Thanks, I bought these seeds here in Melbourne, they call them Yellow Scallop Squash here, but I agree with you, they should be called Flying Saucer Squash! 🛸😁 My little seedlings are just big enough to go out into the garden now, so I Googled to find out if they are climbers, would I need a trellis set up... found your video! Super handy tips on pollination thanks, as while I am new to these squash, I am a zucchini (courgette) and cucumber regular! Thanks for your video, be well and happy gardening! 🌱💚

May I ask if you ended up finding out if they are climbers??
@calmblueocean724310 ай бұрын
@@DreamsOfGardening Hi👋! Sadly, I never found out! My chooks 🐓 got through a weak part of the fence I had around that garden bed and scratched the seedlings out while they were still small, so they perished (the squash plants, not the chooks - they were pretty happy with themselves 🐔!) Good luck with your squash! ✌😀

I thank you for creating this video as it was most helpful. This is my first year growing these and I only have one patty pan developed so far but have had loads of flowers. My first day off I am going to head outside with a paint brush!

As you are pollinating...there is a dark thing below and a little to the left. It looked like a small crab hanging onto the plant...but that would make little sense. So that left me thinking....a HUGE spider?? REALLY hoping it was a dead leaf and my brain just freaked! lol

I looked and looked to see if I could find what you were talking about and I didn’t see it. Definitely could’ve been a spider. Or a fallen blossom. Or a leaf. I don’t bother the spiders as long as they don’t bother me. They eat the bad bugs and are great for the garden. 😊

I have a couple female blooms( lots of male blooms)but the female flowers aren’t opening up like the male flowers that are open wide. I’ve had to remove a couple female flowers that had a small squash on it that was shriveling up. What is going on???? Is it not getting pollinated? The bees are all over the male flowers so I know they are here. So so discouraging!!!!! Also my plant is just compacted with the male stems and the tiny squash that are coming on are really crowded. I don’t have a lot of experience growing this variety so I’m stumped. Should I pull this plant out and hope for better luck on another Patty pan I have growing in another area????? PLEASE RESPOND SOON!!!

It takes a while. I have noticed for females to arrive... with my cantaloupe, it was a whole few months... I have 3 now... pollinated 😅 these also don't get discouraged ❤ it takes a while for the female to pop up. For now you can enjoy those flowers as stuffed and baked ❤❤ also they love having moist soil,. Don't let it dry out it will cause the fruit to get bitter. liquid fertalizer, they are heavy eaters. Throw straw around the base to keep moist. ❤

Soil scientist here. I can see in video you have powdery mildew on your plant. Easy to fix.

I never thought of pollinating. Does is help a lot? Mine grow without pollution.
@southernvagabond48474 жыл бұрын
Shirley Head it really does. I live in north Texas and I find that we don’t have a lot of pollinators that visit our garden so I prefer to hand pollinate for peace of mind that I’ll get the highest yield possible.

Thanks so much for this video! I keep having a problem. I’ve only been getting male flowers and not a single female appearing. Any tips?
@lavenderloco Жыл бұрын
Been hand pollinating them. They dont seem to do anything 😢and the plant is really fruitfull... should the flower fall off itself... or how does that work?

I am just wondering, and I don't really know, that if it were no pollinated, would the smash be seedless? That's good thing, isn't it?
@southernvagabond48473 жыл бұрын
No. If it is not pollinated then the squash will shrivel up and die over the next week once the flower closes.

How many days did it take for first flowers to appear?
@southernvagabond48474 жыл бұрын
naman singhal about a month and a half however the first set of blooms to show up usually don’t appear at the same time as the opposite blooms.

Hi I've got both male and female flowers except the female flowers don't seem to want to blossom any suggestions?
@southernvagabond48473 жыл бұрын
You’ll want to be checking your blossoms early in the morning. Once the heat of the day sets in the blossoms close until the next morning.
@nancymanera44403 жыл бұрын
I've been using a paint brush and even tho the females haven't open i just use the paintbrush put male pollen on it and rub the tip of the female flower so far it seems to be working because my patty pans are growing 😀
@MrRobert1971102 жыл бұрын
If I leave them for two to three days though get bigger than that..

Those ants😮wow mine eats the flowers😢
@davidbanks99792 жыл бұрын
With the ants, is that why you are doing that, because bees will not enter the flour if there ants there, just a fyi 😊
