Imagine you’re a demoralized Gary Numan fan and this drops. So much promise for the future that has since been fulfilled. Amazing reinvention! Gary is the best!

I know a lot of people don't like this goth style as much as his original numan/machine style, but you surely have to agree: turning around from the funk era of 92-3 was the best decision he made in years.

Ryan Thomas oh i agree! Ill gladly take this and his newer stuff over crap like machine and soul and outland. However i am a big joe hubbard and pino palladino fan, so warriors and i, assassin get a pass in my end
@DannieGemz Жыл бұрын
personally i loved his goth time and everything since he moved with the times, some of those bands from the 80's stayed there and while that might be good for the old folks, it never does the artist any good to stay in the past, if he did he would be washed up now, im glad he made the choices he did

Yeah man -- TJ Davis. Brilliant singer, check out her vocal performance on the "Dream Corrosion" live album. Hard to believe it's been 23+ years since 'Sacrifice' was released. Richard + Ade + brother John -- soooo young here.

I absolutely love this. There’s something slightly corny about it, and I’m sure that was true at the time as well, but it’s just oozing with authenticity and energy. I can’t help but get up and dance whenever I hear that piano chorus- looks like Gary feels the same.

hi PatrickIngham21, you have just made my day; i watched this when it was originally broadcast and was totally blown away by gary numan's voice and charisma, the rocky guitar, the atmospheric synth sounds, the clever use of space in the track, the tight drumming, and yes, ok, i admit it, the girl in the catsuit with the big mouth gyrating her hips.
@machinemusic98883 жыл бұрын
One of the few times a Numan song sounds great with female backing vocals.
@mikeydashank38972 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Other rare examples would be the songs Berserker, Cold Warning, Your Fascination, and My Breathing where they don't sound out of place or overpowering and actually compliment well

"Scar" & "The Iceman Comes" think they would go down great again Live.

The whole song of "your fascination" isn't complimented by anything. Its catchy but embarassing
@marpsr Жыл бұрын
It was hit or miss, love Your Fascination, Call Out The Dogs, My Breathing, and Berserker, but don’t care for stuff like This Disease or Creatures. He did end burying himself behind other singers and musicians, so glad he stopped doing that.

i recorded this at the time; i always had a vhs tape in the machine and the remote in my hand, ready to hit the red button every time good music came on programmes like rapido, the word, the chart show, even TOTP - sadly my father recorded over a couple of hours of one tape with a documentary about hitler - so i lost this and thought i'd never see it again. god i fucking love the internet.

Cool thanks for posting. The guitarist is Kipper, also played for Sting BTW. Saw him live with Numan back in the early 90's. Gifted musician but tended to improvise too much for my liking. Excellent stuff from Numan.

Love Gary Numan, been a fan since 1979. Let me be the first to say that this icon of a man has more than earned the right to cockup his own lyrics if he chooses too. LOL!!! :) I'm actually covering this song right now in a music video and I'm trying to stay true to this particular version because it really jukes... That is, if I can figure out the lyrics he's singing in a couple of places. :)

I'm hearing obvious influences from Depeche Mode's Songs of Faith and Devotion, particularly "Walking in My Shoes", and Gary admits to his music career being turned around after hearing DM's SoFaD (1993) and NIN's Downward Spiral (1994).
@arranwalk2 жыл бұрын
Seriously half expecting him to go into "Now I'm not looking for absolution..." and "I'm not looking for a clearer conscience..."
@arranwalk2 жыл бұрын
I do like this song, but I can't ignore the heavy influences I see and hear. Don't particularly care for the sneering that reminds me of Billy Idol; it's a bit over the top. But it's also funny, since back in the late 70's, critics were calling him a Billy Idol lookalike 😆

@PatrickIngham21 Sorry, I meant to say that thank God Kipper is NOW gone. His "show-offy" guitar-playing style just didn't fit in with Numan. Not to mention those awful spandex shorts. He has also had quite the hand in the making of Machine and Soul, Gary's worse album. On another note, I'm disappointed to read that Gary will be doing a "best of" tour this year. How do you want the fans to move forward if you keep going backwards? And I thought Gary said that he hated nostalgia...
