What if you are a long way away from a scaling photocopier or
printer? You can still resize you shapes manually. You can also
get them symmetrical if they are supposed to be, at no cost.
Que pasa si estas muy lejos de una fotocopiadora o empresora?
Puedes hacer ampliaciones y reducciones manualmente de todos
modos; y hacerlos simetricos si deben ser asi, para ningun costo
Making Patterns symmetrical starts at 4:47
Haciendo patrones simetrico empieza en 4:47

Both tutorials were so incredibly helpful. Especially the one on resizing. I've been looking everywhere for info on this and nothing really worked. I could just hug for this. Thank you so much.

I've never seen that method before. Its fantastic because it works with irregular shapes as well as regular shapes. With regard to the calculations. If you want to enlarge by 15%, you can just multiply the original figure by 1.15. Saves a couple of steps. Work with other values too. Cheers from Oz. :)

Simple way of doing the percentages on the calculator, use multipliers. A number * 1 means 100%. A number * 1.5 means 150%, as it's one and a half. So to get 60 with 15% more, just do 60 * 1.15, so you get 100% of 60 plus another 15%.

Awesome, love the logic here. Another method for enlarging and decreasing the size of a drawing or object is to use a grid. So first draw a square grid over your image, then taking a second sheet draw a second grid which is either larger or smaller. Then you can map the image points quickly without having to calculate lengths because the grid size determines the enlargement.

I can't comment on the use of calculus. Its been decades since I last sat in a classroom. :) All I remember about calculus is that it was fun...... for a while. :) Cheers,

Hi Philip, Ive managed to create screen dump instructions of your video for resizing my dress patterns. What I would like to know is, eg if I have a pattern say size 20-22 UK sizing and I want to increase it to a size 28-32 what percentage is each pattern size from original to altered. Could you use these sizes if you work it out for me please.

I have one question though. How do you know what percentage you need to use when scaling a pattern. Is it a matter of trial and error and after a while you kind of know which percentage should be used or is there a trick to that?

Great tutorial. One question though (i'm making garments but never really worked with grading) Do you have an easy way to know for a given standard size block (Medium) how many % you should had to achieve a Large size of the same shape. I have to admit i'm bad with maths :) In case you have an easy technics, i'm interested. Keep up the good work

The original size is 100%, so you have one of your current size. If you want it 15% bigger, it's 115%, as thats the full size plus 15%. Just take 100% and add how much you want to enlarge it by. If you want it 15% smaller, then take 15% off your 100%, so you get 85%.

yes but by increasing it 15% does this extra 5% represent a certain dress size - what percentage would represent each dress size eg 15% = size 16 20% = 18

It would be very helpful for me, a) Im not very good at maths, and b) large size sewing patterns are scarce and the postage is high for such a little envelope. please, pretty please, thank you, hugs and a kiss in advance. Can you get access to email addresses on youtube? Perhaps you could send me a pdf/attachment?
