It was a hell of a lot more competitive that's for sure. The Bad Boys ushered in the defensive era and throughout the 90's defense is what won games. In the mid-90's games were low scoring and some were boring, especially the '94 finals when the average scores were Houston 86.1 and New York 86.9. That finals was painful to watch. Thank goodness for OJ Simpson in the Ford Bronco to distract me from the game 5 snooze fest. The Cleveland Cavs made it to the playoffs one season holding the ball for 20 seconds per possession averaging 87 points per game. The NBA was losing fans and money, so to produce more offense, for two seasons the NBA moved the three point line up, eliminated hand checking from the end line to the opposite foul line, and stopped players from using their forearms to stop an offensive player that is facing the basket. There were also a number of rules that made hard fouls easy to get away with. Not all of the games were boring but if one is honest they would tell you that the 90's was good, it was tougher and much more competitive, but some of those games were difficult to watch. If it weren't true the NBA wouldn't have lost revenue and they wouldn't have tinkered with the rules.

He could be the most underrated big man in NBA history, to be honest. He wasn't especially athletic but he made up for that with impressive length, skill and toughness. In fact I feel he was probably the second most skilled offensive big in the league after Hakeem - Robinson IMHO was less skilled than Ewing but often got the edge due to his superior strength and athleticism. It's unfortunate that Ewing lives in the shadows of Robinson and Hakeem - two of the greatest centers ever to play the game.

Ishmael Darjean Back even before then, in the late 60’s into the 70’s there were some incredible wars at center. I remember the Knicks series with the Bullets, when Willis Reed would score 32 and have 32 rebounds. Then the next night Wes Unseld would have like the same exact stats against Reed. I believe Reed was 6’ 10” and Unseld was shorter than Reed. But even then they took shots from outside as well. I’m somewhat surprised no one really mentions Willis Reed. He was a very good center and played against guys like, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russel, Lew Alcindor, who became Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and was holding his own against them.

@@MW_3 If you're talking about pure talent than you may be able to put him right behind Wilt, Kareem and Olajuwon but if you factor in accomplishments/stats he barely makes into the top 10. Probably right behind David Robinson just b/c Robinson was slightly more dominant in my opinion.

I was born in 98 but man this basketball is the best skill competition, heart man not the three point contest we have now I love the mid range post up when guys were really going at each others necks to win. Back then it’s just different this makes me miss the 2000s and trickles into the 90s I wish I was born eariler to see this live

I hear ya, a very real feeling. This was my era, awesome and all but how amazing it would have been to see it from say Jerry West’s pov and he’s still around from when he got drafted in 1961 and he’s seen *them all* played with Wilt and Elgin, got the logo, paired Shaq with Kobe, etc. Some of the things that make the game as great as it was/is is in the history books (this student writes this comment to you buried deep in Jerry West’s basketball reference page). Something tells me you’d love that era as well as many of us “youngins” do

Patrick's offense took off at Georgetown when he was paired with Graham in the post. Graham was a defensive force and a rebounding machine. It relieved Patrick of having to do double duty. Congratulations to Mr. Ewing on coaching GT to the Big East Tournament championship. Who remembers when Duke students insulted Mr. Ewing? Success is the best revenge - Vanessa Williams.

Ewing was a great center. I like to see this game (again) bc its a good example of how raw Shaq was early on in his career (and I love Shaq, but his game was really his size) as opposed to how polished Ewing was as a vet. Ewing had off nights and was on the recieving end of some imfamously embarrassing things (bad guarantees, missed finger roll and stuffing himself), but should be commended for developing his game into what we see here. Ewing was drafted for his defensive ability. The jump shot, back to the basket on the sides in particular-he developed that over his career. Ewing needed another "A" type player on the offensive end. Those 90's Knicls teams were great to watch bc they overachieved. Starks and Mason were undrafted, Oakley (my fav player on those teams) couldnt score, and Harper, Davis, Smith, McDaniel, Jackson, on and on...lots of really good players, but none on the level of Ewing, and Ewing needed that. Awesome sports story, those Pat Riley/Ewing Knicks.
