I worked with Mr bowles , he was a very nice to be around ..we had coffee and walnut cookies ..1990 in the casbah Tanger ...

I took a writing class with Bowles in the '80's in Tangier. Morocco is a very interesting country -- a lot like stepping into the past. In Fez where I almost got lost in the Medina until I was rescued by a boy from Casablanca who took me back to the group bus outside the walls. I had spent all my money at that point so it still bothers me that I couldn't give him a gift of money ...

I did as well, at the American University in Tangier. I was there in the summer of '82. It was a memorable trip.

It’s an old tradition in Moroccan sect called issawa عيساوة U can see worst than that in a famous Moroccan festival in the city of meknes named chikh el kamel It’s getting scarce but it’s still there

hafid mostarhfir it has nothing to do with traditions, Issawa are devil worshippers! Everyone in Morocco knows it. thats the only reason why they can do all the crazy harm to their bodies and nothing happens to them!

This kind of music is still performed in Morocco, they cut themselves but the cuts heal after a few minutes, it's very spiritual !!

@@heekyungkim8147 C'est une forme de spiritualité ! Généralement ce type de personne joue avec les musiciens ce scénario pour donner de la crédibilité à leurs shows, pour duper le public... C'est un mélange entre la superstition, la vénération du diable et l'escroquerie. Si tu veux en savoir plus renseigne toi sur la musique de : Gnawa.

I have it on vhs I could make you a copy but I do not have funds to send. The entire doc. is amazing. Paul Bowles is one of the greatest short story writers who have ever lived.

I think he's speaking about being a white man, not his nationality. I can't speak for him but he mentions it in his various writings.

and in Morocco we are not Black...in Chaouen exactly people are more white than white itself...maybe Bowles meant he was the only non muslim

I was the real UNIQUE european living in Chefchauen since December 97 untill August 99. I´ve read the Sheltering Sky way before I went to Morocco. The Sheltering Sky is a state of mind..... o nada ter (para além da aventura) é a maior riqueza possivel!!! Read Albert Cossery please!
