Patrice O’Neal in studio, featuring a phoner from Dane Cook. Dane and Patrice were good friends who came up together in the Boston comedy scene. When Patrice passed away, Dane paid homage and acknowledged the impact Patrice had on his life and in comedy where he was quoted saying, “When you talk about somebody who is in that Pryor-esque place where you connect across any audience, Patrice had a blunt force trauma about him, where he was so hilarious but at the same time so painfully truthful. Not only did Patrice bring incredible laughs to people, but he had insight. There are moments that I had sitting with him at the back of the old Nick’s Comedy Stop in Boston, that I felt like direction-altering moments with him.” While Patrice was alive, he was one of the only comedians who openly defended Dane at the height of his fame and success.
In this hilarious 2006 interview, Dane calls into the show and they immediately pick up where they left off exchanging jokes about each other’s careers, appearances, subject matter and much more. After catching up with each other, Dane promotes the movie "Employee of the Month" and addresses reports that he’s been canoodling with Jessica Simpson. He also gives the backstory of his success with Myspace, while Patrice gives him credit for changing the game by becoming famous through the use of social media without having to rely on Hollywood.
Patrice breaks down positivity and negativity and why positive thinking only works for Dane as opposed to other comedians because Dane does it righteously, which leads into the funny analysis of Bobby Kelly and Gary Gulman who he says need to be on the dark side of the force to be successful. This is the same reason Patrice felt he could never be successful with that approach because pain is the basis for his style of comedy.
Dane also talks about what it was like working with Jessica Alba, and they briefly mention Bill Burr and how he’s doing after the Philly incident. Lastly, they discuss how compromising your integrity in the short-term to ultimately gain fame in the long run isn't always beneficial for your career as Dane explains why he decided not to appear in the movie “Transformers” after Michael Bay changed his scene, which Patrice says he should have done with his role as “Hector” in the movie “In The Cut.”

Poor Patrice. One of the GOATs of his era had to literally watch Dane Cook blow up and obtain Fuck You $, then have to watch the same exact thing happen with Kevin Hart right in front of him and he was funnier then both of them combined.

I saw Jessica Alba at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told her how cool it was to meet her in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother her and ask her for photos or anything. She said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but she kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing her hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard her chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw her trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in her hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Ms. Alba, you need to pay for those first.” At first she kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, Alba stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, she kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

This is brilliant.. Talking about the table like this that is literally a table of generational influence with some of the biggest comedians today coming from that table The table was patrices and helped comedians find a voice and build confidence and him defending that means of creating comedy over the kindness and naturing Cook may have wanted whilst sitting at the table is clearly accurate now as we know the people from the table are dominating the industry

Herv3 "may have"? That's sounds like a weird reason to hate someone. Sounds like jealousy to me. Louis CK said he didn't steal from him. It seems that if a comic gets too big too fast, all of the sudden they get accused of stealing jokes. Comedians are notoriously super petty. Then those fan bases strike and boom, true or not, joke stealing spreads throughout the internet. It's weird.

I've heard that about comics many times, that they're really petty, exclusive and harsh towards others coming up thru the ranks. I've also heard Joe Rogan say comedians are different nowadays and are very supportive towards each other because there's enough to go around if you are good and willing to work hard. Which brings me to Brendan Schaub and The Hodge Twins. They'ye funny guys, yes. But I don't know if they're comedian funny. Haven't watched their stand-up. I know they sell out shows though. I don't have a problem with that. I'm glad for them all. But I'm willing to bet there's some comedians out there who are jealous of their success. But I don't know if we don't hear anything negative about them from comics because the environment is supportive now, or because Brendan's a former pro-fighter and The Twins are just nuts... and huge.

While I respect guys like Patrice, Burr, & Kelly who defended Dane because they all came up together in Boston when they were nobodies , there’s been numerous stories of Dane being an asshole when he was in the midst of his superstardom. He’d regularly bump comics at clubs, got into an argument with Steve Byrne and accused him of stealing his “essence”, tried to get Dom Irrera banned from the Laugh Factory for telling him to cool down & be nicer to people, etc. He apparently went on a major power trip during the height of his fame. So whether you liked his comedy or not, he apparently was a real asshole to other comedians. And comedians rightfully let it be known their dislike of him.

Patrice called him out immediately for trying to label him the angry black guy. “We used to hate the world together. Now you’re smoking love joints with everybody.” Patrice kept it all the way real. Left no room for you to introduce phoniness.

Vicious Circle was crazy popular, but his next 1, "Rough Around the Edges" was even better...always loved Dane Cook...I randomly watched a comedy central stand up & it was a weird white guy in a black tank top & listened ever since

Veto Bandito uhhh not really. Patrice has put out much better material than Dane ever has or probably ever will. Fuck off with your negativity when you know you're wrong. Just because Dane was more popular doesn't make him better.

If HBO was to put a big comedy show together I can guarantee you that Dane Cook would be the headliner. Over Bill Bur and over Bo and Patrice. Why? Because he gets the crowd going and he's fucking funny. It's hilarious how all these comedic half wits try to say he isn't funny or stupid or whatever and yet... His shows were / are still packed.
