I was raised by my grandmother and everything ran on a schedule. Monday was wash day. We had an electric washer, but no dryer so everything was hung on the outside clothesline or in the basement on racks. There was also rules on how the the clothes were placed on the clothesline. We had 3 lines and certain clothes were required to be placed on a certain line. The sheets went on the line closest to the alley and underwear went on the middle line, and shirts, pants, etc when on the line closest to the house. That way all our private items were hidden from view.

My grandma had a very small washing machine. You had to hook the hose of the machine to the kitchen water faucet. She also hung everything on the clothesline.

My grammy had a wringer washer and clothes went on clothesline in the back yard. I had also seen her at the kitchen sink (which was rectangle in shape) with her small-to medium sized washboard she used for things more delicate that she didn’t want to put in the washer. And I recall a pulley style clothesline she had in what they called “the shed” where she hung some smaller items out of the weather. (“The shed” to me wasn’t really a shed as from the back door led into a space that was all enclosed and attached to the house.). The history of this house is that my grandmother’s father actually built the house as a duplex. His family lived in one side, which is where my grammy grew up until my grandparents married and rented it from her father (at a very good discount as you can imagine!) So “the shed” was all open to both homes with a partial wall the divided the two halves of the space. When I post my finished block on FB page later, 24:08 I will share a funny story that my mom shared with me one time about the clothesline outside.

Love this block. Immediately thought of wringer washer boudoir you said it. My grandma had one and I thought it was so cool and wished my mom had one instead of her front loader although now I would favor electric over wringer..less work. We had those jelly glasses and had shrimp cocktail plastic ones for juice glasses.

Grandma in a halter top! Love her! My grandma also has the ringer washer and a long clothesline with the poles. As well as a coal stove! She was very old school. And loved her birds and fish tanks. The other day I finished my last ufo top, all quilted and bound! Working on a scrap quilt from the layer cake book from FQS. Will go to the Code Blue center. It’s been brutal here. Thanks Pat for all you do

I love the concept of theme months to 'complete' a project or two. A great idea, and encouragement to make it happen. For 'FINISH IT FEBRUARY" I need to add hanging sleeves and binding to at least 2 quilts this month that have been quilted and ready for me to finish. Ode to the National Park--and Toffee Bar from March 2024 a block-a-day project. I just picked up my "Ode to the National Park' quilt from my longarm quilter yesterday--that needs a hanging sleeve and the binding and that is my MAIN one to finish this month--probably this week. We had it spread out to look at it and a lady visiting the quilt shop asked if she could see it--she lives here in the county (Sevier County--Smoky Mountains area) and she loved it. I told her how to find Pat and her website and she typed it in her phone. She loved the Park quilt idea. I love promoting Pat, her web page, and her videos. I have several quilts that I made that have been quilted--and just need the hanging sleeve and binding. I need to make a list, and do like you Pat, make it a priority!

My grandmother had a wringer washer with a double clothes line. She also had a well where we would draw water to fill a metal tub on the back porch to take a bath. When I was young I would take baths with my cousins (3 at a time!). She also had a two- holer out back where we had the Sears catalog for toilet paper. At home we did have an inside bathroom and an electric washer. My mother always had at least two wire lines to dry clothes on. I have great memories and am thankful for not having some of them at my own home! Those were strong women…much stronger than I have ever been!

Patyou are absolutely correct. Instead of a list on what to do and how to nothings, I prefer you sharing with us what you like to do and the way you like to do things. I learned so much from you. For example: I am using your art bin storage for future projects that I have planned for to work in the future. I am right now working to eliminate each year more items to at one point get down to 8 projects, to have a faster turn around time and to be able to splurge into buying new fabric. It is not easy, but I learned to be more project oriented, instead of fabric hoarding. I also learned what size scraps are worth saving for me and discard what's too small for my taste. You also taught me that it is ok to be different. In the end it is about what I like first. My family at times makes things difficult for met, as there are weddings or baby's that need my personal quilt attention lol those kind of events truly set me back and I have to learn to refocus, which by the you are also helping me big time by sharing how you stay on top of your projects. You do a fantastic job of keeping us motivated with everything you share. Thank you for that!

I remember my Grandmother having a wringer washer in the basement and carrying the wet load up the stairs and outside to the clothesline. Yes, there was a particular way to hang the laundry, hiding the personal items. In the winter, depending on how cold it was outside things were hung in the basement. She didn't get her "automatic" washer until the late 60's early 70's with a matching dryer. Maytag was her choice! She still preferred everything to be hung to dry, even in the winter. The house always had a fresh smell to it from the laundry being hung outside. I miss that.

I love the spinning washer block. It has some wonderful movement in your block with the stripe fabric. My mom used to have an old wringer washer. Wash day at my grandmother's house was very exciting as children. She had an apartment on the top floor of her apartment building. So her clothesline was three stories off the ground and ran on a pulley. She would open the porch window to access the clothesline which she let us pull to move the clothes away from the building so she could hang the next garment.

Love the Finish it February idea! It's a great way to get us motivated to finish a project. I'm focusing on sewing blocks, sashings, and cornerstones on an on-point quilt. Need to finish it so I can use my design wall for something else. I think you giving us prompts and discussion ideas for 'our' roadmap is a terrific idea. Cute Grandma's Kitchen block ~~ yours and those in the block parade! Also your Tula blocks are cute. I think in the block putting the middle stripes horizontal and the top/bottom stripes vertical is an interesting touch. My maternal Grandma had a wringer washer on the back porch. One of my aunts was only 2 years older than me, and when I would go for a visit we would do the laundry. I always thought the wringer was fun. :-) Eventually Grandma started going to the laundry mat on Saturdays, and she would buy us a bottled Pepsi and a bag of peanuts that we'd pour into the Pepsi. I wonder if I'd still like it. 🤣

One of your greatest talents is the ability to teach us how to think about our own Quilting lives. For example, you have taught me how to choose my own color schemes in my blocks without relying on someone else’s choices in a pattern. Yes, I have artistic background, and I have relied on the color wheel, but you reinforce all the good basics of size of pattern, style of pattern, and. To trust my own instinct. Therefore, you’re absolutely right about not giving us a list, but teach us how to organize our thoughts on how to make our own lists of organization or set up. Thank you for asking and keep on keeping on!❤❤❤

My Mom had an automatic washer and a clothes line. My Dad's left foot was smaller than his right foot. To make up the difference, he wore 2 socks on his left foot. I can remember my Mom counting his socks on the line to make sure there were 21. In 1975, I visited my aunt who still had a wringer washer. I helped on laundry day. She also had sticks to prop up the lines. I have used a clothes line most of my adult life. It is underneath a giant shade tree so my clothing and quilts don't fade in the sun. 😊

Good monthly challenge! Life has been chaotic lately, and I have a butterfly quilt I've been working on free motion quilting forever. Having this challenge will make me accountable. I'll plan to break it down to mini-goals for each week/day and gift the quilt on March 1. Off I go!!!

I would love guidance in thinking about my stuff and how to scale down or just come up with a better organization system. Wash Day has evoked so many memories. My Nana had a ringer washer in an alcove on her back porch and clothes line as well. I'm in the middle of "trashing" my sewing room so I can't start this quilt until I put everything back together.

A year long back injury has kept me from doing anything in my sewing room and I have let everything pile up in the corners. My finishing up will be to empty boxes and get one area cleaned out and everything put away.
