Thanks for your thoughtful comments. I am Australian. I have read all Patrick White’s novels twice. I particularly like ‘The Eye of the Storm’ for two remarkably described and well developed characters, a brother and a sister. I agree that ‘The Tree of Man’ is a pleasurable read when compared to ‘Voss’, with ‘Voss’ having more depth. I too have read many ‘Nobel Prize for literature’ winners. Halldor Laxness novel, ‘Independent People’ being a particular favourite.

Thank you so much for watching and commenting, my friend! 😃 I visited your country a very long time ago, and absolutely loved it. Arriving from Argentina, it was the longest airplane trip I had ever taken. The Eye of the Storm is usually cited as one of White's best, so I'll definitely check it out someday. I haven't read him since I made this video, unfortunately. So many books... I recently bought The Aunt's Story, which I understand he considered (at least at one point) to be his best. Halldor Laxness, yes! I will make a video on him eventually. I love World Light, and I've also read Paradise Regained and Under the Glacier. I have copies of The Fish Can Sing, Iceland's Bell, and Salka Valka waiting for me, but Independent People sounds like a great option too. Thanks again, and have a wonderful day!

Very nice.. This is a book that's been on my radar for years but never quite rises to the top of the pile of books to explore. I do like that you point out that the "objectively superior" novels aren't always the most enjoyable. That's for sure the reason I'm more prone to trusting what I'm interested in as opposed to exploring some set literary canon (I mean it's a smart place to start, but once you have developed preferences and an aesthetic off you go).

It would make a great addition to your Everyman's Library collection. :) (They're such beautiful books... I just got their edition of The Tale of Genji.) I wonder if I would have arrived at Patrick White if he had not won the Nobel... But I totally agree with you: once you've set up your personal standards, it's better to trust your own reader's radar. With Cortázar, for instance, I enjoyed 62: A Model Kit much more than Hopscotch, even though I understand why Hopscotch is the more "important" novel. I liked Don DeLillo's Mao II more than White Noise. The list goes on. :) Thanks for watching, Echo; have a great evening!

So beautiful review. Thank you sir. It would be much better for students if you say summary of works while discussing novels. Lots of love to you.

Sounds like a fascinating piece. I would buy it if i didn't buy we'll to the woods no more by edouard dujardins after learning of it in your centennial tribute to ulysses. Voss does sound moving, though, and your thoughts are always fun to hear. Thanks for getting this out there!

Thank you so much, Quentin! Glad you enjoyed the video. I still have to read We'll to the Woods No More. I hope you'll make a video on it! I was happy to see a copy of Ugetsu monogatari in one of your more recent videos. The movie is one of my favorites, and I enjoyed reading the stories too. Have a great evening, my friend!

@@JorgesCorner thanks for the kind words! Tales of moonlight and rain was good, overall. There were some awesome stories in there, and some of the concepts were amazing. I'll try to make a video on it when i read it, but it may be a while. Let me know if you get around to it
