There were two leaders that had an influence on one of my favorite commanders during my active duty service, whom I have always admired. Those two historical figures were Erwin Rommel and George Patton. He even had Patton's speech from the film posted on our company bulletin boards. I remember seeing this film in the time when it came out. Being a lad of 10 years old, I was instantly a fan of the portrayal of Patton by George C. Scott. I too was influenced to read "War as I knew it" written by Patton himself a few years later. I know now that there are some controversial scenes in the film that portrayed the British and, Montgomery specifically in a more negative light than was probably true. Overall though the scenes were in keeping with what we know General Patton felt, or how he viewed things at the time. Viewing the film today still evokes the man, the myth and the legend that was Patton. He is a type of leader that many soldiers will follow because he is a charismatic one, with luck and the penchant for winning, while bitching the whole time about him too, for that is the prerogative of all soldiers. Patton fully understood that as well, for he bitched about his superiors also.

Courtney Hodges had a much tougher assignment and handled it well. He and First Army were selected for the invasion of Japan, the final attack on Tokyo across the Kanto plain. Patton was relegated to riding around in jeeps and bemoaning the US alliance with the Soviets in favor of the Nazis.
