I'm here upon learning that the composer of this, Burt Bacharach, has died, and in listening to so many of his hits from the 60s and 70s, I have the same reflections about my mom who raised me on "Easy Listening" music as you. However my memories look to be ten years older than yours, which shows the longevity of Bacharach and his songwriting!

This combination is genius. Normally Patti LaBelle reaching for all these high notes and belting that soprano would overshadow anyone else in a duet, man or woman…. But Michael McDonald’s voice is so haunting and full of loss and emotion, you can literally hear and feel the pain in his voice…. He knows when to gently pull back and let her explore the tone and play with the notes, then belts away on his turn. When Melodied together, they complement each other beautifully and sound like old lovers still longing in pain.

Black lace were making hits then. Just like people like Beyonce and adelle are now. What a bs point. This also came from a time when every "live performance" wasn't live and bands used fake members just because they looked good

You are right! If there was ever a definition in the dictionary as to what great "songwriting/record production/impeccable vocals/soothing sentiment/love" was, this song would be exhibit A (as they say in a court of law. Haha!) Just an amazing record - period! Enjoy. Cheers, Sam.
