At first I was like, "this is another wannabe coach who's posting NBA clips trying to explain things that common basketball fans already know" . But you did very well in explaining this Coach Mike. Surprised me a lot. The production is sub par, but can't judge a book by its cover. Good job!

I just found your series as I started playing basketball aigan after 4 years of not playing. I got blown by a gaurd several times in a game where before that never happened. As I see your video I notice how I tried to stop the gaurd with the always taught defensive stance. I believe this stance is perfect for when the opponent is going sideways but I'm too slow to react when the opponent is explosive in this stance. It occured to me that in the years before this not happened. It's not because of the quickness that I lack, I'm 23 years old... I didn't have the proper stance to react to this. I think I always played the "lockdown" defensive stance without knowing it. I'll try it next practice! Thanks, its shamefully hard to find good defensive nba video's... Everyone wants to be the bad guy who makes the crazy shots... It looks like everyone is focused on scoring nowadays!

+Coach Mike I would like to say that my defense this past week sure did improve! In practice I was able to put a lot of pressure on the PG and this afternoon the game that I had I could take away almost all drives or steer them to the basket where I would get helpside! unfortunately we lost but I could gaurd the "best" man on their team and pressure him a lot! Certainly a lot of improvement for me left but I really enjoyed kind of dominating the defense aigan!

You can see a lot of similarities between Beverley's def with Kobe's and MJ's. It wouldn't be far fetched to assume that he spent time studying the two greats. But with that said, he's still not Kobe. Kobe would not have overrun that stop at 3:17. No way no how. That's what makes Kobe's def such a god damned pleasure to watch. He's guaranteed to be stuck to you, no questions asked, and he's lightning quick, almost like he can read his oppponents' minds. Maybe he could. There's a reason he's called the Black Mamba.

at the rec i strip aloottt of people even people who are typically oohing and ahhing with their moves because i am quick on my feet with a very low stance with my back parallel to the ground, just like the video shows. I did this all completely by accident just because i felt more comfortable this way. Also, when poking a ball loose, don't just inadvertently do it, you need to have pretty damn good predicting skills when it comes to on ball defense, don't just aimlessly reach, you'll get shut down by a player if he is capable of dribbling the ball well, and if in-game, will probably foul out with all the reach in fouls, be smart about being "pick pocketer"

Add transference of power in the footwork. The bouncing motion allows for efficient and explosive first step, especially in the sideways motion. Mastery of this step in the forward, side and backwards motion. Loading power in the gravity or floating motion, jolting the downward force and directing the explosive first step is something that is rarely taught.

How would you best break it down to teach or practic

@@LockdownDefense Pushing against a wall. Front leg against the wall, rear leg straight and extended. This forms a triangle with the floor. The further the distance between wall and rear leg the greater the power. Power is released by removing front foot and dropping onto a firm rear leg Another way to drill the footwork is to push a heavy ball(20kg) around the floor with feet. One foot rear, other foot on the top of the ball using heel to shift the ball forward. Incredibly efficient and powerful move as it literally is instant power and costs gravity. The step is invisible and can juke offense and defense alike. It can be applied to other moves like jabstep, push against the wall, pull the chair, etc. Extra power is gained by hopping up and dropping onto the rear leg Adding more power by pushing off. Doing it without the wall, is the speed. This step mechanic can be done and should be practiced forwards, backwards and sideways. Fake steps can be added by stepping back with the rear leg to juke a rear step, but it increases the power of the forward intended motion by increasing distance between Offensive players only can move forwards usually. Soccer defenders keep with the opponents fastest forwards stepping backwards. Putting the wall in different positions ie Side, rear, front. Doing this without wall is instant speed Doing this with to a person on a drive is to punch a hole Doing this to a static person is to push against the wall. To apply with ball or without ball. Origin of this footwork is from squash and soccer.
@pinkseid
@pinkseid 5 жыл бұрын
3:12 - 3:33 , you can see the triangle shape of his feet and the wall which is more less his spine, with the low stance and trailing leg at full extension, in this case the left leg is the extend rear leg and the right leg is lifted. At 3:33, the right leg is fully extended to bounce his momentum back to the left, the left leg is lifted. The low stance is to ensure greatest distance between "rear leg and the wall" Most of the acceleraration is from gravity. The same step is used by "curry?" to stop and step back at 3:16
@pinkseid
@pinkseid 5 жыл бұрын
@@LockdownDefense The fake/juke variant of this step. Is on the principle. To go left,you step out to the right. To go forwards, you step out to the rear. To go backwards you step out to the front. Stepping away creates false intent. Widen the gap between spine and point of contact on floor. It also drops your loaded gravity energy and centre of mass to go in intended direction. Gravity, the distance between spine the extended leg on contact with the floor is transference or the triangle step.
@pinkseid
@pinkseid 5 жыл бұрын
The fake fake variant is for example. When you step out, both legs are extended and firm. Lifting the weight off one foot completes the triangle step. Stepping wide with the right foot, lifting right foot to jolt onto left foot. Fake right, Hesitate, Go right.

You guys have to understand Patrick is also an elite athlete, he can get away with this, 99.9% of us can’t, as a person who’s job in Hs was to guard the best player I can tell you that this doesn’t work for everyone. Patrick can reach and still move his feet. 99.9% of us reach and stop our feet. This stance works for him but it’s a gamble. He has the speed to recover. Trying this without the steal will lead to the offensive player blowing by you.

not sure if i agree with your point that everybody should defend like that. you mentioned the advantages but, the constant movement will cost you a lot of energy which you will lack on offense. also if you are not as quick as berverly the wide footing might lead to your opponent blowing by. all in all i would say that for elite defenders this might be the way to go, but for average and bad ones classic D is better because maybe you may not make an impact at that end of the floor but you wont screw up badly either.

Wow this is crazy. I got up in the middle of the night and decided to scroll down facebook to see this article. Patrick Beverley, my "Highschool Bully" I just wrote a status on fb a couple of years ago saying that i cant wait to run into my "Highschool Bully". Patrick Beverley maybe a good basketball player but he has no sense of character. We both attended Waubonsie Valley Highschool. He bullied/harrassed me to the point i had to leave every class five mins early. And that was set up by the school. Even at school parties. My mom had to pick me up early because of him. There were countless times i wanted to end my life because of the bullying.I have read countless stories about kids/teens. Committing suicide due to peer bullying. I remember asking myself what have i done to deserve this? What did i do to him? Why is he being soo mean? To this day i still dont know the reasons behind his actions. Several comments were made about my sexuality. Which was already tough to deal with in HS. Now I have a step-son that gets bullied at school. And schools need to take more action when it comes to bullying. I was a nice girl that never said anything back all i did was cry and he preyed upon that for most of my Highschool yrs and I WILL GET JUSTICE! No child should have to go through that. Thank god i had strict parents that actually paid attention!
