On this day in 1959 {October 5th} the movie 'Girls' Town' was released across the U.S.A. Paul Anka, who portrayed a character name Jimmy Parlow in the movie, had two songs featured in the film that made Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart... Both songs also made the Top 10; "Lonely Boy" peaked at #1 {for 4 weeks} on July 13th, 1959 and "It's Time To Cry" reached #4 {and both records spent 15 weeks on the Top 100}... Mr. Anka celebrated his 72nd birthday three months ago on July 30th...

Thank you for uploading this. I saw some of it on TV some years ago, have always wanted to see the whole film--now I can, thanks to your generosity. I remember there was a scene of Anka in a car or limousine, and his manager "handling" him as a commodity (as Colonel Parker did with Elvis). But what also struck me was how sophisticated Anka was for such a young guy.

@runrockwater Yes, Paul Anka is an actually a musician! He wrote almost every song he sang, including Frank Sinatra's big hit My Way! Just look him up online, you'll find lots of things about him! =)

This is also a good documentary on what show business life is really like, and a glimpse at the hysteria of fans that would reach its zenith a few years later with this act of four guys from Liverpool, England.

Ah! Reminds me of my days studying film at Queen's. I'm so glad someone put this online...now I'm just gonna go look for the part where the filmmakers make Paul and the owner of the copacabana re-perform the kiss and share awkward conversation. Great doc.

@beatlettese Thank you for pointing this out. But the larger point is that Anka's peak (and vthat of the singular, male teen idols) was in the pre-Beatles era. I was never a huge Beatles fan anyway, only the early years (1962-65). As far as I'm concerned, after "Help!" The Beatles were all over. I much preferred The Rolling Stones, The Animals and The Yardbirds. Even from a pop perspective, to me, Herman's Hermits and The Monkees were much more fun.

What differentiated Anka from the other, Italian teen idols of this era (Fabian, Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon, etc.) was Anka wrote songs, really had show biz in his blood. His talent in this regard led to composing Frank Sinatra's signature tune ("My Way") and the theme song for Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show."

@gymnastix yeah,u wrote right:Anka was in pre-Beatles era.They became famous a bit after.In this case,in fact,the movie is of 1962 and the Beatles were just starting their musical career.So,i assume that they were not yet famous throughout the world,but someone (a girl),probably came from Liverpool or somewhere else where had heard play the Fab 4,was left amazed and fascinated.Even if u r not a Beatles fan,i like your taste in music anyway because it's music of the 60s of which i'm passionate :)

Anka, Bobby Darin & Ricky Nelson were the biggest, genuine, single talents in that era between the '50's rock pioneers & the British Invasion bands. Of course there were also the great girl groups (The Ronettes, The Shirelles & The Shangri-La's) and the surf rock groups (The Beach Boys, The Ventures, Jan & Dean) in this era before The Beatles & Rolling Stones, but I'm talking single artists. Sadly, Darin's heart problems & Nelson's tragic accident curtailed each of their careers prematurely.

If you look again at my comment, there was a comma between "other" and "Italian teen idols," meaning Anka was a teen idol but NOT Italian. Otherwise, I would have written "other Italian teen idols" (no comma).
@Chudyk198616 жыл бұрын
Another thing that differentiated him from other "Italian teen idols" is that he's not Italian at all but of Lebanese decent.

But it IS a fact most of the teen idols of the same era as Anka WERE Italian (had their names Anglicized to not appear "too ethnic"), and also that most were from Philly. Believe it or not, there was a time when many people in America (and even elsewhere in the world outside of Italy) looked disparagingly at "those EYE-TALIANS," persons whose names ended in a vowel.

After ‘The Beatles’ arrived....who’s Paul Anka! 🥴
@gymnastix15 жыл бұрын
But I know Anka's Canadian and of Lebanese descent (there's an 's' in there, although I'm sure Anka'a also a 'decent' guy, as you wrote), one reason fellow Lebanese, Danny Thomas, invited him on his sitcom. Hopefully this will clarify this misunderstanding, and not invite any other misunderstood postings.
