@@zombieguitar I take it if I learn the all scales I will find it a LOT EASIER to shred every chord note of the most chord packed songs within the song time signature, which is not easy. I wish I'd binged on your channel FAR EARLIER since KZbin is seemingly demanding you pay for an advert block to watch all the channels, if I'm not mistaken. Relating to the piano helps me, thanks. I learned to play piano as a child and I find it easier to visualize chord shapes using the piano keyboard.

I have used this fretboard diagram to break it into 2 basic patterns to make this easier to remember. These 2 patterns are just repeated up and down the fretboard so this enables you to solo using the whole neck. You just have to memorize how to go from one pattern to the next and that comes with practice. I also use this pattern and a memory jogger to determine what mode I'm in. It has greatly improved my ability to solo in any major or minor key and in any mode. Once I know my root I am off and running. Different strokes for different folks for sure but I have been playing guitar for over 50 years and this has been the freedom I've been searching for. Now it's just my creativity at work.

Good video with tons of info..CAGED is my thing where i can visualize core tones( arppegios) , diatonic or penta tonic scale around chord ( major ,minor) ,triads Knowing ( seeing in real time )intervals Root 3rd 5 b7 ..for me in the end is what we say with instrument / lines..great video about stuff when we learn we say the same thing but we students visualize diferent.Good topic

This is how you play "in key"... This can be easily understood by simply sitting down at a piano and "noodling around" using only the white keys. Do that, and you'll be playing "in key" (for 1 of the 12 possible keys, all of which work exactly the same way as each other), and all of the notes that you play will sound good together. Translated to the guitar, that's what these patterns are. The only difference is that I used the key of G major for the example, whereas all of the white keys on the piano put you into the key of C major. However all keys work exactly the same way, and the "patterns" on the guitar are exactly the same for all 12 keys. So just "noodle around in key", and it will sound good. That's what these patterns are 😁

The relative minor shares the same notes and chords as it's relative major counterpart...and by extension, this results in them also sharing the same "fretboard patterns". I have a somewhat selfish request. Is understand if you didn't do it given the time it takes, but I'd love to see a compatible video that uses the numbering of intervals on the overhead diagram. 1st 3rd 5th flat 7 etc. Having the two to learn from would help immensely I feel. so the memorizing patterns does t work for me on guitar. because my memory sucks. it the same for memorizing chords on piano. on piano I like to use formulas to find chords. for instance. WWHWWWH for major chord, or lower the third a half step for minor. is there anything like that on guitar?

My problem is not the patterns so much, but changing key. I think I rely on the dots too much, and when I change key I know where I am at first, but get lost when I am trying to use the whole neck. I know they keys move up and down, but when your dots are in a difference place it is so easy to get lost.

For me the best approch is the 5 patterns approch: it mixes the patterns for pentatonis scale and the five positions of the CAGED system. And no fingers extensions...

The only thing about that is that CAGED isn't about "positions". It is about being able to play any chord, anywhere on the entire neck of the guitar...it's a different goal than the "scale positions" one that we are talking about here!

I hear ya!! With all the conflicting information out there, this stuff can definitely get confusing. What you are looking for right now, at this point is simply the "diatonic scale". Do not worry about modes right now, and do not worry about the CAGED system....(yet). What you are trying to achieve right now is to map out the 7 notes of a key, and doing so by recognizing the "movable patterns" on the guitar. None of this has to do with MODES!!!

I wish you would include neck diagrams for left handed players. I love the way you teach but when you show diagrams and things its basically useless to me which really sucks. I know leftys arent exactly mainstream or common but it does suck to basically just be completely left out of every conversation or lesson. Not blaming you or anything just venting a little I guess. You can use a mirroring plugin that flips the screen left to right. Yes, the letters are written backwards, but the red dots still show roots. Alternatively, and this is probably some effort but will bring you ahead by leaps and bounds, you can construct your own left hand diagrams by translating the right hand ones. This really makes you look at your fretboard and understand what is going on.

@@michaelvarney. Yes, that's a very good suggestion, that's how I got through college & grad school in neuroscience, by copying over all my notes after class. It made me think more about it, and more importantly, the act of writing it caused me to memorize everything! While I may have started out dumber than a bag of hammers, I ended up being an A+ "Star" student! 👍
