I was soo saddened to see the comments asking that Patti (and other singers in the English language) NOT sing the French songs--implying that they are in some way diminishing them. As a singer, I am THRILLED to see people whose 1st language is NOT in whatever an original song is written in, take the songs and make them their own. Patti did so (as she does with everything she sings), and has helped those of us who wondered its meaning (from Celine's beautiful Olympic opening performance). I was so taken by Celine's performance (her rendering and the orchestral arrangement) I yearned to know. PLEASE TAKE SUCH RENDERINGS from those who tackle such songs as a homage to the song/writers/original artists. Please stop comparing and simply ENJOY. Thank you Patti--you are a treasure...along with this orchestra, and arranger!! I've now replayed this at least 20 times--it's beautiful.

As a female vocalist, bass player and songwriter, I could not agree more. Each entertainer should be encouraged to put their own signature on any song they become enamored with, and drawn toward performing. Without individual interpretation, approach, chosen language and phrasing, variations would become limiting in expression and creativity.

The incredible thing about this performance is how Mrs. Patti gets emotional in the midst of the song, that is what she is giving us the emotion you can feel it as if this tragedy happened to her, then she has to compose herself and belt out the rest of the song. I researched and read the other English translation is closer to the original French lyrics written by Edith Piaf, who also sings it in both French and English. It’s on KZbin as well.
