@PattymacMakes Жыл бұрын
Thank you Kate! Yes I do think having sewing skills will be highly valued if everything goes splat in the next couple of years. Nobody in my real life seems to care all that much about my sewing, but maybe that would change if they needed to make repairs and I could be the one to help with that. My one real life quilting friend who is my next door neighbor is moving in a couple of months, so I'm extra sad to see her go.

Well said! Yes..the table might be costly... but so is therapy! And sewing IS therapy for a lot of us. It's all a matter of perspective. I think if I didn't have hobbies during these times I would have gone off the deep end. I don't have this table...yet..but I hope to....as soon as I clean out my mess of a sewing space 😅.

You know what - I really appreciate your viewpoint. I came here looking at the Ikea table for my new sewing space, and stayed for your lovely ideas about sewing for your family. It has been something my family comes to me for - halloween costumes and cosplay, fixing toys, making something my kid has designed into a reality :) My 8 year old comes to me excited about a bag she's designed, it's great to be able to help her make it! Plus - it's a great thing to teach kids. How to mend and fix and even make clothing builds appreciation for the things we use.

I bought one in late 2021 based on your video (and I’m so glad I got mine at the $199 price!). I finally set up my sewing room, which is filled with ikea furniture. The Norden is used for my semi-industrial Juki so I have ample room to quilt. The Alex holds my spools of thread and I put 3 Kallaxes together to make my cutting table. Love my sewing room!
@PattymacMakes Жыл бұрын
OH WOW!!! I'm glad to hear this about your Juki because people ask about whether heavy duty machines will work on the table or not and it sounds like it will. Depending on the machine of course. Yeah, I'm so happy I got mine on the old price. I browsed the site today and I'm in sticker shock over how much things have gone up. I've seen people make cutting tables from Kallax units and that is a beautiful set up!!

I haven’t been to IKEA for so many years, but my daughter and I went last week to the Pittsburgh store and I saw the Norden table! I might have passed it over if I hadn’t recognized it from your original video. It is a really nice table! And yep, it was $350. I don’t have the space in my sewing room for it so I had to pass. I opted for the wall hanging peg board for my sewing tools. It’s really nice, I highly recommend it as well to anyone who has a small sewing space. ❤

Yeah, it sort of blends in with everything in the showroom. And it looks so small in that giant space. And YES! I love the Skadis system. I have a video or two on that as well, and I should do an update on that item, too. It's amazing how much stuff it organizes.

Thank you Patty. I just recently saw your original video about the Norden Gateleg Table. I recently bought a house where I will, once again, share my sewing room with a TV room. I live alone, so I'm fine with watching TV with sewing set up. But I will want to be able to take down and store everything when someone comes and wants to watch TV. Your tip about prepaying is helpful because I live 4 hours from the nearest Ikea. I've decided to do the click and pay, then plan a trip to Kansas City to go to Ikea and The Container Store in one trip. I have been enjoying your videos that I'm catching up on and appreciate your calm discussions and explanations. Again, thanks.

Thank you Linda! My whole house is multi purpose!! LOL!! I think you have a really good plan. Prepay your large items and plan some time to browse. The lunch is pretty good in Ikea so you could have lunch there before you go to the second store or come on home. I'm going to visit my store again and film the trip over. I've been putting it off until I could invest in a new phone to take decent looking videos. I should be able to get it this week!! Then I can start doing several different types of videos which I'm looking forward to sharing with everyone. I'm glad you don't mind my low key videos. I try to be myself when I make these videos, and I'm a fairly relaxed person.

Hello from Singapore 😊 I’ve been using my white Norden table daily for the past 11 years and it’s still going strong and serving me well. I do all sorts of crafts on it: sewing, cutting, quilting, painting, resin crafts, polymer clay, jewelry making (light hammering) etc. I have a huge cutting board set up behind my sewing machine and half the table is all I really need for active space for all my craft needs. The other half of the table holds my organized mess haha. Cleaning is easy because of the laminated finish of the white table. I’ve even used alcohol to remove stains and the surface is good as new after. Houses here are rarely carpeted because we have summer all year round. When I first got the table, I wanted to protect my tiled floor so I stuck those felt pieces meant for furniture legs underneath my table. My intention was only to protect my flooring when I push my table around, but I made a serendipitous discovery when the table moved easily without much effort. I love that I can totally move the table by myself without asking my husband for help - I don’t have to worry about being judged for my craft mess nor my craft stash 😂. Will I still buy it when the time comes to retire my current one? Definitely! I hope IKEA will never stop manufacturing this.
@PattymacMakes Жыл бұрын
Oh my gosh!! Thank you so much for sharing your craft story from the other side of the world (from me). I love this. We are so far apart, and yet we are using the same furniture in much the same way. I think that's pretty amazing. And thanks for the tip on using rubbing alcohol to clean up stains. I have the same finish on my desk, and sometimes I get pen marks that are a little difficult to clean up. This method will be perfect! I use alcohol to clean my iron and metal sewing machine parts, so using it to remove stains on my laminated finish will fit in perfectly with my cleaning routine. I wish I had the extra money and storage space to buy one now and put it away for later. But I'm short of both of those things, so I'll have to take extra good care of what I have so it lasts me. Lovely to chat with you!

I bought the Norden table based on your recommendation for the sewing space I was setting up in our vacation home. I needed something that would close up smaller. I got it at the $200 price, and did manage to get a birch one which fits into the decor better. I found clear plastic straight sided bins that stack and use them 2 up in 19:04 the drawers to hold my sewing notions. They work great and keep all those small bits and bobs organized perfectly. I found mine on Amazon (of course). They make those deep drawers very efficient. I’ve figured I could also slide the table out into the living space for food/serving space if I needed to as well, so feel it’s perfectly multi functional. I’d remove the drawers to make it lighter/easier to move. I agree with you that it was a great investment. Thanks so much for the excellent review when you first posted it! I’d been looking for something for a while and wouldn’t have thought about an IKEA product at all. It’s really well made. 👍

I bought a Norden based on your video. My machine is 28 lbs., and I'm looking for the Norden's weight limit. I just got it set up and placed my sewing machine and serger on it. I have the birch, but I use a mat under my machine and think that will help protect the surface. I have to say that I'm not crazy with the drawers. I wish they were wider, but that doesn't work with the nature of the table. There's enough room in the drawers to keep my machine accessories, so I must use something else for my notions and tools. However, I love its versatility and looks.

I don't have this particular gateleg table but I do have a vintage one. It used to serve as my cutting table but after years of using it that way it just got be to hard on my back bending over it. When we created my new cutting surface from a 34" high dresser by adding a piece of plywood to the top everything worked out beautifully. The gatleg slides under the plywood overhang perfectly so I can just slide it out from under what would have just been dead space anyway. I can set it up at the end of the cutting station and use it to place all my cut pieces on as I work. I can also still use it for crafting etc. I'm so pleased with the way everything worked out and how it all fits together in my room now. Gateleg tables are a true workhorse and can be moved fairly easily to any space in your home where you need a little extra workspace. Thanks for this nice follow-up review!

I’ve seen similar tables on Amazon and Wayfair that are adjustable heights and have casters as well. While I love the IKEA model in the birch there are other tables in melamine that might work for different budgets and height needs. I cut at a regular height table and it’s hard on my back. As is sewing since your body isn’t in an ergonomic position. But that being said I’m sure IKEA has some casters or even risers to help in both of those areas of concern.

Coming back to quilting after an 8y + hiatus. I have lots to inbox with lots of stuff bought for future projects. Had been thinking I should start buying only as I need but your comments on inflation and supply chain issues is making me rethink. FYI new to channel, will check out older video.
@PattymacMakes Жыл бұрын
Some people get agitated when I bring this up, and my intent is not to upset anyone. I only want to encourage people to have a little extra on hand. The inflation is a certainty as we move forward, and I'm not sure how that will resolve itself. So I'm putting away a little extra quilt batting and supplies so I can still enjoy quilting even in dire circumstances. I watch for sales and stock a little extra. Cotton crops last year were way down so prices will go up. I rather pay less today and have it on hand than pay more in 6 months. My thread I have on hand, I bought for $11. Now it's $13.98. I'm adding a half dozen more spools so I have it stocked up for later. Don't go bananas but list out projects you'd like to make over the next couple of years and figure out what you would need to have on hand to finish them. If you already have kits, then figure out what you need to finish them out. Probably batting and thread. Maybe backing fabric. If you like to make bags then maybe zippers and hardware are good to have on hand. I just know during 2020 when everything was picked clean and nobody could get their hands on anything, I had what I needed and wanted already on hand. It was comforting to know we were supplied and that whatever was going on outside my neighborhood didn't matter because I didn't have to got anywhere.

I have an Ikea tabletop that my youngest daughter bought. It is supported on one end by a drawer segment and on the other by a bookcase segment. I use the drawers for all my sewing supplies and the bookcase for my sewing books. It's big enough that I can have my two sewing machines out, although only one can be in a usable position at a time. The other is on the very end. It's very deep, so I can move my machine out of the way and use the part closest to me as a small work surface.

I agree that the Norden is a solid piece of furniture, well worth the price, even though the price has increased since I purchased mine at $199, which was a steal for the quality. It is solid, heavy, well made and I don't find the birch finish to be easily scratched or marred. My table is used every day and has held up very well for my use. I agree with Pattymac....at $349, it is still a good buy. The flexibility of this table is part of its attraction and could function in many different ways in a home. I love it in my sewing room.

That's good to hear from you regarding the finish! I still think it's the prettiest version even though I talk myself out of it because I already have this one and I love it too. It's good for so many places in the home.

Hi waving from the UK. Have just started to learn quilt - made my first quilt a month ago and loved it. On your recommendation I got the Norden (bought it second hand) and its been a dream. No more sitting at the dining table having to clear everything away at mealtimes! It takes up no room at all when not in use. I am now starting to collect material from charity shops etc, can you suggest a perfect way of storing these. Thank you for your videos, I really enjoy them and have helped me to avoid some of those beginner mistakes.❤

Hello!! Waving back from Coastal VA!! OMG what fantastic luck you must have to find a second hand Norden! I absolutely LOVE mine and I can't imagine getting rid of one! I do like to wrap my fabrics on mini bolts using comic book boards and I demo this in a video kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXbZhZWmhrBogtE. I've been doing this for a couple of years now, and I still implement and love this method. You can store in covered bins to put away under a bed or in a closet as well. Please note that this table is not suitable for heavier machines. I have a Janome Professional 6500 which weighs about 10kgs, and went to IKEA to buy this table where I was told by 2 separate staff members that it was unsuitable for anything that weighs that much as the table could collapse. Even if my machine was positioned in the middle and not the ends. I was disappointed but didn’t buy it. I am sure it would be fine for lighter machines, but just wanted you to be aware of this.

That's good information!! Thank you. Someone has asked about putting heavier machines on it, and I agree it doesn't seem like a good idea. I put furniture movers under the legs to make it easier to move, but I basically just leave it sitting out so I can just sit down and sew at any time. @PattymacMakes Жыл бұрын
I've been using it for almost 2 years, and it's a great little machine. I got it to make my quilting easier, and while the machine does handle several thicknesses well, the throat space is small. I quilted a queen size quilt backed with flannel last winter, and it was extremely difficult to get the bulk of the quilt through the throat. So for that reason, I'm interested in upgrading to a larger machine that is actually designed for quilting the quilts. But for attaching binding or any other type of application, it's been really nice to use. I would recommend it!

Your last remark makes me feel less guilty for investing in a new sewing machine and circuit also. Adding to my supplies.
@PattymacMakes Жыл бұрын
GOOD! It's not going to be any less expensive over the next few years, so if you're going to use your craft supplies, and you have a little extra, I always suggest investing in items that will make your life better. The thread I like to use was $11.98 a spool the last time I purchased some to put away. Now it's $14.98. I wish I had bought a little more when it was 20% cheaper. But you can believe I'll be purchasing a few more spools as soon as I can to put away for later. Thread and quilt batting is not a sexy or fun purchase, but I can't complete my favorite crafts without it, so I'm putting it away now for later. A lot of people don't agree with me for doing this, but having my sewing room and plenty of baking supplies is what got me through that nightmare of 2020. That's when I realized how crucial emergency preparedness is to surviving difficult times. And it goes beyond food and water. Mental health matters, too.

@PattymacMakes Жыл бұрын
It's table height so if you have trouble at a regular table, this would be the same thing. You could raise your chair to get an acceptable height ratio. I'm not working for hours and hours on end, and I don't do any FMQ. It sounds like what you are most concerned about is doing FMQ. My sewing and quilting is a lot more casual. I also do a bit of my work standing at my cutting table to switch up where I'm working. It's a good tip, though, I'm not sure how you'd get your sewing machine lower than 30". I would also have difficulty seeing what I'm doing. Getting ergonomics figured out is a whole other video series. But thanks for bringing up another consideration.

Susan, search putting wheels on norden and several things come up. That will answer a lot more questions than I can about that. You might want to consider the Tornviken kitchen Island which I use as my cutting and work table. I also have a sewing machine set up on it right now and I do some sewing standing up though you could get a matching counter chair to give a place to sit. I'm thinking about getting one to add to my setup. I love my kitchen island too and I should do an update on that one as well. I do have a video on my channel about it if you're interested. It's this one if you haven't seen it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZKbdnygbbx_ppI The drawers are about 15" deep and 6" wide so they are big! They did help me load, though I had to ask for the assistance. That's frustrating it's so far away. That definitely turns into an over night trip so you can't exactly just go over and browse. I'm going back to my store soon so I'll be filming other options. I've been wanting to go for a while but I desperately needed a new phone to film on. I'm finally picking that up this week so my ability to get out of the house and film different things is about to drastically improve. If you see things you specifically are curious about, message me and I'll look for it in the showroom.

Well Ikea has made a valiant effort to keep prices down, but when all the government policies are aimed at shutting down industries and eliminating the energy we need to function it makes it very difficult for business to operate. Not to mention the monetary policy which is making a bad situation much worse. This is not price gouging. They are passing along costs to consumers which is how it works. They cannot operate at a loss indefinitely. Unlike the government, they cannot simply print the money to cover themselves. I am speaking of the American government specifically since this is where I live and it's what they are doing. They are making all of this so much worse than it needs to be. It's very scary what's being done, and why I encourage people to have emergency plans in place. Including sewing supplies.

In this economy I don't know where you're going to find something this functional for this price. It would help if you provided solutions if you know of them. People do read comments looking for options, so please share them if you truly know of something. Keep in mind the point is this is a gateleg table with a ton of storage, and used in a sewing room, so offering something comparable is most helpful. I've used my furniture heavily for 2 years now and it's not even showing signs of wear. It's not solid wood so it's not going to last 40 years, but I'm personally ok about that. I'm also not going to last another 40 years. LOL
