grand scheme of time and that the 50's to the year we're in now is just a blip, a tiny fraction of time that had passed 😮

According to a person in the comments here, Patience lives in Georgia and doesn't really leave her house and is apparently viewed as "that weird old lady" by the kids in the neighbourhood and Prudence lives in California. Prudence ended up becoming an alcoholic and her daughter Paige died in July 2020. Paige was homeless and often stayed with her grandma Audrey until Audrey died.

They're both still alive. Patience lives in Georgia and Prudence lives in California. Tragically Prudence became a drug addict and a severe alcoholic and her daughter, Paige Conca was homeless and died in 2020 💔

@@AceStar1994 Oh, I thought they moved to Wisconsin? I saw them once give a brief interview when they were older and they seemed like well adjusted middled aged women.

@@nancydavis_ Sorry for the late reply, I don't get notified when somebody replies. Yeah, I thought they both lived in Wisconsin too because that's what it says on Wikipedia. I just done a search for their names and a Whitepages result come up for Patience.

It isn't creepy at all, this kind of music gives off the exact opposite vibe, that's WHY it's used in horror movies. The dissonance between the sweet/dreamy/fun music with creepy/weird/scary imagery is an effective method of making a scene feel unsettling.

Looks like their experience was mainly in the studio. Live performing was new for them. Their syllable-on-syllable articulation is perfect, and in concentrating on that, they don't manage to smile much. As a kid, I devoured their hit 45RPM (Money Tree and Gonna Get Along Withoutcha Now). When I became an oldies junkie, I was thrilled to learn of the hit they perform here.

meloyelloduck said "They were lip-syncing, this is exactly as they sound on the studio recorded song!" I don't agree. You can hear the tremulous quaver in Prudence's voice, not discernible in the recording. However, the backing, including their own vocal harmonies, does seem to be from the original recording.
@janaeevano10 жыл бұрын
Back then this was live there was no absolute way that this could've been lip synced because that technology was not that advanced in the 1940s get your knowledge straight please I'm 12 and I know more than you I believe that I hate stated my point I will stop now, if you really don't care you wouldn't reply to this. Thank youuuu.

Actually, their mother provided an extra voice through an offstage mic to beef up the girls' voices when they sang live. If you listen closely you can hear her on this.
