She is singing the original lyrics, before the arrogant censors did a number on this R&H masterpiece. I don't know how she is horizontally speaking, but vertically Patti Lupone is a treasure.

What a natural she is for this genre. These difficult songs seem effortless to her. She was born to do this.

Just watch and listen to the dynamics she uses. She effortlessly resets her larynx by swallowing multiple times to ensure that she gives the highest quality tone possible. Excellent breath control to have consistency in volume and articulation. She has definitely crafted her gift into an excellent masterpiece.

Love that she sings the original stage lyrics rather than the G rated recorded versions of Ella et al. They were meant to be scandalous and Lupone does that well.

Ms. LuPone is definitely one of a kind. Although one can hear a difference in her voice as the years have passed (as is to be expected), she still sounds strong and energetic.

The slight shimmy she says "oversexed again" i's the best part. The part I look forward to each time I play this performance... That, and the part she leans over the piano to sin into the pianist's eyes... And how she says plum"🥰🤩😍

The trick is to take a very difficult song and toss it off as if she hasn't even rehearsed it. That takes talent and a lot of technical chops.

I believe the original version by Vivienne Segal in the Broadway recording of Pal Joey is upbeat and fast, hence Ms LuPone's seemingly rushed version. While I also love the rendition by Ella Fitzgerald, it's great to hear this in its unadulterated version, nonetheless by one theatre legend.
@ivydog20096 жыл бұрын
This is brilliant - the composition, the lyrics, her performance and the tempo. RE: comments about the up-tempo. This is a funny lyric - not serious. No need for a slow performance. Think about it (without going too deep) its about an older, woman (quite experienced) feeling young again - with sex being a major benefit. That's no place for a slow, ponderous take. (I hate it when performers play a piece too slowly - especially in classical. As if to say "I am a serious, dramatic artist, listen to how meaningfully I am playing this piece ... even though composer didn't write it that way... I'll just ignore that because I'm so serious and important..." Nonsense. I like this tempo - it's fun. Patty may have been simply been trying to keep things moving along - it's show business, you know, and she knows show business. Besides... they changed the tempo several times, which is great. More interesting. Also, as noted below this is the original lyric from the play - so scandalous that most recorded versions of this song afterward were re-written edited. "Boo" to the conservatives. "Hooray" to the non.

lol///its always about love...and how no one understands it...while in it....and there are other reasons performers play a piece slower..other than ego....in fact...most songs MUST be sung different as the performer ages...but..like you said you really dont think very deep.

The lyrics in this are much different than in my Rodgers & Hart Songbook, but I like a lot of them! It's a more sultry version of the song. And the "and worship the trousers that cling to him" is my favorite version of that verse! I'll admit I heard it first in The History Boys, but it's still amazing!

Nobody sells this song better than Patti LuPone. Every word is believable. No vocal "styling" necessary. (Just wish she's taken tempo half a notch slower. What was the hurry?)
