Patton Oswalt in fine form; he's one of the smartest, funniest guys on the planet. This brought back so many memories; I used to live in Hoboken, and I still miss Maxwell's, where this set was recorded. In the 1940's, it was a watering hole for the workers at the nearby Maxwell House Coffee plant (now also, sadly, gone-- the whole town used to smell like coffee whenever they were roasting. It was really great when you got a cross-breeze from the Van Leer Chocolate plant in Jersey City, and they blended into a yummy mocha aroma). In 1978, they started booking bands in the small back room, and Maxwell's became one of the best little Indie rock clubs on the East coast. This performance must have been during the last run of Yo La Tengo's famous '8 Nights of Hanukkah' shows that were a local institution there for 12 years, before they moved them to Brooklyn, when Maxwell's closed in July of 2013. I'm so glad that Patton Oswalt was part of Yo La Tengo's and Maxwell's legacies: people need to keep that crazy, creative vibe going.

He just referenced that guy who killed his family, John List, who lost his job and was broke and panicked, killed his wife and kids, laid them out in the front room all nearly, then ran and made a whole new life. He was caught many years later after an age progression model showed with the story on America's Most Wanted. Anyway the chandelier or stained glass window in the room the family was laid out in was an original Tiffany, worth several hundred thousand dollars, and obviously would have turned around his financial situation. Then he may not have killed his family, but I get the feeling that he kind of just wanted to and running from debt was an excuse. I mean, who doesn't have debt? Who hasn't lost a job and gone through hard times? And how much convenience do you swap out when you kill your family to evade debt but now have to live on the run after committing a horrible multiple murder? There can't be like "Phew! Got that debt off my back, now my new life free of any restrictions or lies can start...oh wait I guess not. He must have wanted to do it.
