“Patrol Vehicle Radio” is a color, police training film that underscores the importance of using the police patrol radio correctly and responsibly and the implications of doing so on the work of the dispatch operators. Dating to the early 1970s, this film is part of a larger series of police training films called “Roll Call” which were executive produced by legendary filmmaker Sid Davis. Written, produced, and directed by Sanders/ Rose/ Swedloff, this film features reenactment footage of officers out in the field using the patrol vehicle radio as well as the women who answer the calls at the dispatch center.

I have been a 911 Dispatcher for 23 years. Everything that the officers shown in this video still happens today. I love that there was a training film for officers telling them the Dispatchers have a tough job, too. Thanks, Periscope.

¡I THANK YOU for your service! I live in Southern CA, and there’s not one month that passes by without me calling 911, usually because of debris on the highway. Drivers need to know it SAVES LIVES (and evades accidents) to call!

Have you received calls such as example, someone sees a hit-and-run and says, "hey I saw this car hit this and they split the scene but I got the plate." Which run the plate and it comes back record not on file. Calltaker: what type of vehicle? Caller: I dunno but I got the plate. Calltaker: what does the driver look like? how many people in the vehicle? Caller: I dunno but I got the plate. Calltaker: what is the direction of travel? Caller: I dunno but I got the stinkin' plate!

By the 1980s, many police departments had installed the mini repeaters in patrol cars, enabling officers away from their car to use walkie-talkies to communicate with dispatch. That was a huge boost to efficiency in communications for officers in the field.

Started monitoring police calls in the early 70's I've heard it all and fully respect both the dispatcher and the officer in the field.

The model for Japan's security system was the accumulation of America's superior technology and sincere practical experience. …for me personally, it was nice to see the giant GMC 1974'' Matador.

At least now officers have portable radios so they never go missing on the air. Every so often they have an open mic though. That's always frustrating.

Dispatch always had my back when I was doing field work. I'd always make time (or even an excuse if needed) to swing by that part of the center and chat with them in person. I think it helped us understand each other over the radio. Now I check JIRA for new comments on tickets?!? It's like trying to work based on information from Twitter. Amazing we get anything done.

AMC Ambassador squads... Made in Kenosha Wisconsin in the 70s... Good paying jobs, all gone now, the factory was torn down a dozen or so years ago. :(

I think they were Matadors, Ambassador was AMC luxury model (Called "Kenosha Cadillacs", Ambassadors used the same basic body, but were slightly longer and had much nicer interiors.) But Hey who knows, Pittsburgh once had a few Buick ELECTRA police cars, As if a LESABRE was not good enough?!? LOL. I love AMCs (My grandfather was a Nash man..) I had a Gremlin and a Sportabout (Best looking wagon of the '70s!)

There's an old saying, YOU may know where you are, and GOD may know where you are but if dispatch doesn't, you and God better be good friends.
