You know what would be really cool? Take your vehicle and make it a ragtop--they sell kits to do this. Then, cut a hole in your tent base, sew windows in your pop up and you've got a vehicle you can stand in, cook in, sleep in, etc etc. Once you can stand in a car, you have so many possibilities. Not just that, but if you made your topper such that you could remove it, it can go from ragtop enjoying summer sun to camping just by installing it back on your car. The fact that the lid is light really opens up possibilities. You do such great work!

I have a Silverado with the 5'-8" bed. I am thinking about a diy truck cap with something like this on top extending partially over the cab to give the length to camp and still be able to use my truck bed. Thanks for sharing as I believe a similar cap / rooftop tent will do the trick!

Looking at the zipped door, on factory made one’s the canvas extends past the end of the zip by about 2inch. Just to keep the door from letting water drip in when it’s windy. A great piece of work, I bet there have been some evolutions or modifications made as time has gone on.

Dang! That's really good... the only thing I kind of concern about is the bottom part of the build. I see that you have the fabric going down to a channel on the top of the lower frame. When it rains, the water would go down to that channel and maybe you're thinking of adding a channel outlet for the water to exit? If I was going to make that, I would have the cloth part hanging over the bottom frame so the rainwater or dew would just drop straight down at the same time, you're protecting the bottom frame from the water. Oh dang it, I didn't realize until now that this video is 4 years old hahaha!

A LOT more work and you aren’t saving that much weight if any. I built a clamshell version built the exact same way but covered the wood with fiberglass and painted. It’s still pretty light Weight. I have videos on it.

Here, use aluminum for framing air alloy for insulation and azdale panels. Gas struts to help raise the pop up shelter with built in frameless windows and a door into azdale panels that fold up from floor and down from the ceiling that swivel lock into place with weather striping on all securing points. You can design a cube or a yurt type design that you can attach to the roof of a car and lift off and place on the ground for a pop up mobile home. You could even design a pop up bathroom with a cartridge toilet and cartridge shower you could connect to the main structure. Or design them modular and carry a few of them on a utility trailer and have a true shelter instead of a tent when camping or for emergency use? ; )

Yes, I would love a "how to" video! Or just design plans if you have them. I'll pay you for them for sure. Those gas struts are dope! I really want a rooftop for my 87 Grand Wagoneer and all the companies online are outrageously expensive. I get why but damn I don't camp often enough to drop 1K on a tent.

Outer walls being azdale and inner walls could be thin wood panels like ceder to give the pop up a cabin type feel. Throw in a faux electric fire place to keep warm and use an induction cook top. You could even incorporate electric exhaust fans on high one low for air movement. You could design the shelter with built in electrical with a plug in outside like a regular recreational trailer that's powered off a generator. Just throw in fold up chairs and a fold up table and fold up bunk beds and your set! You could even design spring pressure water vessels for hot and cold water. Like a huge hyperdermic with a spring on the plunger for constant pressure made out of PVC one black one white for hot and cold water. You could even I corporate a water stinger in one water pressure insulated vessel that was solar powered to generate hot water. Just some cool ideas for you. Like a pop up cartridge shower. Telescopic spring loaded tubes that raise a soft plastic shower curtain with a water adomizer shower head in the top with an on off button with the pedestal having drain and a tank for Grey water or a hose connector for run off into a hole. Pop up cartridge shower.
