So my daughter is half Native American and White, I take out to her grandparents house on the rez all the time and she always came back with stories about how her and her cousins fought against the rez dogs everyday. Funniest stories ever until she smuggled one home with us when I picked her up last year, so now I have a rez dog on my ranch teaching my other dogs to be a rez dogs.

@@lucitajames6166 There's literally not a moment that some kid somewhere didn't "just get killed by dogs." Dogs kill like 25,000-30,000 people a year, children being the largest portion of those deaths. Does that mean we're never allowed to joke about packs of stray dogs ever? Of course not. Idiots behind the wheel kill thousands of people too, but we don't all try to shame people for laughing at dumb drivers. I seriously just don't see what your point is here.

You got some inappropriate replies...and I'm sorry. As for me, I am totally with you on your astute comment! Natives have FAR more respect for elders than most everyone else, especially in the U.S....they actually honor them and learn from them while our white culture denies them the right to even be alive...until they become one.

Years ago I had a dog who was a pretty good guy. He kept the other dogs out of our yard, kept the kids from getting too close the the street, and went with me when I went out riding. There was this other dog along the way, behind a fence. Big guy, too. Every time we went by, he and Oscar would run along the fence, cussing each other out in Dog and threatening to tear each other up. One day, the gate was open and the two met face to face and the other dog's owner and I waited for the inevitable fight, both of us big-eyed and holding our breaths. The two big dogs looked confused, then ran back up the fence cussing each other out. The two humans both had a good laugh, gave the rez nod, and went back to doing what we were doing. Rez dogs...

But I had a dog who would escape the house, refuse to come back in, chase cars and people off from coming anywhere near our house, would bite cars, and would only let a select few outside of our family pet him. This is too funny, I swear you guys are basically the same as the Maori's in New Zealand. Our small towns have dogs like these that act exactly the same. My uncle had a tiny chihuahua called Brutus, he was king of the street. Chased everyone away from our corner, he was boss of all the dogs and even latched onto the balls of a new rottweiler that moved into the street and won. That dog never tried to bother Brutus again. The dog I had then, would lie in the middle of the road with his kitten tribe and stop traffic. He would also just sit in the middle of the yard when we got the jehovas come around, he would just stare at them and freak them out. It was hilarious. They soon learnt not to come near our house and they would cross the road to avoid us, and cross back over when they got far enough away from my dog!

Literally how we got our dog: 2016 Gonna take a road trip out west, and said to my husband "we're not going to be those hippies who go out west and come home with a traveling dog". June 21st: driving through Navajo land, stop at a gas station / trading post in Teec Nos Pos. See super cute dog. Dog comes up to me as I get out of the car, looking rough. I give him some water. Go into the gas station. Come back out, give cute dog some beef jerky this time. Waiting for my husband. Start petting the dog and pick some ticks off of him. Stop picking the ticks. Dog puts his nose under my arm. Heart melts. Husband says "do you want this dog?". I say "let me ask about him". Go into the trading post and ask the proprietor of he knows anything about the dog. His answer: "he probably belongs to the people across the street, but no one will care if you take him". We put dog in car and drive him to the closest vet. Find out he is on the brink of death. Get him medicine and a de-ticking. Name him Sundog. Drive Sundog home to Michigan. He is the best dog I've ever met, with a beautiful personality - the light of our life. Thank you, Navajo people, for allowing me to bring this animal into my family. He is also a neighborhood celebrity, and people keep getting dogs after they meet him, but their dogs are never as good.

@@monicanlamppost9631 The dog was neglected. He was emaciated, thirsty and starving, covered in ticks, and had a tick-borne disease that almost killed him. We literally saved his life. He is well-cared for and happy now. So you don't get to judge.

@@earthaforester3141 so instead of taking him to a local shelter or community service center so he could be rehoused you took him. Like I’m not faulting you for doing the best you though was for at the time, but it does highlight the mentality people have when they travel through native sovereign land. They see something and take it, instead of contact the proper native people.
@earthaforester3141
@earthaforester3141 3 жыл бұрын
@@gamer242mooo I understand what you are saying. But we would have adopted him regardless of where in the country we found him. It's not about taking from Native sovereign land. Most shelters are under funded and overburdened as it is. We did what we thought was right. We gave him health care, safety, love, and a home, which is what he needed, and what he would've been waiting for in the purgatory of a kennel anyway. He's not a child who needs to stay with his people and remain connected to his culture. He is an animal. And we had permission to take him. I didn't even ask the trading post owner if I could have him - he offered him to me. It didn't feel right to abandon him, knowing I could provide what he was in desperate need of. I don't believe in seeing a problem and pushing it onto someone else when you have the power to do something about it. I truly believe Sundog would have been dead in a matter of days if it weren't for us - and we've had two different vet clinics tell us as much. He is a part of my family now, and I cannot apologize for that. I think the story of how we found each other is a beautiful one.

Aw, nice to have Natalie back, she's so pretty and lively. Kind of weird too I recognized the meaning of 'miyo pimatsowin' even though I'm 'Ojibway' and not Cree. In Ojibway, or rather, Anishinaabe, it would be "mino bimaadiziwin" meaning something like 'good life'. edit: btw that's seriously the cutest rez dog i've ever seen too at 11:32.

Freaken hilarious. Its true they mark your house when you have mean dogs. When I was a kid, the NTUA guy told my mom we wait until someone is home before we get out to check your meters. He said your house is marked with a RED thumb tack so we know you have mean dogs. 😂😂 Don't worry, they were in our yard and never got the NTUA man.

It is nice to know that there is a community to support the Rez dogs. A friend of mine used to drive a Pepsi truck and delivered Pepsi to the Reservation from Flagstaff. One day, he came home with a dog. He named her "Stray Dog". The best dog ever. She went with us travelling around, going boating on lakes, hot springs, canyon hiking. I took her to school at NAU one day and I was only going in for a short time and then I was going to take her hiking. It was thundering and I guess I left the window in the truck down too low. When I came back, she was gone. I looked for her for 2 weeks, talking to local businesses and walking along the roads and through fields between NAU and North East Flagstaff. Circle K guy told me she had been sleeping under a car at the mechanic down the street! Dog walked 20 miles but could not get across the under/overpass with the traffic to get home. We all cried so much with joy. She ended up moving to Hawaii with another friend of mine where she lived out the rest of her life. What a dog. Definitely NOT an Alpha! P,S, Love your show!

You guys, I just love your channel, and, so far, all the guests. Natalie is superb, I think I subbed before, if not, I will. Beauty, brains, and humor, most important. I loved the mention of Rez Dogs needing care. Spaying and neutering, local vets should give deals! But I assume people dump them there, too, which is awful. I live in Kingman, Az. There was a table of Native, mostly women and girls at Walmart. They had pictures of dogs from 3 of the reservations closest. They've been working on a 'standard' and had a petition to AKC to create a breed. These dogs were like a bit sleeker, German shepherd or Belgian, Malinois, but had some border collie. They said the had some coyote, too. They looked it. I signed, and as they were taking suggestions for breed names,that was fun! They were thinking 'American Indian Shepherds'., or 'American Rez Shepherds' .There were a few joke ones that were cute. I suggested 'American Coyrez Sheep dogs' or 'American Rezote Shepherd'. They seemed to like mine, too! I've not seen them, so don't know, but I know it can take a long time with AKC. I'd like them to become a 'thing', and Native women, girls, have them as guardians!👍🥰🤎✌🎃
