Pattern Review Peppermint Magazine Wrap Top

I am currently sewing McCalls 7406 which is similar to the Peppermint Magazine Wrap top in regards to the front openings are finished by turning the fabric twice. As the front openings are bias cut the edges become frilly when folding them over twice. If I sewing McCalls 7406 again, I would sew bias binding onto the neck edge to help stabilize it.

Hi Sue , love your version and pretty fabric 💖. I think your idea for the tie sounds much better 👌. I have the Sew Over It Ella blouse, which is similar but has a grown on sleeve. I just cut out my pattern but haven't cut the fabric or anything. I really like your suggestions and I think I'm going to give them a try. Especially with just doubling the ties. Which will be much easier to sew than folding over that tiny bit of fabric twice (I'm a sewing newbie). And lucky enough I have bias binding that just so happens to match my fabric. I've had my eye on this pattern so I appreciate all your suggestions. I'd definitely have to add length and would keep in mind your tips on how to add intermediate techniques on front panel.

I'm just in the middle of making this and have also found that the bust is just too big and I even sized down. I do still need to out the sleeves in so I'm hoping that it'll bring it in slightly. I've been disappointed with the ties also and their finish! I'm going to cut another set and attach them so they're double sided. It does mean this top is quite an involved make, especially with all the French seams. I do think maybe the sew over it wrap top would be a much more simpler sew!? Thanks for sharing your review, it's most helpful. Wish I'd have seen it before I started making mine xx

I know what you mean. I didn't do any French seams for my first attempt, knowing it would have to be altered. I made it a bit longer, had to narrow the shoulders, and size it down I'd say nearly 1 1/2 sizes, after I'd put it together!! I also did the ties double sided with the same fabric, using a French seam to join them. It seemed a, lot of hassle but it turned out to be really nice. I wish I'd thought about grading the waist out a bit, as described here, as it did sit tight.. I don't really have much hip shape so it was OK. It still looks lovely all edges overlocked and turned over once. I'm about to do another one with these modifications. Did you do yours yet?

@@vivlee3840 Hiya, yes I finished mine and it actually turned out alright in the end. I did the ties double sided and just tie it really tight to synch it in. I wear it with my Nina Lee Camden Skirt which goes well with it as it's a high waisted skirt. I included the wrap top in one of my KZbin videos - my spring 2020 makes if you wanted to see it. Glad you got yours finished too xx

I made this last weekend and while it's perfect in the bust area it is way too short for me. I knew with my long torso I'd encounter problems but boy, that muslin barely fell to under my breast 😂 But your idea of bias binding is great and I'll do that as soon as I hacked my way through lengthening the pattern to make it wearable for me. I'm also thinking about adding a rayon lining to the ties but I'm a bit worried about the ties then slipping out of the knot too easily.

Ive done that with the ties, if one side is not as slippery it should be fine but guess you know that by now!

@@vivlee3840 hehe thanks gor replying! It worked out fine with my lining, mostly because of the reason you mentioned, with the other side being a linnen cotton blend it worked out well 🙂
