While watching this series, I came up with the theory that Patrick Jane and Red John were the same person the whole time. Perhaps this killer was a second personality of Patrick. like doppio and diavolo. Or maybe Patrick Jane is a cold-blooded killer, and let's face it, that would be the perfect disguise. no one would suspect that one of the killer's victims is the killer himself. Patrick Jane is smart enough to plan something like this if he were the killer. If this theory were really true, a perfect ending for this series would be Patrick Jane committing, you know. Patrick James made it clear from the beginning of the series that he would end up with Red John. he would still keep his promise until the end. It would be a sad, melancholy, unexpected and surprising ending, perfect.
