Paul Desmond was an American jazz alto saxophonist and composer, best known for the work he did in the Dave Brubeck Quartet and for composing that group's greatest hit, "Take Five". He was one of the most popular musicians to come out of the West Coast's cool jazz scene. Desmond's style and tone shine with an alluring quality, and the record is filled with melodies that don't fail to stimulate the sophisticated jazz listener.

Paul Desmond said he wanted his sax to sound the way a cold, dry Martini tastes. I think he achieved it.

Desmond has a sound a "dry martini." He truly is the master of the cool West Coast school of jazz. I have many of his records (especially with the ones with Jim Hall) and love every one. I am glad he finally left Brubeck and recorded his own catalogue.

It's nice he was able to expound on his own but he and Brubeck were magical and Dave Brubeck never failed to showcase Mr. Desmond.

@Ewerb7, I'm glad you are fond of Desmond's skills, but I vociferously hope that you do not have the impression that Dave Brubeck was a hinderance to Paul in any way. It is regarded as the opposite, as he composed "Take Five", along with Brubeck, which was obviously his way into recognition. Anyways, I'm glad that I am not the only person enjoying this incredible recording.

Ah ~~ the inimitable Paul Desmond ... Saxophone, a hybrid of brass and woodwind, its 8 types -- from the range of Eb to Bb to the rare if all but obsolete C melody -- may well be the one instrument whose variety best metes-out the many and untold intents shared by the musicians who have played it, and serves as a nigh accurate barometer of the countless experiences that one may have -- from straight musing or academically cold thought to that of fire, joy or sorrow. It is easy enough to approach yet provides infinite possibility; the styles and tones hitherto expressed, nigh infinite. Ironically, it is and was seldom if ever incorporated into European symphonic composition, of which reason I am told is, on one count it tends to ape that of string instruments, in particular the Bb Soprano, which is said seems to mimic the sound of the violin. The others, the Bb Tenor and Eb Alto, is said approximate tones thought peculiar to the trumpet; therewith, the preferred woodwinds used in European symphony typically resolve to those other famed choices, single and double reed, which supposedly bear greater distinctiveness and purity, thus do not foster confusion.

TRAM = Frankie Trumbauer, Check it out ~ "singing the blues" C Melody Sax with Bix on Cornet, I think! This guy, along with Jimmy Dorsey (Alto Sax - Clarinet) motivated Lester Young = Pres who blew his tenor somewhat like a C Melody and was superb on an old marching band metal clarinet which looked something like a straight soprano sax!

For example, there are countless teles in the world but the Form of teleness is at the core; it is the essence of all of them.....this being said, the Telecaster at it's genesis is rather formless and as a nondescript pile of seemingly unrelated parts without any significant apparent function, said collection of parts bares no resemblance to the "form" that is at the core of Teleness. Assembled as a ready to play instrument it takes on a "form" that is the essence of Teleness...Therefore, all tele parts, no matter their origin are just that, a pile of parts, until they become the most advanced, elegant, inspiring musical instrument the modern musical world has seen since the piano was invented.........jabbo fortynine

His sound is really the sound of the mouthpiece chamber in a MC Gregory alto saxophone mouthpiece, It was a smaller chamber and venturi hole, causing a sweetness in the tone....I'm not trying to take anything away from Paul Desmond, but I have the same mouthpiece and it sounds exactly like this.....
