In terms of use of powers he's closer to the Rat King of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but character-wise he brings the Mad Hatter to mind. Except he uses more realistic emotional manipulation tactics instead of brainwashing, perhaps making him a bit more grounded that way. For a sci-fi show Batman Beyond had a lot of those types of characters.

he'd be sympathetic if he was actually a good person, but he isn't. he jsut uses his poor circumstances to justify how cruel, selfish, entitled and possessive he is. the comic story even adds to this, as he is shown he HAS the means and ability to fix his situation but he just genuinely likes his situation and ultimately jsut wants people to be his alone and his forever.

I remeber being a 'nice guy' when i was 11. I then examined myself, my actions and how it affected the people around me. So during summer break I put myself through some life experiences with my dad and the world to grow up. Decided being 'nice' was stupid. I would just be me while trying to be kind day to day.

Honestly there’s nothing wrong with being nice, it’s only a problem when you act too nice to the point that people will take advantage over that aspect of your personality. The best approach for me is being nice, but also establishing boundaries for others and limits to how nice you would be towards certain people that cross the boundaries you established to yourself.

I know some fans don't like Dana that much because of how she nags at Terry, but I honestly end up feeling sorry for her. In her mind, her boyfriend's suddenly become extremely distant and having to constantly abandon her, while always making excuses as to why. I wouldn't blame anyone for being hurt by that, especially if they're clearly being lied to (I obviously understand Terry has the pressure on from Bruce to tell no one his secret, but that doesn't change Dana's perspective). I can see why she might turn to someone else for comfort (not in a romantic sense, as that'd be cheating), but in this case she unfortunately turned to the wrong person.

Bruce Timm and co. would agree with you. They liked the character of Dana and felt that considering what Terry put her through, she was a down-right saint and felt bad that she came across as a nagging girlfriend.

It's a tragedy they never got to develop Dana's story to the point she _learns_ of Terry's secret, and we get to see their relationship develop as she comes to understand her boyfriend's predicament and all the good he's able to accomplish as the new Batman. I could imagine Dana becoming a Mary Jane Watson type of girlfriend to Terry, supporting and motivating him to keep going despite all the stresses and struggles he faces on a daily basis.

Indeed. In defense of Dana, she is unaware from the secret job of Terry, making Dana think that her boyfriend is scorning her. Meaning that Dana is actually a good girlfriend, that sadly cannot understand the behavior of her boyfriend, leaving her frustrated, making me even feels a lot pity by her. Though that as examples of true nagging girlfriends, we could mentions Julie Yamamoto of Ben 10 and Amber of Invincible. In the case of Julie, despite to be aware that Ben has an important duty as hero and Plumber, she was always complaining by the fact that he cared more saves the world from the destruction, than simply assist to a date. While in the case of Amber, when Mark revealed his identity, she admited already knew it, but Amber still was scolding Mark for be caring more be a hero, than be with her, despite to that Invincible was trying to be protecting the people, especially with the recent demise of the Guardians of Globe. Making that Julie and Amber be truly awful girlfriends.

And at least in my family, when you call someone a pack rat, it means that their a horder. both of which seemed fitting for him. I think what makes Patrick a good and at the same time a terrifying villain is that he is the closest thing for a Batman cartoon (at least at the time.) where the villain is essentially a serial killer. Yes there are some sympathies to find for Patrick mainly his past and his deformed appearance but kidnapping girls from their family and friends to the point of feeding them to his rats if the girls had refused his offers or their own wishes to leave is just evil. Now this may be controversial but I really prefer Dana as the love interest to Terry rather then Melanie Walker and Max I know so many fans prefer either one them as better love interests for Terry but I always viewed Melaine as Terry’s Catwoman/Talia Al Ghul someone who he has feelings but simply can’t to their different paths. Yes it would be cool to have a dynamic between a girl from the wealthy and someone from a middle-class family to have a relationship then again we see that with Bruce and Selina. Plus Dana comes from an affluent family herself although that doesn’t say much since it is likey a lot of students are from affluent families. At least in Terry's case his dad was an employee to one of the biggest corporations in Neo Gotham so imagined Warren must have both been very important to the company and getting bigger paychecks plus in-universe he has been dating Dana since they were both fourteen. As for Max I always see her as Terry’s Oracle then a love interest even if she is really both cool and has badass moments throughout the series. If anything this episode really shows Dana's vulnerable side Hell you could even tell that in the end of the episode that she clearly has PTSD. She does have a badass moment for herself as she uses fire and hockey stick to fight against the rats and saves Batman unknowingly saving her boyfriend. I do wish there were more Dana centric episodes like this. Yes she does nagged and was kinda a jerk towards him throughout the series but we need to remember that it would make sense she logically get more annoyed and irritated with Terry’s frequent disappearances obviously she doesn’t know that her boyfriend is batman but let not forget that Veronica Vreeland from BTAS also does the same thing to Bruce Hell she even throw a drink on to him one time yet no one hates for that granted in bruce case he is a playboy so it make sense that there aren’t any hate towards veronica beside maybe her treatment of the penguin. (although to be fair she is a product of her environment having been born to a rich family so you can’t blame for her attitude as she is essentially Gotham’s Paris Hilton.) In many ways Dana is the ‘’Betty’’ to Terry’s ‘’Archive’’ because like i said she’s his childhood friend or in terms of Marvel comics which were used as major influences for Batman Beyond (mainly Spider-Man comics.) then she is the mary jane watson or gwen stacy (albeit the latter doesn;t die but almost in return of the joker.) to Terry’s Peter Parker. For some reason I just find her as a fitting and a better choice as the love interest then Max or Melanie. I’m glad that Epilogue gave her the perfect ending where it is implied after this mission Tery would propose to her with the engagement ring. It is also worth pointing out that she is shown to share Terry's strong sense of compassion by offering to drive Willie Watt home in ‘’Golem’’, even though it would likely cut her date with Terry short. But still tell us a lot about her besides being someone who gives Terry comfort and empathy as well as sometimes nagging towards when he disappeared. Also for some reason I do find the vocal chemistry between their voice actors Lauren tom and Will Friedle to be very good. I think you should also do two more Batman Beyond analysis videos on Max Gibson and Dana Tan as your next videos after this video?

Agreed, she's cool, Dana and Terry are a really nice couple because they are both very kind and bring out the Best in eachother. Even when she gets annoyed at Terry they always make up because she actually has enough empathy to understand that Terry can't Just ignore those responsabilites (even if she doesn't actually know what they are). I know if Ratboy was simply written as "chill rat faced dude living outside the system with his rats and loves every second of it without wanting to harm anyone" he wouldn't be a villain but it would be entertaining to watch all the same, if a bit gross.

I thought Ratboy was sympathetic but actually looking back on it now as an adult I realise that he is a very creepy and disturbing villain. He kinda reminds me of BTAS Mas Hatter. An outcast who just wanted friends but went about it the wrong way and lashes out at anyone who "makes fun of him". Even worse he feeds then to his giant rats. As awlays, well researched and informative. Patrick makes me think a bit of Oz Cobb. The writers give you some reasons to sympathize with him. There are a lot of folks who had crushes on people "out of league" that we thought, if given the chance, we could win them over. Or we were snubbed because we weren't born to the right parents, etc, like Oz. But then the writers go deeper, and we find that while we have surface similarities as we dig deeper, we realize, hopefully, that we aren't that alike. It is interesting in that comic, at the end, Dana still feels bad for him.

I like to think that Hillary heard someone ask about if he was inspired by the Ratcatcher and was then took inspiration from that when writing the comic, as I find it ironic how Patrick wasn't actually inspired by the Ratcatcher, yet his comic appearence had him become an exterminator with him adding yellow to his color scheme, considering how yellow was one of the main colors of Otis' costume. Either this, or Patrick becoming a successful exterminator was a way of doubling down on the "twisted-pied piper" idea

I wonder what events created Patrick. he's physically mutated to resemble a rodent has no stated family members, he lives inside of a sewer with a massive horde of rats that he has a very strange power over and the mindset he's developed normally takes years to grow and he's still maybe 16-17 years old, not impossible and with his Visage believable but serial murder as the result is certainly a heavy result after that.

Terrific video. Great analysis in the video and comments, too. He was definitely a notable one-off villain and appeared in a solid episode, with writing by Hilary J. Bader. May she rest in peace. I've always believed that this episode took a little inspiration from the film, "Willard," which focused on a young man who was able to command rats to do his bidding. In fact, one of the original ideas for the sequel to "Willard" was to have him survive the events of the first film and have him live in the sewers, where he controls his rat army. The studio decided not to move forward with that idea, and instead, made the sequel about the lead rat, "Ben."

Patrick in the show is one of those people that annoys me because he's an incel/those people that claim their a nice guy when they really aren't. He's the main inspiration for my version of Paul Rabin from Spiderman. You know, that four-eyed jerk who stole and corrupted MJ from Peter. Only this time he's a completely deluded man who grew up in an orphanage and was never adopted in his life. Like Patrick, he kidnapped young women (including MJ) to keep him company, treating them as possessions. Once rejected, he went from being a kind and understanding victim to an envious and violent scoundrel.

Maxie Zeus (in my opinion) was a good idea for BTAS. I find it interesting that DC Comics took Maxie, who was a somewhat obscure character in Batman's rogues gallery & re-worked him for Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, before they brought him into the mainstream DC Universe. There's a story in the comics about a gang war between him and the Joker that I found to be interesting. I wonder how an episode similar to the comic might've been adapted into either TNBA or in any other DCAU series.

If you want to talk about the mental gymnastics of fans then I'll just say make something up: "Ratboy has parallels with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!" It's clear that the toxic waste must have mutated some of the rats into giants. And maybe Patrick got mutated from it. He lives in a sewer. The turtles' foe Rat King controlled rats similar to Patrick. But that's where the similarities end. Maybe if Patrick had a hockey-masked hoodlum working with him then I'd believe it.

I like it when villains are seen as what they really are and shown to be that without the need for a twist like the Disney "twist villains" Patrick represents a desperation to be "loved" hes not actually attentive to Dana's powerlessness and pressure, terry coming in at the right moment at the right time to save her, shows the difference between love with empathy and compassion, vs. Being entitled to someone's love and affection. Also seeing in the justice league unlimited episode where terry does tell dana he's batman would actually bring them closer together since she'd most likely remember that moment and think "he was there for me..." we never got to see that reveal unless their was a comic about it somewhere.

Also interesting to note that Patrick has a resemblance to Nosferatu, and both have a connection in rats being a design inspiration. They also tend to wander in the shadows, hiding away from the sunlight. Not sure if there’s any other connections (need to catch up on Nosferatu) but can imagine there might have been some kind of subconscious inspiration for the writers

I always liked Dana's character in Batman Beyond. I actually think if Terry had told her he was Batman and explained why became Batman Dana would have been supportive and understood. While I also like Terry's Catwoman-like relationships with Ten in the show, Dana felt more like the one for Terry who wouldstick by him despite the fact his role as Batman does interfere with their relationship. And judging by the fact he intends to propose to her at the end of Epilogue, Terry and Dana are clearly endgame❤😄 If Batman Beyond ever did return with a 4th season set after Epilogue I think it would be interesting to show Terry now as a husband and possibly even a father still as Batman. Maybe Bruce has finally passed away. You could have Max as the Oracle character in the Batcave. The main story for Terry could be does he pass on the mantle of Batman to his son or daughter? The possibilities are endless. Anyway point is I really like Dana and Terry together

Patrick is a complicated villian to disect because we don't know anything about his origins when he debuted in Batman Beyond (unless I missed something). My head cannon is that he was mutated by the toxic waste in his lair, and that he was also using it to mutate the rodents he found in the sewers of Neo Gotham, enlarging them, and then training them to be vicious attack animals. As for how and why he ended up doing this, I assume it has something to do with his odd appearance, or maybe he really was rejected by society at large, and he retreated to the sewers for solitude. Or, perhaps he just had some sort of obsession with rats - I honestly don't know. I do, however, think that Patrick faced some sort of rejection in his past, and it is probably why he ended up where we see him, but I'm just making theories. I'm not excusing his negative behaviour either. It would be easy to point the finger at society, assuming Patrick was abused and rejected for reasons we may never know. However, it doesn't seem like Patrick sought out help. It seems more likely that he isolated himself, nursing his negative feelings, and that, unfortunately, turned Patrick into the unnasuming, obsessive killer we see in the show. Patrick may have started out as a victim, but if he had gotten help, maybe he could have turned out differently. That, I think is the real tragedy.
