You are touching on something truly profound. Before the Islamic invasion of Persia, many Persian kings began to recognize and respect the Christian community. Today, in modern Persia(iran), we see a growing number of people leaving Islam in search of something deeper. It’s important to note that Zoroastrianism is not pagan-it is a monotheistic faith that shares many similarities with Christianity. Zoroastrianism predicts the coming of a savior, the Saoshyant, which makes the connection between the three Magi-Zoroastrian priests-searching for the Saoshyant and finding Him in Christ even more significant. As an Iranian, I never made this connection before, but I now see how Christianity may be the true fulfillment and extension of Zoroastrianism. I believe this story is incredibly important for Iranians to know and understand.
@pamir_sogdian_iranic
@pamir_sogdian_iranic 10 күн бұрын
So the Iranians have been their manipulating the psyche of the world from the time of Mithraism and its spread throughout the Roman Empire prior to Christianity and with the story of the Magi yet again they brought about change in Judaic tradition. While all these events shook the belief and politics of the Roman Empire later the Iranians once again manipulated the Arabian pagan tradition and changed the course of history through the teaching of Salman the Persian as a mentor and spiritual supervisor to Mohammad in Arabia. It was through his knowledge ,wisdom and political advises that Mohammad could change the Arabian tradition and ways of life and Islam later becomes a universal religion.

God's Providence that you came out with this when you did as I was REALLY wanting to understand the Magi better this year. It's been on my heart specifically because of the myrrh. The myrrh-streaming Iveron Icon is coming to my church soon & naturally, having questions about the myrrh, it's the Nativity season, I really started to wonder about the Magi. Good episode! One thing I didn't hear you mention is the possible/probable connection between the Magi and the Prophet Daniel. As I recall (and I must admit that I don't remember where I heard or read this), when the Prophet Daniel was appointed by King Nebuchadnezzar as his chief sage, he passed a lot of knowledge about the things he had prophesized to the Babylonian wise men and it remained in their tradition. Fast forward to the time of the Persian rule over Babylon (which you did mention) and it seems that the Magi were expecting this sign of the birth of the Messiah, at least in part because of the knowledge that had been handed down to them from the time of Daniel. Is this something you have encountered in your research?

So very interesting indeed, though if I may add a small observation. The single biblical account in Matthew 2 simply presents an event at an unspecified point after Christ's birth in which an unnumbered party of unnamed "wise men" (μάγοι, mágoi) visits him in a house (οἰκίαν, oikian), not a stable. Just for additional information for anyone that is wanting to know more.

Acient traditional Catholic belief is slightly different, which I offer with respect: St. Joseph ( acting as the Head of the family) gave the Gold for the Poor, the Frankincense to the Temple, and Our Lady kept the Myrrh for the Annointing of the Sacrificial Lamb at His burial. That is why their Faith is so touching: when the Angel bid them flee, they had nothing but the Providence of the Eternal Father. I love this channel ❤. God bless.

Please look into the fact that the 3 Magi didn’t end up finding Christ child in a stable, by the time they got there he was already around 2-3yrs old and the Hoy family had already moved from the cave by then. That is why Herrod had infants murdered in that age range as the Christ child would have been about that old too.

Greetings from Melbourne! Just discovered your channel and loving the content. Also, had no idea you guys are based in Australia! Very cool! The story of the 3 wise men has always resonated with me. I’m a convert to Orthodoxy from Hinduism. Although Hinduism is different from Zoroastrianism, there are ancient links between the two religions and cultures (astrology is big in Hinduism too, till this day). In discovering the truth of Christianity and Orthodoxy, the 3 wise men were inspiring figures for me. As men from “the East” I see them as representatives of not just the Chaldeans or the Persians, but the entire Far East, who followed the star of faith which led them to the manger. To a large extent this reflects my own journey, spiritually speaking, from the East (my native religion) to Christ, by following the star of faith (genuine seeking for the truth). It was also very interesting to know that St Thomas met the 3 wise men on his way to India. The fact that Christ was visited by men from the East at his birth, and the fact that he sent the apostle Thomas to India, makes me think that spreading the gospel to the Far East was an important part of Christ’s mission. I always thought of Christianity as a religion of the West. But in discovering the Orthodox Church I found that this was not so, far from it in fact. By the way, part of me wonders whether the 3 wise men, simply by virtue of the fact that there are 3 of them, has some connection to the Trinity? Would love to hear any insight on this!
@Patristix
@Patristix 11 ай бұрын
Christianity is very much connected to the East indeed! And you walk in the footsteps of the magi, and the star still leads to Christ! There is actually a very old traditional story that one of the wise men was Punjabi or Indian. A 14th century collection of traditions written in Germany by John of Hildeheim says he passed through a famous silk route city in Punjab on his way to Bethlehem. This matches with an old Armenian tradition that says Caspar was Indian.
@shivabreathes
@shivabreathes 11 ай бұрын
@@PatristixThanks. Yes I have heard this before too. It might be worth pointing out that the region known then as the Punjab was much larger than the current Indian state of Punjab. It historically included large parts of what is now Pakistan and possibly Afghanistan. So it’s not too much of a stretch to think that one of the 3 wise men may have been from that region. In any case, great video!

@@PatristixI have done some further research on Zoroastrianism, which I knew very little about. For those unaware, there is still a community of Zoroastrians living in India (“Parsis”). I actually have a good friend who belongs to this community. The prophet Zoroaster had a vision of a being known as the “mind of God”, who taught him about Ahura Mazda, the supreme and one God. Surely, these are references to the Son of God (the divine Logos) and God the Father. Further, he is told of the birth of a future messiah who will be born of a virgin. There are many other details and almost all of them agree with the Orthodox Christian understanding. It therefore ties up very nicely with the story of the Magi, the fact that they were Zoroastrians and were aware of the birth of a future Messiah, that they found this to be Jesus, all of this makes sense.

Could you do a video sometime on St. Kassiani? She’s my patron (and a super cool lady) but there’s not a lot of content about her!

As an atheist it’s interesting to look back at the history of the religions. Different peoples took on different beliefs and each religion became the backgrounds to how they evolved.

Well, we don’t actually know how many magi there were, only that they were three gifts. Most likely, there were many more of them and would have been a throng of people with them, adding to the fear from Herod and the people in Israel. Also, they were influenced from Daniel when he and his three friends where taken captive. Daniel would have teachers them about God and they would know about the true God.

The underlying Aramaic word for the LXX reading of ⲙⲁⲅⲟⲓ "Magi" is אשפיא 'Ashephaia' meaning "astrologers." Thus Daniel was appointed chief of the Magi.

Here's what I remember from my studies before I watch, the names of the kings/magi/wisemen were Melchoir, Gaspar (Casper) & Balthazar, but they were likely leading an entire caravan of many priestly (possibly thousands) and brought three very specific & symbolically important gifts. I've also heard it said the gifts were symbols of their respective homelands. St. Bede claimed these homelands to be Arabia, Sheba (Ethiopia) & Egypt, however that wouldn't make them Wisemen of the East for someone born in Bethlehem, more like Men of the South. The magi designation insinuates that they hail from different realms of the Persian Empire. The most compelling explanation of this I ever heard was they were the priestly class of the Persian Jewish Diaspora, still in exile in the Orient, making a pilgrimage to recognize the true & rightful King of the Jews foretold in Scripture, the Moshiach, the Christ child, similar to Samuel the Prophet chrismating young David, perhaps even a OT/NT typology...and I think that's what I remember, let's see what I learn.
