It's a simple loading mechanism, doesn't require that much moving parts compared to if it was direct blowback, in fact if you think about it most auto loading tank turrets are actually just huge revolvers with more chambers for each round usually surrounding the turret which is why when you see a tank with an auto loader get destroyed the turret flies up in the air because the munition around it blows up as well. Inconvenient for when it gets hit but it's a very easy mechanism to mass produce which is why Russia has a lot of t-90 tanks.

@lemonycactus8687 "Smython" is the term I think they use. Colt Python barrel on a 19's frame. Popular in police shooting competitions. Colt made a better barrel, but S&W had the far superior internals for double-action shooting. Plus, the wood grips are more in line with the factory Smith's than what you got from first-generation Pythons.

To sum up the reason why Giant Robots have this reloading technique in Patlabor. The Ingram Series are Police-Use Machines, they aren't designed with the intent and mind of actually firing their gun unless absolutely necessary, even then, the Ingram Series aren't made for fighting against Human Criminals, that's normal polices job (Though there are times where that does happen anyways), they're made with the intent of combating rogue labors hand-to-hand to prevent environmental or building damage, mainly construction Mechs that got cockpit snatched by a angry guy. Firing these guns can lead to incidental environmental damage to buildings, things that the Ingram Series were actively made to prevent and its successor, the Peacekeeper was actively made to do better. In the case that the Ingram did run out of ammo where it was in the absolute necessary, the Ingram would quite literally throw the Revolver to standby Operatives on the Ground that would handle the reloading instead of the Pilot doing that job.

In real life in Japan, regular police officers still use revolvers. Furthermore, one of the loaded balls is a blank for intimidation. The reason for this is to avoid putting too much force in the hands of one individual, the police officer, and because there are very few situations in Japan in which a gun is required. In this context, you can understand why the robot is equipped with a revolver instead of an automatic handgun, and why the robot's arm cannot be used to load bullets. The inconvenient specifications of the robot are an obstacle to prevent the police, a public authority, from going out of control. It may be difficult for non-Japanese to understand this particular situation, but knowing this context will enhance your enjoyment of the PATLABOR anime.

To sum up the explanations; it’s a police robot designed specifically to subdue lone unarmed construction bots piloted by disgruntled workers/drunk students/etc. via smacking them with an EMP stick or wrestling them into submission, with the revolver reload being deliberately inefficient for basically political reasons, since it’s only meant to be used in the rare occasions you need to actually shoot a construction bot from range. Even in-universe they’re shown to be completely useless (or at least woefully outmatched) against anything with actual armor/guns (like a Soviet spider tank from the TV show). Also, for what it’s worth, the original manga/TV show was an action comedy, with the movies (where this clip is from) being more of a dark and gritty take. tl;dr: This is a mecha intentionally designed to fight only Killdozers and nothing else.

IIRC, most of the time PATLABOR ends up using their batons instead of their revolver cannons. There's even a great scene where it's demonstrated that a good PATLABOR pilot can do judo throws and locks using the Ingram. And when most of what you end up dealing with are guys driving glorified forklifts, that's enough. Too bad the PATLABOR team is in a mecha series, which means that they WILL end up going up against berserk military mechs. . .

Patlabor, the special vehicle units serving as police forces in urban areas, avoids employing heavy weaponry to minimize civilian casualties. The TV series even depicts them being charged for damaging civilian vehicles during operations and attempting to get their insurance to cover the repair costs. But you can still see some heavy weaponry design like Helldiver (official military labor, piloted by Tamaki Fuwa, a friend of Shinobu.)

it makes some sense, they are designed for policing action instead of military force. If you think about it, when operating in a policing duty, you would try to de-escalate most situations and if all avenues of non destructive force are exhausted, then deadly force would be used, and most the labor they go up against are civilian vehicles it would make sense that you would only need 1 or 2 of those massive cannon rounds at most. Also, they operate in pairs and have a support team near by anyways. This is a extreme circumstance that they find themselves in.

People thought this manual loading is funny.. but remember Headgear is comprised of the best mecha minds of the 80s and 90s… these creative titans have build worlds, written stories, designed mechanics, imagined futures that still influence us today.. they designed the gun loading mechanism that way on purpose.. Although the world was taken place in (then) future, with giant robots roaming around like trucks, but the story is still fundamentally about regular Japanese cops and people around them.. the weaponry equipped in Japanese police forces are never powerful nor advanced, because the society never demanded that.. remember Japanese cops were still chasing people on foot or bicycle not so long ago.. that fact was just as ridiculous, but was just what the society needed If manual loading was funny, the show even went further and have the cops write reports on shooting even one bullet at all.. or need to cut down on usage because of the budget cuts these cumbersome weapons are tools to tell stories of bureaucracy, to highten tensions, to differentiate cops from military, to define weaponry generation and evolution, and most of all, to tell great stories

It's a mech. The index finger has more moving parts than a heavy machine gun. It's not a reliability thing. Also, modern semiautos are as reliable if not MORE reliable than a revolver. Anime logic: Design a mech suit with expensive, complex, humanlike hands, only to use those hands to grip a comically oversized revolver. In real life, it would have no arms, and there would be weapons mounted directly where the "shoulders" mount. Pretty much like a combat helicopter cockpit with legs. I think Tank Police had a more believable premise, but Patlabor gets extra points for cool factor.

I don't necessarily have a problem with it not having any realistic plan for reloading in a fight. These are meant for civilian environments, so they aren't focused on ranged combat (Since you don't want your cops blasting these tank shells around). Still, if you are going to all that effort... just give them two guns. Double your loaded ammo capacity. IT is the classic pirate technique.

The idea of standardized manual reloading is an insult to the mech genre, technology, and human progress in general. God forbid they put an ammo belt on it or pouches/mounted mags for "pop out" ammo so the mech itself can reload.
@StrikeNoir105E
@StrikeNoir105E 5 ай бұрын
@@BlueTeam-John-Fred-Linda-Kelly I mean, in California people are bringing back ancient reloading and firing techniques like crank handles just to be able to shoot weapons in "law-compliant" ways. If a place's laws are inane enough, they can stall and prevent technological implementation, and in the case of the Japanese Police they still use revolvers to this day due to their own police gun culture and laws to ensure police officers aren't armed to the teeth. Not having autoloaders of any kind on a police mech makes sense in such context.

@@BlueTeam-John-Fred-Linda-Kelly The reason why Patlabor is like this, is because its a satirical more realistic take on the Mecha Genre as a whole set in the late 90s to early 2000s, of course, it can be a bit inconsistent, but Patlabor is as realistic as you'll get with the Mecha Genre. And also just to clarify this like the 100th time, this Mech is designed with the intent of hand-to-hand combat against other Mechs, mostly bipedal forklifters to prevent mitigate as much urban destruction. Any misdirected use with a 39mm Revolver Cannon can literally result in building getting destroyed and that'll result in the Special Vehicles Division having to go to the insurance company. This isn't like Gundam or let alone Mechwarrior where a 100 Ton Mech can fly up to 200 feet up in the air and suffer just a little bit of repercussions when it comes crashing down to the ground. The ARL-99 Helldivers in this series are quite notable for having their legs break when they launch from planes high up in the air even though they're using a parachute system, even then, the ARL-99 Helldivers are laughably bad in the series for being very maintenance heavy. Mechs that appear in the Late Patlabor after the Ingrams have been retired do end up using magazine-based Pistols, though its generally unknown how efficient those guns are and whether or not that those Mechs throw their Pistols to support team to reload for them.
